Kimi Antonelli is the 2026 Formula 1 world champion. He sealed it with third place in Mexico City, with four rounds still to run. At 20 he is the youngest champion the sport has had, and the first Italian to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. In the first season under these regulations he has been the most complete driver on the grid, quick over one lap, calm under pressure and reliable at turning poles into wins. Mexico wasn’t his cleanest afternoon, but it didn’t need to be. Mercedes have their champion, and the rest of the grid have to work out how to beat him next year. There’s a lot more to say about how he did it and what it means for 2027, and we’ll go into it in “From Bologna to World Champion”.

Qualifying

Hamilton’s first Grand Prix pole for Ferrari came by nine thousandths, 0.012 per cent of a lap. At a margin that small, the car didn’t decide it. Tyre preparation did. Track temperature fell from about 47 degrees to 38 through the session, so the job changed from keeping tyres from overheating to getting them up to temperature in the first place. Ferrari’s SF 26 is gentle on its tyres over a race, but the same trait makes it slow to warm a set on an out lap. Hamilton handled that by turning the usual out lap round. He pushed on the straights and backed off in the corners, which built heat through the tyre without scrubbing the surface. Leclerc forced it instead, arriving at Turn 1 at over 270 km/h on his preparation lap. He overheated his rears through Turns 9 to 11 and finished third, 0.119 down, despite having topped both Friday sessions. Russell missed pole carrying an extra lap of fuel so he could run a double preparation lap, and that weight probably cost him more than nine thousandths. He was quicker than Hamilton through the slow, twisting middle sector and lost out where straight line speed and deployment decide the lap. That is a fair summary of the two cars here. Verstappen qualified fourth on 1:16.692 despite a lock up at Turn 13. He dropped to fifth on the grid with his one place penalty from Friday. Behind them, a red flag for Alonso compressed Q1, and Norris went quickest in Q2. Piastri was eliminated 13th after running the same set of Softs twice.

Look at the vertical axis first. Seven teams are at exactly 350 km/h at the speed trap, and McLaren are just behind at 349. When the whole grid hits the same number, the aero isn’t setting top speed. The 2026 power units most likely are, as deployment tails off at the end of a long straight. At an altitude where the air is about a fifth thinner, drag matters less to begin with. With straight line speed effectively equal, the average speed axis becomes the ranking, and it rewards the teams that run the most downforce. Ferrari are furthest right at around 199.6 km/h average, Mercedes next at 198.8 and Red Bull at 198.0. That is the same order as pole, the front row and the second row. Compare that with Austin a week earlier. There, Ferrari’s high downforce setup cost them 15 km/h at the trap and probably cost them pole. In Mexico the thin air removed that penalty, and the same approach put Hamilton on pole and Leclerc third. Cadillac went the other way with the lowest drag package on the grid, 352 km/h at the trap, but gave up nearly eight km/h of average speed for two extra km/h at the end of the straight. Aston Martin are on their own in the low efficiency corner again, at 346 km/h and 192.5 average.

The front row was decided by 0.009 seconds. Hamilton took his first pole for Ferrari with a 1:16.514, Russell was on 1:16.523, and Leclerc was third on 1:16.633, all on two lap Softs. The three sector bests went to three different drivers: Hamilton in sector one with 26.852, Russell in sector two with 30.008 and Leclerc in sector three with 19.524. Put together, that is an ideal lap of 1:16.384, 0.130 inside pole, so nobody put the perfect lap together. Down the 1.2 km run to Turn 1 all three lines sit on top of each other at 350 km/h. Russell brakes a fraction later, but Hamilton makes it back through Turns 1 to 3, and that small gain is the sector. The second sector is where Leclerc lost his chance. Out of Turn 11, between roughly 3,000 and 3,350 metres, the white line is close to ten km/h down on the other two all the way up the straight. He reached about 320 km/h at the braking point while Russell was nearer 330. Leclerc made up for some of it in the stadium section. He braked latest into Turn 12 and held a little throttle where the others were fully off it, which is why sector three is his. Still, the 0.119 he lost to Hamilton is almost exactly what he gave away on the exit of Turn 11.

This chart splits each lap by what the driver is doing with his feet, and Verstappen’s lap is built differently from everyone else’s. He spent 7.8% of the lap lifting, which means off the throttle and off the brake. That is more than double either Ferrari: Hamilton was on 3.0% and Leclerc on 2.1%. Verstappen also had the least time on the brakes at 21.2% and the most at full throttle at 36.0%. In 2026, time spent coasting is almost always energy management. It recovers charge and keeps the battery in shape for the straights. Verstappen’s lap looks like it had more of that built in than anyone else’s. The Ferraris did the reverse. Hamilton spent the most time on the brakes at 26.7% with Leclerc next at 25.2%, and both barely coasted. They were carrying speed deep into the braking zones and going straight from brake to throttle, which suits a car the drivers trust on entry. The Mercedes pair are in between, at around 5% lift each. Antonelli’s 37.3% at partial throttle, close to Leclerc’s 37.7%, shows a lap built around rotating the car mid corner rather than an aggressive stop. Without energy figures, the lift numbers should be read as a strong hint rather than proof, but it is a clear split in approach between the teams.

Race Summary and Analysis

Max Verstappen won a chaotic Mexico City Grand Prix from fifth on the grid, but the history was made two places behind him. Kimi Antonelli’s third place made him world champion at 20, the youngest in the sport’s history and the first Italian to take the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. He only needed ninth. A race that had a red flag, a standing restart, two Safety Cars and a pile of post race penalties was still settled by one decision at Turn 4 on the opening lap, and Ferrari will look back at that for a long time.

Hamilton started from his first pole for Ferrari, nine thousandths ahead of Russell, and led into Turn 1. Leclerc came round the outside from third, and the two red cars went into Turn 4 side by side and both ran off. Leclerc cut across the grass and came out in front, and Hamilton rejoined behind Verstappen, who had made a strong start from the third row. Russell’s start went the other way. An energy deployment problem cost him four places before the first braking zone. Leclerc was given five seconds for the Turn 4 incident and accepted he deserved it, but by then the damage to Ferrari’s race was done.

Leclerc led the first 27 laps without ever building enough of a gap to cover the penalty. Verstappen did the opposite of the leading runners. He started on the Medium, pitted on lap 27 alongside Leclerc and went onto a new Soft. Leclerc came out behind him after serving his five seconds, and from then on Verstappen was effectively leading. Antonelli’s long spell at the front from lap 28 was a strategy gamble rather than a real lead. Mercedes left him out on his opening Soft for 43 laps, waiting for a Safety Car. It came one lap after he finally stopped.

That Safety Car was for Valtteri Bottas, whose Cadillac suffered a suspension failure and went hard into the barriers. The repairs needed turned it into a red flag. Bottas was checked at the medical centre and released unhurt. Every car got a free tyre change during the stoppage, almost all onto used Softs, and the race restarted from the grid. Hamilton got past Leclerc at the restart and Antonelli followed him into Turn 1. Hamilton then chased Verstappen for the rest of the race and finished 0.7 seconds behind. With a clean afternoon, Ferrari had the pace to win. Instead they finished second and fourth, and both drivers came away wondering what might have been.

There was plenty happening behind the leaders, and the classification wasn’t final until well after the flag. Russell got ten seconds for tipping Hadjar into a spin at Turn 6 and finished sixth behind Norris. Piastri got the same penalty for his collision with Lindblad at Turn 2, which brought out the second Safety Car and ended Lindblad’s race from seventh. Hulkenberg was penalised for running into the back of Bearman, who retired with damage. Colapinto got ten seconds for ignoring a single yellow, and Gasly’s stop and go for a double yellow became a 30 second penalty after the race. Lawson had been disqualified from qualifying and started from the pit lane, and was classified seventh. Bortoleto was eighth, Hadjar recovered to ninth and Hirakawa took tenth on his debut. Both Aston Martins were out within the first six laps.

Verstappen’s win moves him up to second in the championship, two points ahead of Hamilton, with Russell dropping to fourth. With four rounds left, the fight for the runner up places is wide open, but the title has already gone. Antonelli wasn’t flawless in Mexico. The long first stint backfired, and he lost a place to Hamilton at the restart. That hardly matters given what he has done this season. Ferrari will want to forget Turn 4, Mercedes have their champion, and Verstappen has shown again that he wins races when other people make mistakes.

Race Standings

The red line at the top from lap 1 to lap 27 is Leclerc, not the pole sitter. Hamilton led into Turn 1, but the Ferraris went off side by side at Turn 4 and Leclerc came out in front across the grass, while Hamilton dropped behind Verstappen. Leclerc fell to sixth when he served his five seconds during the stops, and that is where Verstappen effectively took the race. Antonelli’s teal line leading from lap 28 to lap 43 is a pit cycle artefact. He stayed out to see if a Safety Car would come, and it arrived one lap after he finally stopped, when Bottas crashed after a suspension failure. Norris’s climb to second on a long first stint is the same story. Everything changes at lap 44, when the red flag gave every car a free stop and a standing restart. Verstappen led from there to the flag. Hamilton passed Leclerc and finished 0.7 seconds behind Verstappen, and Antonelli also got past Leclerc into Turn 1 to take third and the title. Lindblad’s white line ends at seventh on lap 58 after his collision with Piastri. The lower part of the chart is the on road order, not the final one. After post race penalties to Piastri, Colapinto and Gasly, Lawson is classified seventh from a pit lane start, Bortoleto eighth, Hadjar ninth and Hirakawa tenth on debut.

Tyre Strategy

Pirelli brought the C3, C4 and C5, and nobody ran the Hard. The whole race was fought on Mediums and Softs. Verstappen did it the opposite way round to the rest of the front runners. He started on a new Medium, stopped on lap 27 and switched to a new Soft, and that faster tyre in the middle stint is what kept him ahead once Leclerc’s penalty was served. Both Ferraris made the conventional choice of Soft then Medium. Hamilton’s opening stint is dotted, so he started from pole on a used Soft, and Russell did the same. Antonelli’s row is the gamble. He ran 43 laps on a new C5 Soft, which is a remarkable stint at altitude, waiting for a Safety Car that came one lap too late. The red flag around lap 45 then puts almost every row onto dotted red, meaning used Softs for the final 26 laps. Piastri and Sainz are the only two on new Softs at the restart, and Piastri’s advantage didn’t last beyond his collision with Lindblad. Perez and Hirakawa stopped again under that late Safety Car around lap 59. Lawson’s row is worth a look too. He started from the pit lane on a Medium, stopped on lap 11 and ran a used Soft all the way to the red flag. Seventh is a strong result from there.

Pit Times

Mexico’s short pit lane brings the mean down to 24.41 seconds, more than a second quicker than Austin. Haas are fastest at 22.53, with VCARB at 22.74 and Alpine, Red Bull and Williams all close behind around 23. The bars above the line need reading carefully. These are total pit lane times, so any penalty served in a stop is included. Ferrari’s 25.16 almost certainly includes the five seconds Leclerc served at his lap 27 stop for the Turn 4 incident. Without that, Ferrari’s crew probably did a perfectly normal job. Mercedes at 26.59 are well above the mean for the second race running, and Cadillac are the slowest team at 27.36. Neither will be pleased, although the red flag is likely to have distorted this race’s numbers more than any single slow stop. Every car changed tyres during the stoppage, and those stops took well over 50 seconds. Treat the chart as a guide to which crews were tidy, not a precise ranking. The bar labelled “None” at 23.19 looks like a data mapping gap. The best guess is Hirakawa’s Haas on his debut, since his line on the standings chart is the same colour and he isn’t assigned to a team anywhere else.

The making of a racer

Andrea Kimi Antonelli was born in Bologna on 25 August 2006, and he grew up around racing. His father, Marco, runs the AKM Motorsport team, so the paddock was part of his life long before he could drive in it. He won the Easykart International Grand Final in 2015. Four years later he took six international titles in the OK Junior class, including the WSK Super Master Series. In 2020 he became the youngest senior European karting champion in the OK class, and he defended that title in 2021. By then Mercedes had already signed him to their junior programme, and they had good reason to. When he moved into cars, he kept winning. In 2022 he took the Italian and ADAC Formula 4 titles together, with 22 wins between them. In 2023 he won both the Formula Regional Middle East and Formula Regional European championships. Mercedes skipped him past Formula 3 and put him straight into Formula 2 with Prema for 2024. He finished sixth with two wins, at a level most drivers get two years to learn. That was enough for Toto Wolff. When Lewis Hamilton left for Ferrari, Mercedes gave his seat to an 18-year-old.

A difficult first season

His debut suggested it would all come easily. In the rain at Melbourne he qualified 16th and finished fourth, the second-youngest points scorer in Formula 1 history. In Miami he became the youngest driver to take pole for any F1 session, starting the sprint from the front, and his first podium came in Canada. After that, the European season went badly wrong. He retired at Imola, in Spain and in Austria, where he crashed into Max Verstappen. He finished last in Monaco and picked up penalties at Zandvoort. Through the summer, the most highly rated rookie in years looked like an 18-year-old who had been promoted too soon. Mercedes went as far as refitting their old rear suspension in Hungary, to give him a car he could trust. He recovered late in the year, with third in Las Vegas and second at Interlagos, but finished 15th in Abu Dhabi and seventh in the championship on 150 points. Measured against what had been expected of him, it was a poor first season.

What the bad year taught him

Seen from the engineering side, the suspension change was the most telling moment of 2025. A team doesn’t go backwards on hardware for a driver it has given up on. Mercedes did it because they could see the problem wasn’t his talent. A car with an unpredictable rear was eating into his confidence corner by corner, and he was trying too hard to make up the difference. The lessons he took into 2026 were the ones every young driver has to learn at some point. Some weekends you just bank the points. Being quick over one lap means very little if you don’t reach the end of the race. A driver needs to be able to tell his engineers exactly what the car is doing, rather than trying to drive around it. Antonelli has since said he is grateful for the slump, and the way his second season unfolded suggests he means it.

A fresh start under new rules

The 2026 regulations gave every driver on the grid a blank sheet, and that suited Antonelli more than most. The new power units split their output roughly half and half between the combustion engine and the electrical side. The MGU-K now delivers up to 350 kW, the MGU-H has gone, and active aerodynamics change how a car behaves on the straights. A qualifying lap became an exercise in where to spend a limited amount of energy. The experienced drivers had years of habits to unlearn, while Antonelli had one awkward season behind him and nothing to unlearn. Mercedes gave him the W17, the best package on the grid, and he understood it quickly. Russell won the opening race in Australia. In China, Antonelli beat him to pole, becoming the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history at 19 years, six months and 18 days, and then took his first Grand Prix win.

The most complete driver of 2026

China was the first of five wins in a row. He led the championship after Japan, the youngest driver ever to do so, and went into the summer break 50 points clear. He also showed how he would handle bad days, which every champion has. An engine failure in Barcelona, a late problem that left him without points at Silverstone and an abandoned qualifying lap in Austria could each have shaken a driver who had struggled the year before. None of them did. He won at home at Monza and kept adding wins through the autumn. Austin was a good example of how he went about it: pole after Mercedes changed the setup overnight, then a one-stop strategy the two-stoppers couldn’t match. He has nine wins this season, more than any Italian driver in a single year, beating Alberto Ascari’s six from 1952. Six of them came before his 20th birthday, which is more than any teenager has won in Formula 1.

Champion

He wrapped up the title in Mexico City with four rounds to spare. He needed only ninth place and finished third, at the end of a messy afternoon. His long first stint on Softs didn’t pay off when the Safety Car came a lap after he stopped, but he passed Leclerc at the standing restart and stayed clear of the trouble behind him. At 20 years and 68 days old, he is the youngest world champion Formula 1 has had, and he beat Sebastian Vettel’s record by more than three years. He is Italy’s first champion since Ascari in 1953, and the first Formula 1 champion born in this century. The driver who looked out of his depth in Monaco 17 months earlier is now champion.

The Circuit

Here’s a thing I’ve been waiting all season to write about. For a decade, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez has been the circuit that broke the rulebook, the one weekend where the usual engineering logic stopped applying because the air itself was wrong. In 2026, the altitude penalty is roughly halved, and nobody seems to have noticed.

Round 20 runs from 30 October to 1 November 2026, with the race starting at 2pm local on Sunday the 1st, which happens to fall on the principal Día de Muertos weekend. It’s 4.304 kilometres, 17 corners, 71 laps, and the third-shortest lap of the season behind only Zandvoort and Monaco. There’s a Mexican on the grid again too, with Checo Pérez back in a Cadillac for his home race, which will make the Foro Sol the loudest grandstand in Formula 1 by an even wider margin than usual.

But the altitude is the story, as it always is. At somewhere between 2,240 and 2,285 metres above sea level, this is the highest point of the calendar by a very long way, with around a quarter less oxygen in the air than at sea level. The lack of air density changes both engine and aerodynamic performance, and the thin air transports less energy away from hot systems like the power unit and brakes.

Why 2026 changes Mexico more than any other round

Let’s do the physics properly, because this is the most interesting engineering story of the weekend and it deserves more than a line.

A combustion engine makes power by burning fuel with oxygen. Take a quarter of the oxygen away and the turbocharger has to work dramatically harder to force enough air into the cylinders to maintain the same output. Under the old regulations, where the internal combustion engine provided the overwhelming majority of the car’s power, that was a serious handicap. Mexico was where the power unit struggled, the turbo screamed, and the engine engineers spent the weekend managing a system operating well outside its comfort zone.

Now consider the 2026 power unit. Roughly a 50/50 split between combustion and electrical, with the MGU-K uprated to 350kW.

An electric motor does not care about air density. Not even slightly. The MGU-K produces exactly the same 350kW in Mexico City as it does at Zandvoort, because it isn’t burning anything. So half the car’s power output is entirely immune to the altitude, and only the combustion half takes the hit.

The practical consequence is that Mexico’s power deficit relative to a sea-level circuit is roughly half what it used to be. For a decade the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez has been a power unit’s worst weekend of the year. In 2026, it’s merely an awkward one. That is a genuine and under-reported shift in the character of this race, and I’d expect the straight-line speeds to be closer to the rest of the calendar than they have been in years.

There’s a second, related effect on braking. Mexico has historically been punishing on brakes, because thin air means less aerodynamic drag to help slow the car and less cooling airflow through the ducts. An uprated 350kW MGU-K does considerably more of the deceleration work through regeneration, which takes thermal load off the friction brakes. Mexico’s oldest reliability bogeyman gets quietly easier too.

The bad news is cooling, and it’s worse than ever. The 2026 power unit runs a substantially larger battery and a more powerful MGU-K, both of which reject more heat, into air that carries heat away a quarter less effectively than at sea level. Teams will arrive with their most extreme cooling configurations of the season, bigger even than Singapore or Sepang, and they will pay for it in drag. The teams who built genuine thermal headroom into their 2026 concept get their reward here, and the ones who packaged aggressively will be managing temperatures from lap one.

And then downforce, which cuts the other way. Thin air generates less aerodynamic load for a given wing angle, which is why teams historically run their highest-downforce rear wings here and still end up with the sort of actual downforce you’d see at a medium-downforce circuit. Take that already-reduced figure and apply it to a 2026 car carrying 15 to 30 percent less downforce in the first place, and Mexico City will produce the lowest absolute aerodynamic load of the entire season. The cars are going to be slippery, and the middle sector is where you’ll see it.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 6

The lap opens with the longest run from the grid to the first braking zone anywhere on the calendar, close to 900 metres from the start line to Turn 1. Combine that with thin air, a massive slipstream effect and Straight Mode flattening the wings, and you have the single best overtaking opportunity in Formula 1.

It’s also the reason pole position at Mexico is worth less than almost anywhere else. The tow down that straight is so powerful that the car starting second has a genuine shot at leading into Turn 1, and the opening-lap scramble into the Turn 1, 2, 3 complex is reliably one of the highlights of the season.

Turn 1 is a tight right at the end of all that, feeding immediately into the Turn 2 left and the Turn 3 right. It’s a sequence rather than a corner, and the classic error is the same as at Baku and Sepang: brake heroically late, win Turn 1, then arrive at Turn 2 on the wrong line and lose two places. Wide entry, several possible lines, and a long enough complex that a bad decision has time to unravel.

The 2026 car should make this better still. Thirty kilos lighter shortens the braking distance, 100mm narrower means three abreast is realistic rather than optimistic, and the Overtake Mode boost deployed down the main straight gives the attacker control over timing.

Turns 4, 5 and 6 then take the lap away from the start-finish straight through a sequence of medium-speed corners. Traction matters here, and on a surface that is notoriously low-grip and slow to rubber in, getting the power down cleanly with a 2026 power unit’s torque is a real discipline. Watch the rears in the opening laps of a stint.

Sector 2: Turns 7 to 12

The Esses, and this is where the aerodynamic story plays out.

Turns 7 through 11 form a flowing, medium to high-speed sequence of direction changes that demand aerodynamic load above everything else. In a normal year this is the section where teams’ maximum-downforce wings earn their keep. In 2026, with the lowest absolute downforce of the season, the Esses are going to be genuinely difficult. The cars will be moving around, the drivers will be fighting them, and the gap between the confident and the cautious will be wider here than at any other circuit this year.

That matters for tyres too. A car with less aerodynamic grip slides more for the same speed, and sliding generates surface temperature. Mexico has historically been a low-degradation circuit with a smooth surface and modest tyre loads, which is why it ran as a comfortable one-stop for years. The combination of a mandatory two-stop and a car that works its tyres harder through the Esses makes that assumption worth questioning. The teams who read Friday’s long runs correctly will be the ones who know whether the mandated two stops are a constraint or an opportunity.

Turn 12 is the fast right that closes the sector and launches the cars onto the back straight, which is the second Straight Mode zone and the second real overtaking opportunity. Exit speed from Turn 12 is worth a great deal, and on a short lap where every tenth repeats 71 times, it’s a corner the engineers will spend Friday optimising.

The altitude has a driver-side consequence worth noting here as well. A quarter less oxygen makes for an exhausting 71 laps, and Mexico City is physically among the hardest races of the year for reasons that have nothing to do with heat. By the closing stint, the mistakes start appearing in the Esses, where concentration costs most.

Sector 3: Turns 13 to 17

Into the slow stuff, and then into the best atmosphere in motorsport.

Turns 13, 14 and 15 are a tight, slow, technical sequence at the end of the back straight, with the heavy braking zone at the entry providing the third genuine passing opportunity of the lap. It’s a proper stop, and the brake management question comes back here: less air for the ducts, less drag to help, and a car doing it 71 times.

Then the stadium. The circuit threads through the old baseball ground, the Estadio GNP Seguros, where tens of thousands of people are packed around the slowest section of the lap. Turn 16 is a tight right inside the stadium and the cars wind through at walking pace by Formula 1 standards, which means the crowd sees them for longer than anywhere else on the calendar and makes a noise accordingly. If you’ve never watched onboard footage from in there, it’s worth your time.

Out of the stadium and onto the Peraltada, or what remains of it. The original banked final corner was one of the great corners in the sport before safety considerations sent the circuit through the stadium instead, and the surviving section still carries the cars onto the main straight with real speed. Exit speed from the final corner, onto the longest run to the first braking zone on the calendar, is the most valuable half-second of the entire lap. Get it right and you’re attacking into Turn 1. Get it wrong and you’re defending for 900 metres with a car in your gearbox and a full tow behind you.

What decides Sunday

Cooling, first. This is the hardest heat rejection weekend of the season by some margin, made harder by a power unit that generates more heat than its predecessor into air that removes a quarter less of it. The teams with headroom will look untroubled. The teams without will be derating.

The run to Turn 1, second. Nine hundred metres of slipstream with Straight Mode and Overtake Mode available is the best overtaking set-up in Formula 1, and it happens 71 times. Track position is worth less here than almost anywhere, which should produce a properly entertaining race.

Aerodynamic performance through the Esses, third, because the lowest downforce of the season in the one sector that genuinely needs it is where the lap time lives.

And the altitude’s reduced bite, which is the thing I’d watch most closely of all. If the 2026 power unit really does halve Mexico’s traditional power penalty, the running order here may look considerably more like a normal weekend than the form book suggests, and the teams who built their expectations on historical Mexico data will be the ones caught out.

The race lap record stands at 1:17.774 from 2021, and that is safe. Everything else about this weekend is up for grabs. Thin air, maximum cooling, a home hero back on the grid, and a lap that ends inside a baseball stadium on the Day of the Dead. There are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Qualifying

Antonelli’s pole was a 1:34.035, set on his first Q3 run, and the 0.179 seconds he had over Verstappen doesn’t tell you how good it was. Build Red Bull a composite lap from their best sectors across both cars and both runs, deleted laps included, and you get 25.245 from Verstappen in sector one, 37.346 from Hadjar in sector two and 31.485 from Verstappen in sector three. That comes to 1:34.076. Antonelli was 0.041 quicker than a Red Bull that never existed, on one set of tyres at the first attempt. His splits were unusually even for COTA, where sector one normally settles pole. He lost 0.065 to Verstappen through the opening sector and took back 0.049 in the middle and 0.057 in the last. That points straight at the overnight work. Andrew Shovlin talked of “reasonably large changes overnight” and said “almost all our deficit to our competitors” had come “through the sequence from Turns 12 to 15”. Verstappen had been up on Antonelli through there in every session up to Q2. In Q3 Antonelli was two tenths up through the same corners. A driver doesn’t find a swing like that between FP3 and Q3 on his own. That is a setup change paying off.

The downforce map explains Saturday better than the timing screen does. Mercedes sit alone at the edge of the high efficiency corner, at about 208 km/h average and 341 km/h at the trap, which is the best mix of cornering and straight line speed on the grid. Red Bull are just behind at 339 km/h with almost the same average, and that fits Verstappen and Hadjar taking second and third. Ferrari are the outliers. Their average speed is right up with the front two, but their trap speed is 326 km/h, fifteen down on Mercedes and the lowest of any front running team. That is a deliberate high downforce package, loaded up for the esses and the long sweepers and paying for it on the back straight. It was good enough to top all three practice sessions. Over one qualifying lap, with more than a kilometre flat out down to Turn 12, it left Leclerc fourth and Hamilton fifth. Alpine went to the other extreme with the fastest trap of the session at 344 km/h, and Aston Martin are once again alone in the low efficiency corner.

The lap compare shows where that trade off cost time. From roughly 2,800 to 3,600 metres on the back straight, Antonelli and Verstappen run side by side at about 340 km/h. Leclerc’s red line flattens out near 329 and is down to about 315 by the Turn 12 braking zone, and that is where Ferrari’s pole went. Verstappen’s sector one gain shows between 1,000 and 1,500 metres. The blue line carries a few km/h more through the esses, and his throttle trace is sharper through the direction changes. That is a driver who trusts the car in fast corners. Antonelli fought back through Turns 7 to 9, gaining almost two tenths and reportedly holding a lower gear than Verstappen. This is where the 2026 energy problem bites hardest. With power split roughly half and half and the MGU K giving up to 350 kW, you either spend deployment for exit speed out of the esses or save it for terminal speed at Turn 12. You can’t do both on one lap. No energy data has been published, so treat that reading as provisional until telemetry confirms it.

If anyone lost this session, it was Ferrari. Leclerc topped Q2 on 1:34.198 and had been quickest in FP1 and FP2. In Q3 he went 0.069 slower than that, finishing fourth on 1:34.267, 0.017 behind Hadjar. Repeating his Q2 time would have put him second. Hamilton, quickest in FP3, rescued fifth on 1:34.311 on his final run, and the top five were covered by 0.276 seconds. The split inside Red Bull is worth a look too. Hadjar had called it “a disaster of a weekend” after finishing 14th in FP1. He then qualified 0.036 behind Verstappen, with a middle sector nearly a tenth quicker. Verstappen said he “couldn’t lean on the rear the way I wanted in the final sector”. The two cars were the same spec, but the drivers had very different confidence in the rear. On a surface as rough as Austin’s, that points to ride and platform control before aero.

McLaren were never in the fight for the front row, and deleted laps were part of the reason. Piastri took seventh on 1:34.803. Norris was eighth on 1:35.049 after losing a 1:34.379 at Turn 19 that would have put him sixth. Verstappen’s final 1:34.482 and Hadjar’s 1:34.363 were deleted at the same corner, though neither changed the order. Bearman lost a 1:35.592 at Turn 11 in Q2. Across the two practice sessions on Friday, 207 laps were deleted. Lawson set no time in Q3 but moved up to ninth on the grid when Lindblad’s five place power unit penalty dropped him from ninth to 14th. Conditions were dry all session, with about 30 degrees in the air and 35 on the track.

Race Summary and Analysis

Kimi Antonelli did not win the championship in Austin, but he did the next best thing. A ninth victory of the season, converted from his seventh pole and built on a one stop strategy his rivals would not commit to, leaves him 123 points clear with five rounds and 125 points remaining. He arrives in Mexico City needing only to avoid being outscored by 23 points or more. Behind him, the real story of the afternoon was the fight for second in the championship, which is now covered by nine points across four drivers.

The race was effectively shaped on the run up the hill to Turn 1. Antonelli led cleanly from pole; Verstappen, alongside him, made a poor getaway and lost the chance to attack before the first braking zone. Hadjar went backwards too, from third to fifth on lap one with inconsistent clutch delivery, and Russell picked up a five second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage at Turn 12 on the opening lap, mitigated from the standard ten because it was a first lap incident. Red Bull’s launch deficit is now a recurring theme; Laurent Mekies has said the fix requires hardware not available until 2027.

The decisive call was strategic. COTA’s high speed opening sector loads the front tyres heavily, the traction zones later in the lap punish the rears, and the ageing, bumpy surface adds wear on top. Most of the front runners read that as a two stop race. Mercedes backed Antonelli to stretch a long Medium stint and then run the C2 Hard to the flag, and he managed it without visible fuss. That is a harder thing to do than it looks: the opening stint demands discipline with a car that is capable of going faster, and every lap of restraint has to be weighed against an undercut from cars stopping earlier. Nobody could make the extra stop pay back, and Antonelli finished 13.078 seconds clear despite a late virtual safety car for Bottas’s stricken Cadillac.

Behind him, Ferrari had the quickest race car on the day and the wrong grid slot to prove it. Leclerc set the fastest lap, a 1:37.976 on lap 42 on fresher rubber, and passed Verstappen late on for second, his second runner up finish in succession. Hamilton came home fourth, just 1.030 seconds behind the Red Bull, having set the third fastest lap of the race. After sweeping all three practice sessions, Ferrari will feel qualifying fourth and fifth cost them a genuine shot at the win. Verstappen salvaged third through a race of minor technical irritations, and Hadjar recovered to sixth.

McLaren’s afternoon was the opposite of Mercedes’. Norris ran in podium contention before his tyres went away and finished fifth, 30 seconds down; Piastri was seventh. Red Bull and McLaren now sit level on 355 points in the constructors’ championship. Russell’s day was worse still: sixth on the grid, the time penalty, and eighth at the flag, a full 54 seconds behind the team mate he is nominally chasing for the title. The most impressive drive further back belonged to Bortoleto. Starting 21st after 80 places’ worth of power unit penalties across two stewards’ documents, he finished 13th and set the second fastest lap of the race, quicker than Hamilton, Antonelli and Verstappen.

Which leaves a championship decided at the top and wide open beneath it. Russell holds second on 242, one point ahead of Hamilton on 241, with Verstappen on 236 and Leclerc on 233. On current form, Russell is the weakest of the four, and the Mercedes number two seat may yet finish the year fourth or fifth in the standings. Antonelli’s job in Mexico is simply to finish where he has finished almost all season. The interesting racing will be behind him.

Race Standings

Antonelli’s teal line sits at the top from lights out to lap 24 and from lap 32 to the flag. The gap in between is the pit cycle, not a pass. He stopped on lap 24, and Verstappen, who had stopped earlier, inherited the lead until his own second stop came due. Read the middle of the chart with that in mind: almost every crossing between laps 13 and 32 comes from stop timing rather than overtaking. Norris’s orange line is the clearest example. It climbs to second around lap 37 and stays there until 46 purely because McLaren one stopped while the Ferraris and Verstappen were still due their second stops. Once those stops cycled through, he dropped to fourth, then fifth by lap 51 as his Hard tyres faded. The one genuine fight is near the top late on. Verstappen briefly took second around lap 47 before Leclerc passed him for good a couple of laps later. Hamilton dropped to sixth over his second stop around lap 40 and recovered to fourth. Russell’s line falls to tenth at his lap 22 stop and only gets back to eighth. Bearman (lap 24), Colapinto (35) and Bottas (48, which triggered the VSC) are the terminations.

Tyre Strategy

The winning plan is the simplest one on the board: a new Medium to lap 24, then a new Hard for 32 laps to the flag. Russell, Norris and Piastri ran the same Medium to Hard shape but stopped earlier, between laps 15 and 22. The longer first stint is where Antonelli’s advantage came from. Running deeper on the Medium meant a shorter, fresher Hard stint at the end and no undercut threat that he couldn’t cover. The two stoppers all opened on Softs. Leclerc ran Soft, Medium, Hard with stops on laps 15 and 39. Verstappen ran Soft, Soft, Medium and was the only front runner to finish on Mediums. Hamilton’s row is the interesting one: his opening Soft is dotted, so a used set, stopped on lap 14, then Medium and Hard. Starting on scrubbed rubber suggests Ferrari spent their new Softs in qualifying and accepted a shorter, compromised opening stint. With an 18 second pit loss, the extra stop came within 13 seconds of paying off for Leclerc. Further back, the midfield nearly all went Soft to Hard. Bortoleto’s late Soft splash from lap 50 is where he set the second fastest lap of the race.

Pit Times

The mean is 25.61 seconds, and the field splits in two around it. Six teams sit inside 24.7 seconds and five are well above. Audi are quickest at 23.98, with Ferrari 24.16 and VCARB 24.17. Ferrari’s number matters most here, because both their drivers stopped twice. Clean, sub mean stops twice per car are a large part of why Leclerc and Hamilton could make the extra visit work and finish second and fourth. Mercedes look out of place in ninth at 26.74, over a second above the mean, but it cost them almost nothing. Antonelli and Russell stopped once each, so the whole penalty was roughly a second against a 13 second winning margin. A one stop strategy forgives a slow crew in a way a two stop never does. Red Bull at 24.50 and McLaren at 24.61 were solid and unremarkable. Haas at 27.96 and Aston Martin at 28.29 are the outliers. Both reflect messy afternoons: Bearman retired after three stints and Stroll ran a three stop recovery. Neither number says much about how fast their crews actually are.

Reaction Times

These include a constant delay, so read the relative spread. The figure that matters is Verstappen’s: 3.1 seconds to 100 km/h from second on the grid, against Antonelli’s 2.8 from pole. That three tenth gap is the poor getaway everyone saw, and it ended any real chance of attacking into Turn 1. Antonelli’s launch was joint best on the grid alongside Piastri. A pole sitter making the best start in the field is about as clean as a race opening gets. Hadjar’s 3.3 from third explains why he dropped to fifth on lap one, which makes two poor launches from two Red Bulls in the same race. The second phase is less damning for Red Bull. Both cars posted 2.2 between 100 and 200 km/h, level with the leader, so the problem is the clutch and initial traction, not the power delivery further up. Hamilton got off the line well at 2.9 but had the slowest 100 to 200 phase among the front runners at 2.4. Hulkenberg was the clear worst at 4.0 to 100, more than a second behind Antonelli, and from eleventh on the grid that is a race lost in the first two hundred metres.

The Circuit

Hermann Tilke built a lot of circuits that nobody much cares for. Then in 2012 he built this one, borrowed the best corners in the world, stitched them together over a Texan hillside and produced something genuinely excellent. The Circuit of the Americas is 5.513 kilometres, twenty turns, run anti-clockwise over 56 laps, and it remains the most complete test of a Formula 1 car anywhere outside Europe.

Round 19 of the 2026 championship takes place from 23 to 25 October, with the Grand Prix starting at 15:00 local time on Sunday the 25th. And there’s a format note worth having: 2026 drops the sprint and reverts to the traditional structure, the first non-sprint weekend at COTA since 2022, with the sprint slots going to Shanghai, Miami, Montreal, Silverstone, Zandvoort and Singapore instead.

After the single-practice scramble we’ve had at Zandvoort and Singapore, three proper practice sessions at a circuit this demanding is a gift. The teams will use every minute of it, because COTA presents a set-up problem that the 2026 regulations have made considerably more interesting.

The compromise, and the bumps

Two things define an engineering weekend in Austin.

The first is the same conflict that has always existed here, and which the sector layout imposes brutally. Sector 1 is a high-speed, high-load flowing sequence that demands downforce. Sector 2 contains a 1.2-kilometre back straight that punishes drag. Sector 3 is a slow, technical grind that wants mechanical grip. You cannot optimise for all three, and historically teams have split the difference and been quietly unhappy about it.

Active aero softens that, exactly as it does at Baku. Run a higher base downforce level for the Esses and the Turn 16 to 18 sweep, then flatten the wings in Straight Mode for the back straight. You get closer to having both than at any point in the circuit’s history. The teams whose active aero system delivers the biggest delta between the two modes will look strong here, and the ones who trimmed their concept towards low drag will find Sector 1 a long, uncomfortable place.

The second thing is the surface, and it’s the oldest argument in Austin. COTA sits on ground that subsides, and the bumps have been a running sore since 2019. The circuit has been resurfaced in stages more than once, with major work covering Turns 2 to 10 and 12 to 16, concrete pads laid at Turns 2 and 10, and a further phase completed in September 2024 covering the full 20-turn course. Max Verstappen once described the bumps as making the place better suited to a rally car, and Lewis Hamilton publicly offered the GPDA’s help in working out which sections genuinely needed doing.

Here’s why that matters more in 2026 than it did in 2024. Ground-effect cars needed to run low and stiff to work their floors, which is precisely the worst possible set-up for a bumpy circuit. The 2026 cars carry substantially less aerodynamic load and are correspondingly less sensitive to ride height, which means teams can run them higher and softer without destroying the platform. Austin should suit this generation of car better than the last. That’s a quiet, unglamorous consequence of the new rules and I think it’ll show up in the lap times on Friday.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 6

You arrive at Turn 1 having climbed roughly 40 metres from the start-finish line, on a gradient steep enough that the apex is completely blind from the approach. It’s the most famous corner on the circuit and deservedly so: heavy braking from around 320kph down to second gear, uphill, into a left-hander you cannot see, with the track falling away sharply on the other side.

It’s the primary overtaking zone and the scene of most of COTA’s opening-lap chaos, because the entry is enormously wide and three cars will routinely arrive abreast. The 2026 car helps here in the usual ways. Thirty kilos lighter means shorter braking distances, 100mm narrower means genuinely three-wide rather than heroically so, and the Overtake Mode boost deployed on the climb gives the attacker control over the timing in a way DRS never did.

The classic error is the same as at Baku’s Turn 1 and Sepang’s: win the corner, lose the exit. Turn 1 drops steeply away on the other side and immediately feeds into the Esses, so a driver who throws it in from a mile back and misses the apex has nothing on the run down to Turn 2.

And then the Esses, Turns 2 through 9, which is the best part of the circuit and the part the drivers talk about. It’s a high-speed, flowing, downhill left-right-left-right sequence openly modelled on Maggotts and Becketts, and the comparison is fair. The drivers describe genuinely feeling the downforce through here, which tells you everything about the loads involved.

This is where the 2026 regulations will be most visible. Take 15 to 30 percent of the downforce away from a sequence whose entire character depends on aerodynamic load, and the Esses become a real question again rather than a demonstration of grip. Expect a wider spread between the committed and the cautious than we’ve seen here in years, and expect the drivers to enjoy it enormously.

The tyre story starts here too, and it’s front-axle led. Rapid direction changes at high lateral load, repeated eight times in a few seconds, work the front tyres hard thermally. Because the circuit runs anti-clockwise, it’s the right-hand side of the car taking the heavier load across much of the lap, which is the reverse of what most of the calendar demands and which changes how the compounds behave across a stint.

Sector 2: Turns 7 to 12

Out of the Esses, the track opens into Turn 10, a slow left where the circuit had a concrete pad laid beneath it to combat the subsidence, and then Turn 11, a tight left-hand hairpin at the end of a short straight.

Turn 11 is the setup corner for the most important piece of road in Austin. The 1.2-kilometre back straight that follows is the longest full-throttle run of the lap and the second genuine overtaking zone, and it will certainly carry a Straight Mode activation.

This is also the circuit’s one real clipping risk. Twelve hundred metres is a long time to sustain full deployment, and while COTA harvests reasonably well thanks to the heavy stops at Turns 1, 11, 12 and 20, a team who models the back straight badly will find the trace going flat with three hundred metres to run. That’s precisely where every overtake in the race gets decided, and it’s the difference between making a pass and being passed back.

Note the exit of Turn 11 in particular. A clean, patient exit from that hairpin is worth more at COTA than almost anything else on the lap, because everything it buys you compounds across 1.2 kilometres. Drivers will be giving up entry speed to get the traction right, and the ones who get it wrong will spend the straight watching mirrors.

Turn 12 is the heavy stop at the end of it, a left-hander approached at over 320kph and braked down to around 100. Wide entry, several available lines, and the best genuine passing corner on the circuit after Turn 1. Get a tow down the back straight, deploy the boost, and you can have a proper go here.

Sector 3: Turns 13 to 20

The final sector opens with the most underrated corner sequence on the circuit.

Turns 13, 14 and 15 are the slow technical complex that follows, where traction and mechanical grip matter and aerodynamics do very little. This is the section that punishes a car set up purely for the Esses, and it’s where the 2026 power unit’s torque delivery out of slow corners will test the rear tyres on a warm Texan afternoon.

Track familiarity is high, incidentally. COTA has been on the calendar since 2012, the layout borrows from circuits the drivers know intimately, and the race is staying put after city leaders confirmed in October 2025 that it will remain at COTA through 2034. Nobody is learning this place in 2026. They’re learning what the new car does to it.

Turns 16, 17 and 18 form a long, multi-apex left-hander lifted in spirit from Istanbul’s Turn 8, and it is thermally the most punishing part of the lap. The car is held at high slip angle through a sustained, extended corner, loading the right-hand tyres continuously for several seconds with no chance to cool. On an anti-clockwise circuit this is the section that destroys a right-front.

Across a stint, Turn 16 to 18 is the degradation story of the race. A driver who leans on the car here early in a stint will be sliding by the end of it, and on a circuit where the pit loss is modest and a mandatory two-stop is in play, that drop-off translates directly into strategy. Consistency over a long stint and minimising tyre drop-off is what separates the teams who look after this sector from the ones who attack it.

The 2026 downforce cut cuts both ways here. Lower peak cornering load should ease the thermal punishment slightly. But a car with less aerodynamic grip is also a car working harder for the same speed, sliding more and generating more surface temperature, and I suspect the second effect outweighs the first. Watch the long-run data on Friday afternoon carefully. It’ll tell you who’s winning on Sunday.

Turn 19 and Turn 20 close the lap, a pair of lefts that funnel you back onto the pit straight. Same rule as everywhere else: the exit of the last corner determines whether you’re a threat into Turn 1 or a target. On a circuit with two strong overtaking zones, a scrappy exit from Turn 20 on tired tyres is an invitation.

What decides Sunday

Tyre management through the final sector, first. The sustained load of Turns 16 to 18 on an anti-clockwise layout in October heat is the single biggest determinant of race pace, and the mandatory two-stop means managing degradation across three stints rather than nursing one set to the flag.

The back straight energy model, second. Twelve hundred metres is the longest sustained deployment of the weekend and the place every overtake happens. Get it right and your passes look inevitable. Get it wrong and you’ll be quick for a kilometre and embarrassed for the last two hundred metres.

And the Esses, third, because that’s where qualifying is won and where the 2026 regulations have the most to say. A circuit sector built entirely around aerodynamic load, driven by cars with meaningfully less of it, is going to look different to anything Austin has seen.

Leclerc’s 1:36.169 from 2019 stands as the race lap record and it isn’t falling this year. But a COTA where the surface finally suits the cars, where active aero softens the oldest set-up compromise on the circuit, and where Maggotts-in-Texas becomes a genuine test of nerve again is a very good weekend to be watching. Three practice sessions, no sprint, and a proper circuit. We’ve not had many of those lately.

Sprint Qualifying and Race

Verstappen took sprint pole with a 1:31.156, 0.120 seconds clear of Russell and 0.243 ahead of Leclerc, and the sector split is now a pattern rather than a coincidence. Verstappen owns sectors one and three at 26.832 and 25.675, while Leclerc takes the middle at 38.445, a full two tenths better than Verstappen managed there. That is the third session in a row, across Sepang and both Singapore qualifyings, where a Ferrari has been quickest through the twisty middle section and a Red Bull has won on the exits and the straights either side. The ideal lap from the three sector bests is a 1:30.952, two tenths inside pole. Russell’s lap deserves more credit than second place suggests. He was running the older spec Mercedes, which Antonelli’s struggles on the new package rather vindicated, and he set his time on a Soft with five laps on it against Verstappen’s two. The trace shows how he made it work: the teal line consistently holds speed deeper into the braking zones, around 2,550 and 4,200 metres, before giving it back on exit. Late braking on older rubber is a brave way to find a tenth. Sainz started last after a race control error left several cars down on power at the end of SQ1.

The sprint was delayed and shortened before it started. Heavy rain left standing water across the circuit, the stretch between Turns 2 and 3 being the specific aquaplaning and visibility concern, and race control sent the medical car out to assess before moving the formation lap from 17:00 to 17:30 local and cutting the distance from 21 laps to 20. The field then ran two formation laps rather than one. Verstappen started from sprint pole on a 1:31.156, with Russell alongside on a 1:31.276 and Leclerc third. Sainz, eliminated 22nd in SQ1, started from the pit lane after parc ferme modifications. Qualifying slipped from 21:00 to 21:30 as a consequence of the delay, which is how a wet Saturday afternoon ends up compressing a dry Saturday night.

Russell took the lead from Verstappen into the first corner and then lost it, and everything else, by spinning into the wall on the pit straight at the end of the opening lap on a damp surface. That set the tone. Perez and Stroll collided at Turn 16, the stewards finding that Perez had initiated the overtaking attempt legitimately and then locked the front right, a five second penalty being deemed appropriate but not applied because he was unclassified. Hadjar retired with a power loss, Colapinto with a car communications problem. A safety car period ended on lap 6 and the restart immediately produced two more rear end contacts, Bottas into Albon and Albon into Bortoleto, with the stewards issuing near identical statements and no penalties because both cars retired. Lindblad spun after Turn 5, drove roughly 100 metres the wrong way to turn around, and was judged not to have created an unsafe situation given the lack of oncoming traffic.

Verstappen won by 2.591s from Hamilton, with Leclerc third at 16.871s and Antonelli fourth at 17.238s. Lawson took fifth, Bearman sixth from thirteenth on the grid, Hulkenberg seventh. The final lap belonged to McLaren, and not in a good way. Norris went down the inside of Piastri at Turn 5 for fourth place, the pair touched at the apex, and both spun. Piastri stopped there and was classified fourteenth, a lap down, having completed more than ninety per cent of the distance. Norris recovered to eighth and one point, out of nine that were on the table. Eight cars went unclassified altogether, which on a twenty lap sprint at a street circuit in those conditions is roughly what the format invites.

Qualifying

Marina Bay in a 2026 car is an energy problem dressed up as a traction problem. The lap has nineteen corners, almost no sustained full throttle, and a 50/50 split between combustion and electrical power that has to be rebuilt in the few braking events long enough to harvest anything worth having. The MGU K will give you 350 kW if you ask for it, but asking for it everywhere means arriving at the last sector with nothing left, and the last sector is where the lap is won. Add the active aero picture, where Straight Mode is only worth having on the handful of runs long enough to pay back the flap cycle, and qualifying becomes an exercise in deciding which three or four places on the lap you are prepared to be slow.

Ferrari had the quicker car over a theoretical lap and did not assemble one. Hamilton’s best sectors added to 1:31.347, twenty six thousandths faster than the lap that took pole, and he never put them together. His recorded Sector 1 was 27.124 and his Sector 2 38.258, the latter the benchmark of the session. On his second Q3 attempt he lost 0.157s in Sector 2 and 0.144s in Sector 3 against his own bests, and finished third on 1:31.496. Leclerc’s 1:31.427 was the better executed of the two Ferraris, giving away only 0.023s in Sector 1 against his own best but 0.161s in Sector 3, which accounts for most of his 0.054s deficit to pole. Ferrari’s weakness at Marina Bay was the final sector, and Verstappen’s strength was the final sector. That is the whole story of the session in one sentence.

Verstappen took pole with a 1:31.373, 0.054 seconds clear of Leclerc and 0.123 ahead of Hamilton, all on two lap Softs, and he did it with his opening Q3 lap. The sector story mirrors Sepang almost exactly. Hamilton was quickest in the middle sector at 38.258, which works out at 0.273 seconds better than Verstappen managed there, yet he still lost by over a tenth, meaning the Red Bull took nearly four tenths out of him across sectors one and three combined. The ideal lap from the three sector bests is a 1:31.100, a quarter of a second inside pole, so there was time on the table for whoever stitched it together. The speed trace shows where Verstappen banked it. On the run out of Turn 13 towards the start of the final sector, around 3,400 metres, the blue line reaches roughly 291 km/h against about 284 for both Ferraris, seven km/h on exit that pays all the way down the straight. Through the slower stuff the Ferraris are tidier, Leclerc’s minimum through the Turn 16 and 17 complex sitting around 103 km/h against 110 for Verstappen, which tells you the Red Bull was trading entry speed for a better exit. Hamilton had been quickest in both Q1 and Q2; the Q3 improvement simply never came.

The first thing to notice is how compressed the vertical axis is. The entire grid sits between 302 and 309 km/h at the trap, a seven km/h spread, because nobody arrives at Marina Bay with anything other than maximum downforce. The differentiation is almost entirely horizontal, in average speed, which is exactly where a 19 corner street lap should be won. Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes form the leading group on the right of the map, with Ferrari the furthest out at roughly 193 km/h. That deserves a caveat: Ferrari plot ahead of Red Bull on average speed despite Verstappen setting the faster lap, so the average speed axis here is best read as a relative indicator of cornering performance rather than a direct proxy for lap time. Even so, it confirms what the result says, that the Ferrari was genuinely competitive through the corners and that pole was decided by fine margins rather than a package advantage. Mercedes sit a step behind both at around 191 km/h and 307, which fits a weekend where Antonelli was openly struggling with the team’s new upgrade. At the other end, Aston Martin are isolated in the low efficiency corner, 302 km/h and barely 182 average, and both cars went out in Q1.

Race Summary and Analysis

Verstappen led into Turn 1 and led out of lap 62. Leclerc got the better launch of the front row and drew almost alongside on the run to the first corner, but Marina Bay’s Turn 1 does not reward the car on the outside and Verstappen had the line. Behind them Hamilton held third from Antonelli, Norris and Piastri in grid order, and Lawson picked up a place to seventh on softs. Russell, starting nineteenth, was seventeenth by the end of the lap. There was no first lap incident, which on this circuit in these cars counts as a result in itself.

The opening stint was a procession interrupted by a failure. Russell worked through the back of the midfield at roughly a place every two laps, taking Bortoleto on lap 3, Albon on lap 5, Colapinto on lap 6 and Lindblad on lap 8, while Bearman cleared Ocon on lap 3 and Sainz on lap 5. On lap 8 Bortoleto’s Audi stopped near the pit exit with a suspected gearbox failure and the first virtual safety car was deployed, with the pit lane briefly closed while the car was recovered. Racing resumed on lap 9 with the front order unchanged. Nobody at the front could use the neutralisation because the pit lane closure removed the option, which is the first point at which the race’s strategic shape was set by the marshals rather than the engineers. The car subsequently caught fire after being pushed back, which Dave McNish confirmed.

Hamilton moved first among the leaders. He had started on a new medium with a one stop in mind and took softs on lap 18, rejoining seventh and being back up to sixth by lap 20. Antonelli followed on lap 23, softs to mediums, and came out sixth. Leclerc stopped on lap 24 onto mediums and emerged fourth. The midfield cycled through between laps 26 and 31: Lindblad and Stroll on 26, Ocon and Bottas on 28, Gasly on 29, Hulkenberg on 30, Lawson and Sainz on 31, all onto softs. By lap 31 Verstappen led Norris by 19.3 seconds, with Piastri, Leclerc, Hamilton and Antonelli strung out behind on three different tyre ages. Colapinto stopped near Turn 8 on the same lap with a suspected driveline failure. Yellow flags were shown and no virtual safety car was called, which was the correct read of where the car came to rest and also a piece of luck for everyone who had already stopped.

Verstappen and Norris both pitted on lap 32, softs to mediums, Verstappen retaining the lead comfortably. Piastri, Bearman and Hadjar went a lap later. Antonelli collected a black and white flag for track limits on lap 35. Then on lap 39 Stroll parked on the Turn 15 escape road with an overheated clutch after 36 laps and the second virtual safety car arrived, and with it the only genuine strategic decision of the afternoon. Leclerc and Antonelli both took it, swapping mediums for fresh softs at a fraction of the usual cost. Russell made his single stop on the same lap and entered the pit lane as the neutralisation ended, so paid close to full price for it and rejoined tenth. Ferrari called Hamilton in to double stack behind Leclerc. He declined, stayed out, and inherited second place on softs that were by then twenty one laps old.

That was the race. Piastri took a second stop on lap 41 for softs, forced rather than chosen, because he had picked up a slow puncture. Leclerc set the fastest lap of the race on the same lap, a 1:35.202, which is 3.829s off his qualifying time and tells you how much the C5 was still giving at twenty laps old when it was fresh. He had Hamilton’s gap down to 0.412s by lap 45 and was past him on lap 46. Antonelli, reporting braking difficulty that Mercedes attributed to heat soak, came through on lap 54 when Hamilton and Norris both ran off at Turn 1 while fighting each other, the stewards taking no action on the basis that Norris had left the track at the same point and the pair rejoined in the correct order. Norris got by Hamilton on lap 55, Hadjar took Gasly for tenth on lap 58, and Piastri completed the dismantling on lap 61. Verstappen’s final margin was 7.335s over Leclerc and 24.573s over Antonelli, and he had run the entire distance with a dead radio.

For the championship, Singapore did very little to change the shape of the season, and that alone favours the leader. Antonelli’s third place takes him to 340 points, 102 clear of Russell with six rounds and 150 points remaining, so it is not yet mathematically over, but Russell now needs Antonelli to have two genuinely bad weekends. The real movement is behind them. Verstappen has climbed to fourth on 221 points, eight behind Hamilton in third, and on current form he is the driver nobody wants to see in their mirrors for the closing rounds. Two months ago, Red Bull were explaining why they could not win. They have now won three times in eight days.

Race Standings

Verstappen’s blue line is perfectly flat from lights to flag: 62 laps led, his 73rd win, and his first at Marina Bay, on his 250th Grand Prix start, despite losing his radio and racing off the pit board. Behind him, the chart reads in three phases. Hamilton’s red line dips from third to seventh around lap 18, his early stop, then climbs back to third by lap 33 as the cars ahead cycle through theirs. Between laps 24 and 34 the McLarens rise to second and third, which is not pace but the one stoppers staying out while Leclerc and Antonelli stop. The genuinely telling movement is late. Hamilton holds third for twenty laps and then drops to sixth across the final eight, passed by Antonelli around lap 54, Norris and then Piastri. That is a set of tyres giving up, and the strategy chart explains why. Russell’s teal line is the other quiet story, climbing steadily from the back to ninth for two points. Leclerc and Antonelli trade places twice between laps 39 and 46 as their second stops cycle through, with the Ferrari ending up clearly the quicker of the two.

Tyre Strategy

The winning plan was the simplest on the board. Verstappen started on a new Soft, ran it to lap 32 and took Mediums to the flag, a one stop matched exactly by Norris, who finished fourth. Leclerc and Antonelli both went the other way: two stops, both opening and closing on used Softs with a Medium in between, stopping on laps 24 and 23, then both again on lap 39. That second stint on fresh rubber is where Leclerc set the fastest lap of the race, a 1:35.202 on lap 41, but the extra stop left him 7.3 seconds short. Hamilton’s row is the outlier and the explanation for his fade. He started on Mediums, stopped first of the leaders on lap 18, then asked a used Soft to last 44 laps to the flag. Singapore’s surface and night temperatures make that just about possible, and it held track position for most of the second half, but no Soft survives that distance without giving up pace at the end, and the standings show exactly when it went. Piastri’s three stint plan, Soft, a short Medium, then used Soft from lap 41, delivered fifth. Lindblad and Gasly ran similarly long used Soft finishes from laps 26 and 29.

Pit Times

A mean of 24.57 seconds with nine of eleven teams inside a single second of each other makes this one of the tightest pit lane charts of the season. Worth noting that these are total pit lane transit times, not stationary times, so the differences reflect entry, exit and stationary work combined. Mercedes head it at 23.82 seconds, with Aston Martin second at 24.00 and Red Bull third at 24.13. Ferrari’s 24.26 is the figure that matters most for the result. Leclerc made two stops to Verstappen’s one and finished 7.335 seconds behind, which means a second visit to a lane averaging over 24 seconds was very nearly paid back by fresher tyres. That is a strategy that came close to working, and it took a clean Ferrari crew to keep it close. McLaren at 24.57 sit exactly on the mean and both cars were clean one or two stops without drama. Cadillac’s 26.56 is two seconds adrift of the field and the only genuine outlier, though with Perez two laps down and Bottas three, the pit lane was hardly where their evening was lost.

Reaction Times

Read the relative spread rather than the absolute figures, given the constant delay. Norris had the sharpest launch on the grid at 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h, with Sainz matching him off the line. The interesting comparison is at the front. Verstappen managed 3.2 seconds from pole, a tenth slower than Leclerc alongside him at 3.1, and the two were identical through the 100 to 200 phase at 2.1. Leclerc had marginally the better getaway and duly attacked into Turn 1, but Verstappen held the inside and never saw the Ferrari ahead of him again. A launch deficit only matters if the car behind can do something with it, and on the run to the first braking zone here, a tenth was not enough. Russell’s 3.0 and 2.2 from the back of the grid was a genuinely good start for a car carrying a power unit penalty, and Antonelli’s 2.1 in the second phase was among the best on the board. Lindblad propped up the chart at 3.5 to 100. Albon’s 2.7 through the second phase is the slowest increment of anyone, the classic signature of a driver lifting in traffic rather than a slow car. Hadjar does not appear, having started from the pit lane.

Where it went wrong. Five errors, two of them the FIA’s, that changed results at Marina Bay.

The first and worst was the FIA’s. When Perez brought out a red flag in SQ1 by putting his Cadillac in the barrier, Overtake Mode was disabled for the stoppage and then not restored when the session resumed with six minutes remaining. Once somebody noticed, race control re enabled it for 27 seconds inside the final minute and then disabled it again. The FIA’s own statement concedes that “this unfortunate human error had an impact on the performance of certain cars based on the timing of their run and their position around the lap”, and that SQ2 and SQ3 were unaffected. The mechanism is not marginal. Overtake Mode carries an extra 0.5 MJ and raises the speed at which electrical deployment must taper from 290 km/h to roughly 337 km/h, which on a lap made of short full throttle bursts is a materially different power delivery. Sainz, eliminated 22nd, put it at about half a second and said half the cars ran with a quicker engine than the other half. Aston Martin believed Stroll would have progressed without it and chose not to protest; Williams petitioned for the entire field to be promoted to SQ2 and were refused. Restarting the session was not practical because tyres had already been used. There is no clean remedy for this once it has happened, which is precisely why it should not happen.

The second was also the FIA’s, and it decided a stewards’ case. A separate timing failure in SQ1 did not register some lap times and delayed SQ2 by around fifteen minutes. Then in Q2, with Hulkenberg on a cool down lap on the racing line into Turn 5 and Sainz arriving behind on a push lap, the official timing feed reaching the teams was not fully synchronised and displayed incorrectly for a short period. Audi read it as Sainz having already taken the chequered flag and told their driver so. Williams read the same feed the same way. The correction arrived after Sainz was already on Hulkenberg’s gearbox, so no message could have fixed it in time. Sainz abandoned the lap and went out fourteenth. The stewards found he had been “unnecessarily” impeded, then applied “extraordinary mitigating circumstances” and imposed no grid drop, which is the correct outcome given the cause and an uncomfortable one given that the cause was the governing body’s own data feed. Two teams were wrong at the same moment because both were reading a single external source with no independent cross check, which is a structural point about how modern garages work rather than a criticism of either.

The third was Ferrari’s, and Hamilton took it on himself before anybody asked. The decision to commit to a one stop from a new medium was defensible on Sunday morning. The decision to decline the double stack behind Leclerc when the lap 39 virtual safety car handed the field a discounted pit stop was not, and it is harder to defend because Ferrari had already worked out the governing principle. Fred Vasseur said the team split strategies specifically because the soft had turned out stronger than expected against the medium. Having reached that conclusion, declining free softs at twenty one laps of stint age is the wrong side of your own analysis. Hamilton’s radio call was unambiguous: “Sorry boys. I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points.” He later added that he takes full responsibility for the decisions he made. Four positions went in fifteen laps and Ferrari left Marina Bay with 23 points instead of a plausible 33.

The fourth was McLaren’s and it happened on Saturday. Two cars running fourth and fifth on the last lap of a sprint, with nine points between them and no championship position at stake in that particular fight, is the textbook situation for a hold position instruction. Instead Norris went down the inside at Turn 5, both cars spun, and the team scored one point. The stewards found both had contributed and neither was wholly or predominantly to blame, which is the procedurally correct finding and also an indictment of the team rather than either driver. Andrea Stella’s response was “seeing two McLarens making contact like that is simply not acceptable” and a stated intention to remind both men that “the team interest is far bigger than any of us”. Norris’s own account was that it remains his fault but that he deserved the space. McLaren are third in the constructors’ championship, eleven points clear of Red Bull, and describing themselves as the fourth quickest car. Eight thrown away points is the margin that decides where they finish.

The fifth is Mercedes’ and it is a reliability failure rather than a judgement one, though the two have become entangled. Russell arrived at Singapore needing a fifth internal combustion engine, a fifth turbocharger, a fifth exhaust set and a fourth MGU K, which the FIA’s decision document of 9 October converted into a forty place drop under Article B8.2.8 at ten places per element, following breaches of Articles B8.2.2 read with B8.2.3. The team then changed the energy store and the control electronics, adding twenty more for a final total of sixty. Five ICEs and five turbos by round seventeen, in a season whose power unit regulations were written to be survivable, is an attrition rate the championship leading car has not suffered, and it has fallen entirely on the driver lying second. The weekend then compounded it: the single stop Russell did take was made as the second virtual safety car ended, so he entered the pit lane at full price and finished ninth having had, in his own words, the sort of luck that sums up his season. Aston Martin deserve an honourable mention in the same paragraph for overnight parc ferme changes that put both cars in the pit lane before a wheel turned on Sunday.

The Circuit

There is no other race on the calendar quite like Singapore. Nineteen corners, 4.927 kilometres, 62 laps, run anti-clockwise, entirely under floodlights, in thirty degrees of tropical heat with humidity that turns the air into soup. Races here routinely run close to the two-hour limit, and the circuit organisers report that drivers can lose up to three kilograms in body weight over the distance, a product of the sustained heat, the humidity and the repeated load through nineteen corners.

It is, by common consent, the most physically punishing weekend of the year. For an engineer, it’s also the most thermally punishing, and in 2026 that matters more than it ever has.

Two things to flag before we go round. The 2026 running is a sprint weekend, held from 9 to 11 October with the race on Sunday night. One practice session. On the bumpiest, most unforgiving, lowest-margin circuit of the season, with a car generation that’s still being learned. That’s a serious constraint and it will produce mistakes.

And the layout you’re watching is the post-2023 configuration, when the old Turns 16 to 19 were replaced with a near-400-metre straight, with further minor refinements in 2025 settling the current 4.927km version. The circuit is quicker and less fiddly than the 23-corner monster that used to grind out two-hour races, but it has lost none of its capacity to punish.

Heat, energy and the problem nobody has solved

Here’s the 2026 angle that I don’t think has been talked about enough.

Singapore behaves like Monaco and the Hungaroring in energy terms. Nineteen corners, no straight long enough to properly drain a battery, and a braking event every few seconds. The harvesting is relentless and the state of charge barely moves. Nobody is running out of energy here, and that has the same consequence it had in Monaco and Budapest: when everyone arrives at every corner with a full store, the Overtake Mode boost stops being a differentiator. You deploy, your rival deploys, and the gap stays exactly where it was.

But Singapore adds a variable those two don’t have, and it’s the one that keeps power unit engineers awake.

Heat rejection. The 2026 power unit runs an MGU-K uprated to 350kW with a substantially larger battery, and every joule that goes in and out of that system generates heat that has to go somewhere. In Monaco the ambient is pleasant and the car gets airflow. In Singapore the ambient is thirty degrees at eight in the evening, the humidity is brutal, the average speed is among the lowest of the year, and the cars spend two hours in traffic with dirty air and minimal cooling flow.

That is close to a worst-case scenario for an electrified power unit. You are harvesting almost continuously, deploying almost continuously, and cooling almost not at all. Expect to see teams running their largest cooling apertures of the season, which costs aerodynamic performance, and expect at least one team to find itself derating on Sunday night because the battery or the inverter has gone over temperature. The teams who built genuine thermal headroom into their 2026 concept get their reward here. The ones who packaged aggressively for aero gain will be sweating as much as the drivers.

There’s a driver-side consequence too. Cockpit temperatures in Singapore have always been punishing, and a larger, hotter energy store sitting behind the driver in a car that’s already a sauna is not going to improve matters.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 7

Lights out on the pit straight and into Sheares, Turn 1, a left-hander at the end of the main straight. It’s the heaviest braking zone of the lap and the best overtaking opportunity, which at Singapore is faint praise but it’s genuine. Turn 1 into the Turn 2 and 3 sequence is a properly technical opening, because you brake hard for the first, immediately switch direction for the second, and any scruffiness compounds through the third.

The 2026 car should help here, and this is the headline good news of the weekend. Take 100mm off the width and 200mm off the wheelbase, and a circuit with nineteen corners and walls on both sides becomes measurably more manageable. Marina Bay has been too small for Formula 1 cars for the best part of a decade, in the same way Zandvoort and the Hungaroring were. The 2026 generation finally fits. Two cars genuinely side by side through the opening sequence is now a realistic proposition rather than a wishful one.

The track then runs through Kallang before crossing into the Downtown Core at Turn 4. Turns 5, 6 and 7 are a linked sequence of medium-speed corners along Nicoll Highway, and this is where the surface starts telling you about itself. Singapore is a public road, resurfaced in patches, and it is bumpy in a way that permanent circuits simply aren’t. The 2026 cars run less aerodynamic load and correspondingly softer mechanical set-ups than the ground-effect machines that have been crashing over these bumps in recent years, which should actually make them better suited to the surface. Watch for that.

The tyre story starts here and it’s traction-led. Pirelli bring their harder compounds, C3, C4 and C5, because the bumpy street surface creates higher-than-average tyre wear. Combine an abrasive, uneven surface with a track temperature that stays high all evening and a power unit putting big torque through the rears out of a succession of slow corners, and the rear tyres take a hammering from lap one. The discipline to be smooth on the throttle on heavy fuel is worth more here than anywhere except Monaco.

Sector 2: Turns 8 to 13

The historic heart of the lap, and the part that looks most spectacular on television.

The route takes in Stamford Road, St Andrew’s Road around the Padang, past City Hall, over Anderson Bridge and past the Fullerton Hotel. It’s a sequence of tight, enclosed, right-angled corners threaded between colonial architecture, with walls close enough that a half-metre error ends your evening.

Turn 10 deserves a note of history. This was the Singapore Sling, the notorious chicane that launched cars into the air and which the drivers despised. It was removed for 2013 and replaced with a single-apex left-hander, raising the corner entry speed by around 40km/h, and drivers have commented that without the Singapore Sling chicane the track is much more manageable. It’s now a fast, flowing left rather than a suspension-destroyer, and it’s one of the few corners here where a driver can genuinely carry speed.

The Turn 11, 12, 13 complex was reworked in 2015. Turn 11 was realigned tighter against Fullerton Road for a slightly slower corner speed, Turn 12 modified so drivers enter the left lane of Anderson Bridge before accelerating towards Turn 13 at around 200km/h, and the Turn 13 hairpin was widened by a metre specifically to enable more overtaking.

That extra metre matters more in 2026 than it did in 2015, because the cars are now 100mm narrower on top of it. Turn 13 is the second real overtaking opportunity of the lap, approached from Anderson Bridge with reasonable speed, and it’s a corner where a brave late move can now actually stick rather than simply resulting in two cars going off.

For the engineers, this sector is about brakes. Nineteen corners, low average speed, poor cooling airflow and two hours of running is the classic recipe for brake temperature problems, and Singapore has cooked its share over the years. Add a regenerative braking system working hard on every single stop, in thirty-degree ambient, and the brake and ERS thermal management through the middle sector becomes the quiet engineering story of Sunday night.

Track familiarity is worth a lot here, incidentally, and the sprint format takes it away. Marina Bay demands confidence built lap by lap, and one practice session before everything starts counting for points is going to leave several drivers underprepared for the walls in this sector.

Sector 3: Turns 14 to 19

Out along Esplanade Drive past the Merlion and back via Raffles Avenue around the Singapore Flyer, and into the part of the circuit that was redrawn in 2023.

The near-400-metre straight that replaced the old Turns 16 to 19 transformed this sector. Where there used to be a fiddly, slow, wall-lined sequence that produced nothing but frustration, there is now a proper acceleration zone with a braking event at the end of it. Straight Mode will almost certainly be active here, given it clears the three-second minimum activation requirement comfortably, and it gives the circuit a genuine third passing opportunity.

That straight is the single most important change to Singapore’s racing character in the circuit’s history, and it’s why the 2024 race became the first Singapore Grand Prix to be run without a safety car intervention, ending a streak of sixteen consecutive editions from the inaugural race in 2008. Removing the slowest, most accident-prone corners cleaned the race up considerably. Whether that’s entirely a good thing is a matter of taste.

The lap closes through Turns 18 and 19, the final corners before the start-finish straight, where cars brake hard and then accelerate onto the pit straight. Same equation as everywhere else: get the exit of the last corner right and you’re a threat into Turn 1. Get it wrong and you’re defending for the whole of the following lap. On a circuit where passing is this scarce, the discipline to nurse a tired set of tyres through the final corner without running wide is worth more than any amount of one-lap pace.

What decides Sunday night

Qualifying, as it always has been. Track position at Marina Bay is gold, and the sprint format doubles down by making Saturday’s result matter for points too.

The safety car, second. The sixteen-race streak is broken but the probability remains among the highest on the calendar, and with a mandatory two-stop in play, a well-timed caution is worth a race win. Any strategy briefing for Singapore that doesn’t start with safety car probability isn’t a strategy briefing.

Thermal management, third, and this is the new one. Nineteen corners in thirty-degree heat with a power unit that harvests continuously and cools poorly is the hardest cooling problem of the 2026 season. The teams with headroom will look untroubled. The teams without will be managing temperatures from lap ten and losing lap time they can’t explain to the commentators.

And the drivers themselves. Two hours, three kilograms, a hot cockpit and no margin for error against the walls. Singapore has always separated the fit from the merely fast, and nothing about the 2026 regulations changes that.

Hamilton’s 1:33.808 from 2025 stands as the race lap record and it’s not falling this year, not with the aero cut. But a Marina Bay where the cars actually fit between the walls, where the 2023 straight gives a third genuine passing chance, and where the cooling challenge might quietly decide the race is a Singapore worth staying up for. Wherever you are, whatever time it is, this remains the best-looking race on the calendar and one of the hardest to win.

Qualifying

Verstappen took pole with a 1:35.130, 0.298 seconds clear of Hamilton and 0.428 clear of Hadjar, all on two lap Softs, and the sector arithmetic is more interesting than the margin. Hamilton was quickest in the middle sector at 31.201, which works out at 0.304 seconds better than Verstappen managed there on the same lap. He still lost by three tenths, which means Verstappen took six tenths out of him across the first and final sectors combined. The throttle trace shows where Hamilton earned his sector two: between roughly 1,900 and 2,200 metres both Red Bulls modulate the throttle through the fast sequence while the Ferrari holds it noticeably higher, a sign of a car with genuine front end confidence in the quick stuff. Everywhere else the Red Bull downforce map story plays out in the speed channel. Down the long run between 4,400 and 4,900 metres, Verstappen and Hadjar sit around 305 to 308 km/h against Hamilton’s 300, and the same pattern repeats on the straight into sector three around 3,700 metres. Ideal lap from the three sector bests is a 1:34.826, three tenths inside the pole time, so nobody nailed it, but Verstappen got closest where it mattered.

Read this against the Baku chart from last week and the order has flipped. Mercedes, who sat alone in the high efficiency corner in Azerbaijan, have moved firmly into the high downforce quadrant here, posting roughly 206 km/h average speed but only 316 km/h at the trap. Ferrari sit almost on top of them, which tells you both teams read Sepang the same way: a long, loaded lap of fast sweepers where cornering load is worth more than a few km/h at the end of the straights. Red Bull made a different trade and it is the one that paid. They are the only team clear of the high efficiency diagonal, combining the best average speed on the grid, close to 207 km/h, with 321 km/h at the trap, five clear of Mercedes. That is not a wing choice so much as a better aerodynamic package on the day, and it is exactly what put both cars at the front. McLaren are an awkward outlier, carrying high downforce drag at 315 km/h without the average speed to justify it, which is the worst version of that compromise. At the margins, Cadillac went to the extreme low downforce corner for 328 km/h and paid for it everywhere else, while Aston Martin’s 310 km/h with sub 203 average speed is the poorest efficiency on the board by some distance.and still landing in the worst quadrant on the map is a difficult result to explain away.

Pre Race Chaos

Sepang did what Sepang does. Torrential rain arrived forty minutes before the scheduled start and pushed it back; then, on the formation lap behind the safety car, the field began to lose drive. The FIA had reduced electrical output to 250 kW for wet conditions, the first use of that parameter all season, and at formation lap speeds the turbos spun down far enough to drop power units into failsafe. Hamilton’s Ferrari, both Audis, both Haas cars, both Cadillacs, one Alpine and one Racing Bulls lost power. Verstappen reported the same symptom. Cars scattered and stopped, the procedure was suspended, the field was sent back to the pit lane and the race was red flagged. A software release lifting the energy limit in the affected sectors was written, distributed and validated in around twenty minutes. The race started 93 minutes late, and race control restored the original grid order for a standing restart, which put Hamilton back on the front row after he had stopped on the back straight.

The decisive call of the afternoon was therefore made in the pit lane rather than on the pit wall. Nine drivers took intermediates. Thirteen took slicks, both Ferraris and both McLarens among them. The track was not ready for them. Piastri and both Audis came straight back in for intermediates, and in all six of the slick starters gave up and switched within the opening phase. Hamilton and Leclerc did not, and that is the race in one decision.

Race Summary and Analysis

Verstappen, on the right tyre and from pole, promptly lost the lead at Turn 1 to both Mercedes, Antonelli leading Russell. It took him six laps to clear Russell and the first safety car to get back ahead of Antonelli. That safety car came on lap 9 for Bottas, who had spun the Cadillac out after seven laps, and it bunched the field for a restart on lap 15. From there Verstappen was comfortable: Russell briefly held second, Antonelli took it back by lap 21, and Verstappen built a lead beyond ten seconds while the two Mercedes sorted themselves out.

Hamilton’s race is the one worth the telemetry. He restarted the race seventeenth and 80 seconds off the lead, shedding something like fifteen seconds a lap while the intermediate runners circulated. Ferrari suggested he come in for intermediates. He refused, on the reasonable argument that the surface was drying towards him rather than away from him, and he was right. He took the lap 15 restart fifteenth and by lap 22 he was fifth and in clear air, which is ten places in seven laps. On that first set of softs he ran 31 laps and matched Antonelli’s pace on mediums nine laps fresher, within a fraction of Verstappen. The stop on lap 32 for mediums was the only part of his race that went backwards: the set never came in, lost roughly half a second a lap to Verstappen and degraded rather than improved as the fuel came off.

With nine laps left Albon’s Williams stopped and brought out a virtual safety car and then a safety car. Verstappen and Antonelli both took the free stop and came back out on fresh softs, which is why the winning margin is 2.307s rather than something nearer ten. Hamilton took softs too and his pace immediately came back. Russell, running third, did not get that far: his Mercedes stopped on the start and finish straight on lap 4 with a suspected power unit failure, under the safety car, with fifteen points in his pocket. The restart with three laps to go undid two more races. Norris misjudged the braking into Turn 1, slithered through the gravel and dropped from seventh to ninth. Hadjar, who had inherited third from Russell, found himself with no deployment, lost third to Hamilton and then fourth to Leclerc on consecutive laps, and finished fifth without knowing why the battery had gone.

Two structural points about the race itself. The first is that it ran 55 laps against a scheduled 56 and 310.398 km; the reason for the reduction was not published, and the winner’s elapsed time of 1h 47m 15s is comfortably inside the two hour racing limit, so it was not a timed cut off during green flag running. The second is that the
only dry weather read on relative pace came in the middle third, and it flattered Red Bull: Verstappen pulled beyond ten seconds on Antonelli while both were managing the same softs and the same restart sequence, on a circuit where Mercedes had brought an upgrade and gone backwards with it. That is a sample of perhaps twenty laps on a drying surface and it should not be read as a shift in the competitive order, but it is the clearest run of clean dry pace either car had all afternoon and the Mercedes lost it.

Verstappen took the fastest lap on the final tour, a 1:38.220, and won by 2.307s from Antonelli with Hamilton 4.919s back and Leclerc 7.258s. For the championship it was a bad afternoon disguised as a good one for Mercedes: Antonelli’s second place stretched his lead over Russell to 84 points with seven rounds remaining, which is a season high and entirely the product of his team mate’s reliability rather than his own pace. Hamilton’s podium moved him to within 22 points of Russell. Red Bull’s 25 points, scored with its own power unit, pulled it to within 18 of McLaren in the constructors’ championship.

Race Standings

The opening laps are the most violent movement on any chart this season. Two Ferrari’s start near the front and fall almost vertically to the bottom of the board within the first couple of laps, which is the Ferrari slick tyre gamble going wrong in the wet. The two Mercedes, on intermediates, both beat Verstappen into Turn 1, and the teal line holds P1 for the opening dozen laps. Verstappen takes over around lap 13 and does not move again except for a brief swap near lap 44, the late neutralisation for Albon’s stranded Williams compressing the field before he cleared off again. The genuinely impressive trace is Hamilton’s. From the bottom of the order at lap two, the line climbs steadily and without a single backward step, reaching fifth by lap 22 and third by lap 53. Recovering twenty places on the circuit is not something strategy alone hands you. Russell’s ends abruptly at lap 49 while running third, which is the race’s biggest consequence: Antonelli leaves Sepang 84 points clear with seven rounds remaining. Bottas departs at lap seven, triggering the safety car that reshaped every strategy behind.

Tyre Strategy

Read the green first. a chuck of cars started on intermediates and pitted together at lap nine, and Bottas’s row ending at lap eight identifies why: his spin brought out the safety car at precisely the wet to dry crossover, handing the intermediate runners a discounted switch to slicks. The cars that did not start on green are the story. Hamilton started on a new Soft and simply never pitted under that safety car, running the same set to lap 31. Committing to slicks on a wet track cost him twenty places, but it also meant he was already on the right tyre when everyone else paid to change, and that Soft lasted 31 laps on a drying, rubbering in surface. Leclerc started on slicks too but bailed for intermediates at lap three, then back to slicks at nine, which is two stops spent undoing a decision Hamilton chose to live with. The second cluster, laps 43 to 45, is the late neutralisation. Almost the whole front of the field took used Softs for the restart, Verstappen included, and his stint sequence reads Inter, Soft, Soft, Soft. Antonelli is the outlier among the leaders, the only one to run a Medium middle stint, and it left him 2.3 seconds short.

Pit Times

A mean of 29.10 seconds and a spread of almost five seconds from top to bottom, which is wide for a conventional permanent circuit pit lane and mostly reflects how chaotic the afternoon was rather than how good the crews were. Mercedes top the chart at 27.68 seconds, with Red Bull just nine hundredths behind at 27.77. Given Verstappen beat Antonelli by 2.307 seconds after 55 laps, that near parity in the lane matters: neither team gained anything on the other in the stops, so the win was decided on track. The bar that does the most quiet damage is Ferrari’s. At 29.77 seconds, they sit two seconds per stop slower than Mercedes, and Hamilton ran a two stop race. On paper, that is around four seconds lost in the lane against a car that finished 2.6 seconds ahead of him on the road. A clean afternoon from the crew and Hamilton is arguably racing Antonelli for second rather than defending third. Aston Martin’s 27.85 is worth a mention given Alonso converted it into eighth. At the back, Williams at 31.26 and Cadillac at 32.56 read as messy races rather than slow crews, with both teams losing a car before the flag.

The Circuit

Nine years. That’s how long it’s been since a Formula 1 car turned a wheel in anger at Sepang, and almost nobody expected it back. Then the Middle East conflict took Bahrain and Saudi Arabia off the calendar, Formula 1 went looking for somewhere to put a Grand Prix, and Malaysia put its hand up.

The result is one of the stranger entries in the sport’s history. The race runs from 2 to 4 October 2026 and is officially the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, an agreement reached between Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain and the Government of Malaysia that allows Formula 1 to preserve a Grand Prix that would otherwise not have happened. So it’s the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Sepang, ticketed by the Bahrain International Circuit. Write that down and read it back and it still sounds wrong.

Whatever it’s called, the important thing is that the sport is back at what many regard as Hermann Tilke’s finest work. The 5.543km layout hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017, and it’s famous for extreme tropical heat, monsoon-class downpours, and an abrasive surface that produces some of the highest tyre wear of any modern F1 circuit. Fifteen corners, eight straights, a minimum width of 16 metres rising to 20 in places, and two long straights separated by a single tight hairpin.

It slots into a triple-header with Baku and Singapore, which is a brutal piece of scheduling for the teams and an interesting one for the engineers, because Sepang and Singapore back to back means two of the hottest, most humid weekends of the year in the space of eight days.

The three unknowns

Before we walk the lap, it’s worth naming what nobody actually knows going into this weekend, because it’s a longer list than usual.

Nobody has current data. Ten drivers on the current grid have raced at Sepang, but the most recent of those was 2017, in a car from a completely different regulatory era. Nobody has driven here in a ground-effect car, let alone a 2026 machine. The simulator models will be built on nine-year-old track scans and whatever the teams can get from GT and MotoGP running. This is closer to the Madrid situation than to a normal calendar round: track familiarity, which is worth almost nothing at Monza because everyone has it, is genuinely scarce here.

Nobody knows what the surface does now. The circuit was extensively reworked in 2016, when nine corners were renovated and Turn 15 was raised by a metre to change the racing line and improve overtaking. Gradients were altered at Turns 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 12, and the resurfacing took away many of the bumps on the runs down to Turns 1 and 4. At the time, Pirelli reported the new tarmac was only slightly less rough than before, with the steeper banking increasing lateral and longitudinal loads and the dark asphalt dissipating more heat, causing higher thermal degradation than the old surface. That was ten years ago. A decade of equatorial sun, monsoon rain and non-Formula 1 traffic will have changed it again, and in which direction is anyone’s guess.

Nobody knows how the 2026 power unit copes with that kind of heat. Track temperature at Sepang often reaches 60 degrees. The 2026 power unit runs a 350kW MGU-K and a substantially larger battery, and every joule cycling through that system generates heat that has to be rejected somewhere. Singapore will already have tested this, but Sepang’s ambient is arguably worse, and the fact the two races fall eight days apart means the teams are bringing their maximum cooling packages for a fortnight and accepting the aerodynamic cost throughout.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 4

The lap begins with the longest full-throttle run on the circuit and ends it at Turn 1, which is one of the great deceptive corners in Formula 1.

Turn 1 is a very long, slow corner taken in second gear, where most drivers brake incredibly late and lose speed gradually as they file round, similar to Shanghai’s first turn but slower. The braking reference is late, there are plenty of visual cues, and the line through it is always a compromise, because you need to get most of the way back over to the right to set yourself up for Turn 2.

That compromise is the whole story of the opening sector. Win Turn 1 by braking heroically late and you’ll be on the wrong line for Turn 2, at which point whoever you just passed comes straight back at you. It’s the Baku Turn 1 problem all over again, except the corner is longer and the punishment more drawn out.

Turn 2 is a tight left hairpin that goes downhill quite significantly, with the circuit dropping away just before the apex in a way that easily generates a mistake. Patience is the instruction. The exit matters enormously because it leads onto a long straight, and good traction here is essential.

That’s the first real 2026 test of the weekend. Traction out of a downhill-apex hairpin, on an abrasive surface at 60 degrees, with a power unit putting substantial torque through the rear axle. Get greedy and you’ll light up the rears on lap one and pay for it across the entire stint.

Turn 3 is an acceleration zone rather than a corner in a car with this much downforce, and then it’s heavy braking into Turn 4. Turn 4 and Turn 5 are fast corners requiring stiff suspension, and the useful detail here is that the car can be set lower and stiffer because there are no large kerbs at Sepang. That’s a genuine set-up freedom the 2026 cars will appreciate, because a low, stiff platform is exactly what you want for aerodynamic consistency and exactly what most street and kerb-heavy circuits deny you.

Sector 2: Turns 5 to 11

The middle sector mixes medium-speed corners with long-radius turns, placing a premium on aerodynamic balance and tyre management. This is where Sepang separates the well-balanced cars from the merely powerful ones, and it’s where the 2026 downforce cut will make itself felt.

The corner to watch is Turn 7, which is tough on tyres because you enter it on the brakes. Braking while turning loads the outside front tyre with both longitudinal and lateral force simultaneously, and doing that repeatedly on an abrasive surface in tropical heat is precisely how you destroy a front-left. Across a stint, Turn 7 is the corner that quietly determines whether you have a tyre at the end of it.

Turns 8 through 11 run through the infield in a sequence of medium-speed and long-radius corners where the car is loaded for extended periods. Long-radius corners are thermally brutal in a way that quick direction changes aren’t: the tyre is held at high slip angle for seconds at a time with no chance to cool, and the surface temperature climbs and climbs.

Put it all together and you have the tyre story of the weekend. Sepang has historically produced some of the highest degradation of any circuit on the calendar, driven by abrasive asphalt, fast corners and high ambient temperatures, with braking accounting for 17 percent of the lap on top. That was true with a one-stop convention and Pirelli’s older constructions. In 2026, with a mandatory two-stop and all three compounds obligatory, the strategic picture becomes genuinely open. There is a real chance Sepang produces a natural three-stop, which would make it one of very few races this season where the mandated two-stop is a floor rather than a ceiling.

Track width helps the racing enormously through here. With a minimum of 16 metres rising to 20 in places, two cars can genuinely run side by side rather than queueing, which is a luxury after Baku’s castle section and whatever Singapore throws up a week later.

Sector 3: Turns 12 to 15

The best part of the lap, and the part that made Sepang beloved.

Turns 12 and 13 are a high-speed left-right that demands confidence, where vision is critical and smoothness with the steering and pedals is everything. It’s the corner sequence drivers name when asked what they miss about this place, and in a 2026 car with 15 to 30 percent less downforce than the ground-effect generation, it becomes a proper question again rather than a formality. Expect a genuine spread between the committed and the cautious here in qualifying, exactly as at Copse and Blanchimont.

Turn 14 fires you onto the back straight, which at 927 metres is the second of the circuit’s two big acceleration zones. This is a Straight Mode zone almost certainly, and it’s where the energy question gets interesting.

Sepang sits awkwardly between the two extremes we’ve seen this season. It has the long full-throttle runs of a power circuit, which drain the battery, but it also has heavy braking accounting for nearly a fifth of the lap, which fills it back up. That combination should mean the cars arrive at the end of both straights with charge intact, unlike Monza, where the recovery simply isn’t there. But the back straight is long enough that a team who models it badly could still find themselves clipping in the final two hundred metres, which brings us to the important bit.

Turn 15 is a big braking zone at the end of a long straight, preceding the last turn that leads onto the start-finish straight. It provides a good overtaking opportunity, and several lines are used here. Following the 2016 work, when the hairpin was raised by a metre specifically to change the racing line and improve passing, it became an even better corner.

This is the defining overtaking spot of the circuit, and the classic Sepang recipe: heavy braking at the end of a full-throttle run with an alternative line into the corner. Add the Overtake Mode boost, deployed at the driver’s discretion rather than in a fixed zone as DRS was, and the passing here should be better than it has ever been. A driver can attack into the hairpin and then defend on the run towards Turn 1, which is exactly the sort of two-corner battle the new regulations were supposed to produce and which too many circuits this season have failed to deliver.

What decides Sunday

The weather, first, and I don’t say that lightly. Sepang’s tropical storms can transform a dry race into a strategic gamble within minutes, and the circuit’s history is littered with them: Alonso’s wet-weather victory in 2012, the 2009 race stopped after torrential rain. Early October sits in the inter-monsoon period, afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and the race start time will put the cars on track in precisely the window when they tend to arrive. Every engineer in that pit lane will be watching radar more closely than lap times.

Tyre degradation, second. This is the highest-wear circuit the sport has visited in years, the surface is an unknown quantity after a decade away, and the mandatory two-stop may not even be the optimal strategy. The team that reads Friday’s degradation data correctly wins the race.

Cooling, third, and it applies to car and driver equally. Sixty-degree track temperature, tropical humidity and a power unit that generates more heat than its predecessor is the hardest thermal weekend of the year, made harder by the fact that Singapore follows eight days later with no chance to redesign anything in between.

And the learning curve, because nine years is a long time. The drivers who have been here before have an edge that no simulator fully replaces, and the ones who haven’t will spend Friday finding out why everyone was so pleased to see this circuit come back.

Whatever the race ends up being called, this is a proper circuit returning to a calendar that has missed it. Fast, wide, technically demanding without being narrow or processional, and cruel to anyone who gets their tyres or their cooling wrong. If it produces the racing it used to, the argument for keeping it beyond 2026 will make itself.v

Qualifying

Start with the arithmetic, because it is the most remarkable thing on the board. Russell’s three sector bests, 36.009, 41.659 and 24.858, add to exactly 1:42.526. That is his pole time to the thousandth, which means he swept every sector on the same lap and left nothing whatsoever on the table. Drivers talk about stringing it together; this is what it looks like in data. Best qualifying margin since 2006. He improved with every run in Q3 and finished eight tenths clear of Leclerc, with Piastri a further thousandth back, and called it probably the biggest margin of his entire career including his junior years. Where the time comes from is less dramatic than the gap suggests. Through the opening sector and the castle section the three traces are near enough interchangeable, with only minor throttle modulation separating Leclerc’s red line from the others. The visible gains are concentrated in the last third: Russell carries a handful of km/h more through the Turn 13 to 15 sweep, then arrives at the trap around 331 km/h against roughly 325 for the other two. Six km/h on a two kilometre straight is worth real time. The detail worth flagging is tyre age. Russell set this on a set with seven laps on it, against five for Leclerc and two for Piastri. Pole by eight tenths on the oldest rubber of the three is not a small thing.

This chart explains the margin more completely than the telemetry does. Mercedes sit alone in the high efficiency corner, top right, posting both the highest top speed on the grid at 331 km/h and the highest average speed at roughly 209 km/h. That combination is the whole story. Every other team on this map is making a trade: Williams have gone low downforce and bought 327 km/h at the cost of average speed, while Red Bull have gone the other way entirely, accepting 322 km/h in exchange for cornering load. Mercedes are not trading at all. They are simply carrying more downforce for less drag than anyone else, which is the definition of a better aerodynamic package rather than a cleverer setup choice, and it is why their qualifying advantage over the field has never been bigger this season. Red Bull’s position is worth a second look given Hadjar out qualified Verstappen by over half a second on his return from injury, which suggests the high downforce direction was not the problem. The most damning entries are bottom left. Audi and Aston Martin occupy the low efficiency corner, poor on both axes, and both Audis were eliminated in Q1 despite the team bringing major upgrades to Baku. Arriving with a significant package and still landing in the worst quadrant on the map is a difficult result to explain away.

Race Summary and Analysis

George Russell converted the largest pole margin of the season into a win by one of the smallest margins of it. Having qualified eight tenths clear, he took the flag 0.196 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen in a 51 lap race that produced six retirements and two safety car periods. It was his third victory of 2026 and his first since Austria back in round eight, and it came at exactly the moment his championship needed it, with his team mate starting sixteenth after Friday’s qualifying crash.

The first half was controlled rather than contested. Russell built on a strong start and simply extended, leaving Oscar Piastri to act as the cork in the bottle while the Red Bull pair of Verstappen and Isack Hadjar queued up behind him. That is the Baku dynamic in a sentence. The two kilometre run to Turn 1 means a defending car is effectively re fighting the same battle every lap with a diminishing tyre, and the McLaren’s job was always going to be finite. Every lap Piastri held them was a lap Russell banked in clean air.

The race turned when Alex Albon made an error and brought out the safety car, and Russell then had to defend a restart he had not asked for. Restarts at this circuit are a specific engineering problem: brake discs drop well below their operating window behind the safety car, tyre surface temperature goes with them, and the leader must then judge his launch knowing the car behind has a two kilometre slipstream in which to use whatever advantage it finds. Arvid Lindblad was openly critical of how the restarts were managed, and he was not alone in finding them awkward.

The second neutralisation was uglier. Franco Colapinto locked up and collected both his own team mate Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris, ending all three races. He was the only driver to lock both front wheels and hit two cars simultaneously, and while Carlos Sainz offered mitigation in the form of tricky tyres, a dirty circuit and what he called weird power delivery from the 2026 engines, the consensus was unsympathetic. Norris called for a race ban and Alpine said they would consider what action to take against their own driver. Colapinto’s unserved ten second penalty was subsequently converted into a five place grid drop for the next round. The mechanism is straightforward enough: cold carbon under a safety car has almost no initial bite, drivers compensate by applying more pedal pressure, and when the discs do come in the lock up is instantaneous.

That set up a final restart with Verstappen directly behind and everything to play for. Russell came under immense pressure over the closing laps and crossed the line barely a tenth clear, denying the Dutchman what would have been his first win of the season. The genuinely significant detail is that Verstappen finished two tenths adrift despite a power unit disadvantage, which The Race identified as evidence of real progress at Red Bull and their strongest weekend of the year on pace. Hadjar completed a double Red Bull podium in third, a remarkable return given he had missed the previous three races with a wrist injury.

For McLaren it was a disaster dressed up as an opportunity. Piastri started third in a heavily upgraded car and finished thirteenth, thirty six seconds off the winner, with Norris eliminated entirely. Bringing a major package to a circuit that rewards efficiency and leaving with a single classified car outside the points is the sort of weekend that reshapes a run in. Behind the leaders, Charles Leclerc took fourth and Lewis Hamilton sixth for Ferrari, split by Antonelli.

Which brings us to the championship. Antonelli recovered from sixteenth to fifth, finishing 15.512 seconds behind the winner, which on any normal afternoon would count as an excellent salvage job. Against a team mate who won the race it still costs fifteen points. Russell went into Baku 81 points adrift. He leaves it considerably closer, and with the clear knowledge that when this Mercedes is hooked up, nobody on the grid can live with it.

Race Standings

One line tells the story and it is the flattest on the chart. Russell’s cyan trace sits pinned to P1 from lap one to lap 51 without a single interruption, which for a street circuit with two safety cars and six retirements is a remarkable piece of control. He led every lap. The chart cannot convey that he won by 0.196 seconds, which is worth remembering whenever a flat leader line tempts you to call a race processional.

The most dramatic feature is Piastri’s orange line. It starts second, slides gently through the opening twenty laps as the Red Bulls work past, then collapses almost vertically around lap 39 from roughly eighth to fifteenth. That is a race ending in all but classification, and it is the visual record of McLaren’s weekend falling apart with a heavily upgraded car.

The cluster of chaos between laps 30 and 36 is where the race was reshaped. Colapinto’s pink line terminates at 36, and the simultaneous vertical scatter around it marks Gasly and Norris being collected in the same incident.

Antonelli’s teal line is the quiet achievement: a steady, unbroken climb from sixteenth to fifth with no spikes, which is exactly what a disciplined recovery drive looks like in data.

Tyre Strategy

The defining feature is a near vertical wall of stops between laps 30 and 32. Almost the entire field pitted inside a three lap window, and no strategist plans that. Albon’s row terminating at lap 30 identifies the cause: his crash brought out the safety car and handed everyone a discounted stop at precisely the moment the one stop window was opening anyway. The strategic race was effectively cancelled.

Within that, there is a genuine compound split worth reading. Russell and Verstappen ran Medium then Soft, while Hadjar, Leclerc, Hamilton and Piastri ran Soft then Medium. The Medium to Soft runners finished first and second, which suggests the fresher, grippier rubber in the closing stint was worth more at Baku than track position built early, though Verstappen closing to two tenths on the same plan as the winner complicates that reading.

The standout row is Russell’s. Both his stints, the Medium to lap 31 and the Soft to the flag, are dotted, meaning used sets throughout. He took pole on a seven lap Soft and then won the Grand Prix without fitting a single new tyre. Mercedes had spent their allocation on Friday and simply did not need it back.

Sainz was the only front half runner to stop early, at lap 20, and gained nothing for it.

Pit Times

A mean of 19.09 seconds makes this one of the cheapest pit lanes of the season, which is counterintuitive given Baku’s six kilometre lap but entirely consistent with a short, straight lane and a low delta. Audi head the chart at 17.77 seconds, a genuinely excellent number from a team whose cars had both been eliminated in Q1 the day before. Crews do not stop working when the car stops delivering.

The figures that matter sit second and third. Red Bull at 18.25 and Mercedes at 18.29 are separated by four hundredths, and given Verstappen finished 0.196 seconds behind Russell after 51 laps, that near parity in the pit lane is not a footnote. Had either crew dropped half a second, the result flips. Both teams executed under pressure with a race win live.

McLaren’s 18.83 is respectable and entirely beside the point given how their afternoon ended. Ferrari at 19.06 and Williams at 19.37 straddle the mean without drama.

Alpine’s 20.73 and VCARB’s 20.87 prop up the chart, and both reflect broken races rather than incompetent crews. Alpine lost both cars to Colapinto’s crash, while VCARB serviced Lawson three times in a race that ended with him collected in a separate incident. Averages punish teams whose races fall apart.

The Circuit

Baku is the circuit that shouldn’t work. Six kilometres of Azerbaijani street furniture, twenty corners, most of them right angles, a section so narrow you could touch both walls with a broom handle, and then a two kilometre straight bolted onto the end like an afterthought. On paper it’s a mess. In practice it has produced more genuinely chaotic racing than anything else on the calendar since it arrived in 2016.

The Baku City Circuit always produces fiery fights, largely due to the track’s enormous straight. Between Turns 16 and 1, drivers can put their foot down and go flat out for 2.2km. It’s a street circuit, like Monaco, that isn’t anything like Monaco. At 6.003km it’s one of the longest on the calendar, running anti clockwise across twenty corners, and despite the usual street circuit limitations, overtaking is very possible here.

Two things to note before we walk it. First, the calendar quirk: to avoid a clash with Azerbaijan’s day of remembrance on Sunday 27 September, the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix runs from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 September. A Saturday race. Everything shifts forward a day, the usual rhythm goes out of the window, and the teams get one fewer overnight to react to whatever Friday throws up.

Second, and far more interesting for the engineers: Baku has always presented the single hardest set up compromise of the season, and 2026 changes it fundamentally.

The set up war, and how active aero rewrites it

The classic Baku dilemma, as McLaren themselves put it, is whether to exploit the long straight and accept you’ll lose out in many of the corners, or focus on the corners and just try to tread water between Turns 16 and 1.

For a decade that’s been a genuine, painful choice. Trim the wing for the straight and you’re a passenger through the castle section. Load it up for the corners and you’re a sitting duck for 2.2 kilometres. Teams have historically split the difference and been unhappy about it.

Active aero doesn’t eliminate that compromise, but it softens it more here than anywhere else on the calendar. You run a higher base downforce level for the twisty middle sector, then flatten the wings in Straight Mode for the run down the shoreline. You get closer to having both. The cars most likely to look strong in Baku this year are the ones whose active aero system delivers the biggest delta between Corner Mode and Straight Mode, because that delta is worth more here, over a longer distance, than anywhere except Monza.

The energy picture is genuinely unusual too, and it cuts both ways. Twenty corners, most of them 90 degree stops, means harvesting opportunity in abundance. You are constantly braking, constantly recovering, and the battery fills quickly through the middle of the lap. That’s the Hungary end of the spectrum. But then you arrive at Turn 16 and face a 2.2 kilometre demand for continuous deployment, which is the longest single spend on the calendar. That’s the Monza end.

So Baku is the only circuit that does both. You harvest like a street track and you spend like a power track. The consequence is that clipping, if it happens, happens in precisely one place: the final third of the run to Turn 1, at 350kph, on the piece of road where every overtake in the race is decided. Run dry there and you don’t just lose lap time, you lose the position and probably two more behind it.

Sector 1: the street section, Turns 1 to 5

You arrive at Turn 1 having been flat out since the exit of Turn 16, which means the braking zone at the start finish line is the highest energy stop of the year. Turn 1 is a tight left hander, ninety degrees or thereabouts, approached at over 350kph with a wall on the exit and a queue of cars behind you.

It’s the primary overtaking corner and it’s spectacular precisely because the approach is so long. Cars run three abreast into Turn 1 here, and the action often looks more IndyCar than Formula 1. That’s not hyperbole. The tow down the shoreline is enormous, the braking zone is wide, and drivers arrive with wildly different amounts of momentum depending on where they picked up the slipstream.

With the 2026 cars, the arithmetic improves again. Lighter by 30kg means shorter braking distances, narrower by 100mm means genuinely three wide is comfortable rather than heroic, and the Overtake Mode boost, deployed at the driver’s discretion rather than in a fixed zone, gives the attacker control over exactly when to make the move.

Out of Turn 1 the track flicks right through Turn 2 and then it’s a short run to Turn 3, another ninety degree left and the second heaviest stop of the lap. Turn 3 is an underrated overtaking spot, particularly for anyone who was rebuffed at Turn 1 and has a second bite while their rival is still gathering the car up.

Turns 4 and 5 then take you away from the waterfront and up into the city proper, a pair of medium speed corners that start the climb towards the old town. The gradient here is easy to miss on television and matters a lot for traction: you’re going uphill on the exits, on a low grip street surface, with a 2026 power unit pushing serious torque through the rears.

The tyre story in this sector is traction and rear temperature. Baku has historically been a low degradation circuit, with a smooth surface and corners that don’t load the tyre laterally for long, and the problem has usually been getting heat into the rubber rather than keeping it out. That changes the moment you have a mandatory two stop. Teams accustomed to stretching a set here now have to plan around three compounds and two visits to the pit lane, and on a circuit where the safety car has appeared in the overwhelming majority of races, the strategic permutations become genuinely wild.

Sector 2: Turns 6 to 15

This is the old town, and it’s the reason Baku is a proper driver’s circuit rather than a drag strip with corners.

The track loops around into the city’s narrow, winding Icheri Sheher old town, dramatically wending past Baku’s medieval city walls, and there’s a snug little section spanning just 7.6 metres wall to wall, requiring the levels of precision you’d expect from a street circuit.

Seven point six metres. For context, a 2025 Formula 1 car was two metres wide. You are threading a car through a gap barely three and a half times your own width, uphill, blind, with medieval stonework on both sides and absolutely no run off. Turn 8 in particular is the one that gets the attention, a tight left where the wall closes in and where more than one driver has clipped a rear wheel and had their weekend ended on the spot.

Here, finally, the 2026 regulations hand the drivers a gift. Take 100mm off the width of the car and the castle section becomes measurably less terrifying. It’s still tight, still blind and still unforgiving, but the margin for error is meaningfully larger than it has been at any point since the circuit opened. I’d expect fewer weekend ending contacts and slightly more commitment through the narrowest part of the lap.

Out of the castle section the track winds back down through a series of 90 degree corners, Turns 9 through 15, which is the most monotonous looking and most deceptively difficult part of the circuit. There is no rhythm to be found here. Every corner is a separate problem: brake, turn, get the power down, avoid the wall, repeat. The walls are close enough throughout that the penalty for a half metre error is a broken suspension.

What matters through here, from the pit wall, is two things. Brake temperature, because a sequence of low speed 90 degree stops with no long straights to cool them is precisely the recipe for brake trouble, and Baku has cooked more than one set over the years. And harvesting, because this is where you fill the battery for the run home. The engineers will be running aggressive recovery through the middle sector so the drivers arrive at Turn 16 with a full store and the confidence to spend all of it.

Track familiarity counts for something here, unlike at a permanent circuit everyone knows by heart. The castle section is the sort of place where confidence is built lap by lap, and a driver who has three or four Baku weekends behind him will commit to Turn 8 in a way a rookie simply won’t in FP1.

Sector 3: Turns 16 to 20

And then the long one.

Turn 16 is the corner that matters most on the entire circuit, and hardly anyone talks about it. It’s a fast left hander onto the start of the 2.2 kilometre run, and everything that happens for the next twenty odd seconds is determined by how cleanly you exit it. Get it right and you carry speed into the tow, you’re a threat into Turn 1, and you have a defence if someone is behind you. Get it wrong and you’ve handed away a position before you’ve even reached the straight.

The remaining corners, Turns 17 through 20, are gentle kinks along the seafront boulevard rather than corners in any meaningful sense, taken flat as the cars build towards over 350kph. These are the fastest sustained speeds of the season, achieved on a public road with walls either side, which is a thought worth sitting with.

This is where the 2026 regulations have the most to prove. Straight Mode will be live here, flattening the wings for the full run, and Overtake Mode sits on top of it for anyone within a second at the detection point. On paper that’s a devastating combination, and the passing into Turn 1 should be better than ever.

The risk is clipping. Two point two kilometres is a very long time to sustain full electrical deployment, and if the battery empties with four hundred metres still to run, the defending car simply sails away while the attacker watches the trace go flat. The teams who have modelled this properly will hold a little back, deploy later, and arrive with the punch intact. The ones who haven’t will look quick for a kilometre and a half and then get embarrassed.

There’s also the pit entry to consider, which sits adjacent to the main straight and which Nico Rosberg once described as one of the places he always found the most dangerous of the whole year. With cars at 350kph and a mandatory two stop putting far more traffic through that entry than Baku has historically seen, it’s worth keeping an eye on.

What decides Sunday

Yes, Saturday. Get used to it.

The safety car, first and foremost. Baku’s walls have produced a caution in the overwhelming majority of its races, and with a mandatory two stop in play, a well timed safety car is worth more here than at any other circuit on the calendar. The team that reacts fastest to a yellow flag wins the race, and I’d be astonished if the winner on Saturday hasn’t benefited from one.

Energy discipline down the main straight, second. This is the longest continuous deployment demand of the season and the one place where getting it wrong is instantly, publicly punished.

And the exit of Turn 16, third, which is the most valuable half second on the whole circuit and the corner nobody ever puts on a poster.

Leclerc’s 1:43.009 from 2019 remains the race lap record and it’s safe for another year, because these cars have less downforce and a power unit that can’t sustain the same top end push. But a Baku where the castle section is fractionally less claustrophobic, where active aero softens the oldest set up compromise in the sport, and where the run to Turn 1 becomes a genuine energy gamble is a Baku with more variables than ever. Given what this place produces when everything is straightforward, that ought to be quite a Saturday afternoon.

Qualifying

Madrid’s first Formula 1 qualifying delivered exactly the tight, unpredictable session the new layout promised, and it produced a genuinely surprising pole. McLaren had not topped a single practice session all weekend, Norris had suffered a gearbox problem in FP2, and he arrived in Q3 having been fifth in Q1 and seventh in Q2. He then found the better part of a second between those sessions and put a 1:31.824 on the board with the clock running out, his nineteenth career pole, his third of 2026, and his third in the last four rounds. He described it as probably the best lap of his career, and given the circumstances that is not hyperbole. Antonelli, who had topped both FP2 and FP3 and gone into the session as favourite, had to settle for 0.011 seconds adrift and admitted afterwards he thought he had it. Verstappen was third, having lost time at the final corner on his opening run and again in the final sector at the death. Hamilton had led after the first Q3 runs with a 1:32.079, recovering impressively from an FP3 crash, but lost time in sector one on his final effort and slipped to fourth ahead of Leclerc. Russell’s sixth was the weekend’s most instructive failure: his tyres overheated on his final lap, which at a circuit with 22 corners packed into 5.4 kilometres and almost no straight to cool on is the defining engineering challenge here. Piastri was seventh, half a second down on his team mate. No home heroics either, with Sainz out in Q1 by five thousandths and Alonso alongside him.

Three drivers, three different sector bests, and 0.140 seconds covering the lot. Norris owns sector one at 28.226, Verstappen sector two at 32.730, and Antonelli sector three at 30.521. Stitch those together and the ideal lap is a 1:31.477, roughly three and a half tenths quicker than the pole time anyone actually managed, which at a circuit nobody had raced on before is about what you would expect. The speed trace tells you where each advantage comes from. Norris builds his opening sector time on outright straight line speed, the orange line peaking around 333 km/h at the 1,150 metre mark against roughly 327 for Antonelli, a six km/h edge that suggests McLaren committed to a lower drag configuration than Mercedes. Verstappen’s middle sector is the most visually obvious on the chart: from about 2,900 to 3,200 metres the blue line sits a clear ten km/h above both rivals through the fast flowing section, and he repeats the trick around 3,500 to 3,700. That is a Red Bull working well in the medium speed stuff. Antonelli’s final sector advantage is harder to read off the speed channel because the margins are smaller, which is itself the point: he is not faster anywhere dramatic, he is simply tidier through the sequence of slow corners either side of the deep braking event at 4,700 metres, where all three drop to around 85 km/h, the slowest point of the lap. The throttle traces are largely indistinguishable, with no visible correction from any of the three.

Race Summary and Analysis

Lando Norris arrived at the first corner of the inaugural Madring race having produced what he described as the best qualifying lap of his career, and he left Madrid third. That sentence contains the whole afternoon. He was not beaten on pace, nor on racecraft, but on the timing of a single pit stop. Kimi Antonelli took his eighth win of the season, becoming the first Formula 1 winner at a 5.4 kilometre street circuit built around 22 corners and the half kilometre banked sweep of Turn 12, and he did it without ever needing to do anything especially remarkable. Verstappen finished second, 4.351 seconds adrift, with Norris a further 0.738s back after a final stint that deserved more.

The opening phase was defined by drivers hunting for the edges of a circuit nobody had raced on. Antonelli exceeded track limits twice and was required to hand the position back to Norris on both occasions. Verstappen did likewise and was ordered to concede to Hamilton, but because he ceded the place while carrying compromised momentum he dropped two positions rather than one, letting Antonelli through as well. That asymmetry is the engineering reality of a new street layout: the walls define the outside, but the banking and the painted limits do not always agree with where the fastest line wants to go, and the cost of an exploratory lap is far higher than the gain.

Ferrari’s afternoon then unravelled. Hamilton lost his brakes entirely and retired the car, which at this circuit is a predictable failure mode rather than bad luck. Twenty two corners in 5.4 kilometres means a relentless brake duty cycle with almost no straight line running to force cooling air through the ducts, and the enclosed, wall lined sections make matters worse by disturbing the flow the ducts rely on. Any team that had sized its cooling apertures for a conventional circuit was going to find out about it here.

The race turned when Stroll’s stoppage brought out the virtual safety car. Under VSC the entire field runs to a delta, which slashes the effective cost of a pit stop because the transit is no longer measured against rivals at full racing speed. Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell all took the opportunity and paid something close to nothing for it. Norris did not, coming in a lap later at full green flag price, and a slow stop compounded the error. He rejoined five places down. That single lap’s hesitation, more than anything else across 57 laps, decided the Grand Prix.

Leclerc provided the strategic counterpoint. Having stayed out to lead the race on a long opening stint, he held the gap to Antonelli steadily rather than surrendering it, which is the whole requirement of a one stop: you do not need to be faster, you need to lose time slowly enough that the pit delta never catches you. He finally came in on lap 49 and emerged with fresh Softs, using them to hold off Russell by 0.713 seconds at the flag. Russell’s two stop, by contrast, left him almost thirty seconds behind his own team mate, which is a fairly damning verdict on the extra stop at this venue. Further back, Piastri attempted an undercut on Lawson and found traffic on his out lap, losing two seconds to the Red Bull rather than gaining any. An undercut is only ever as good as the clear air waiting at the end of the pit exit.

Leclerc’s late stop turned the final nine laps into a three way fight for the podium, though in practice it was a two way one. Antonelli was comfortable enough at the front; the real contest was Norris hunting Verstappen. He closed to within a second with Overtake Mode available, then a lock up interrupted the pursuit and cost him the momentum he had spent several laps building. Backmarkers brought the pair together again on the penultimate lap, and Norris reported that Verstappen had left the circuit and gained an advantage on lap 56. The incident was noted, but no further action followed, and Verstappen kept second by seven tenths.

For the championship, the result reads exactly as the season has been reading. Antonelli extends a lead that was already substantial, Russell’s fifth does nothing to close it, and Norris continues to demonstrate genuine race winning speed while collecting rather less than that speed deserves. Madrid’s first Grand Prix was decided by a lap of hesitation in the pit window, which is a very modern way to lose a motor race.

Summary of the Track

Four. That is how many on track overtakes the Madring produced across 57 laps, once you discount the opening lap shuffle. Monaco, a circuit universally derided as a narrow and impossible procession, managed ten this year, while the pre Madrid season average stood at 61 passes per race, with China delivering 101, Miami 88 and Monza 78. That represents roughly a 94 per cent collapse against the season norm, and it is a genuinely damning figure because Monaco has an excuse that Madrid simply does not. Monte Carlo is a set of public roads squeezed between a harbour and a hillside, laid out in 1929, and nobody has ever pretended it was designed for modern racing. The Madring was drawn on a blank sheet of paper in the 2020s by people who had every piece of aerodynamic and regulatory data available to them, and it still produced less wheel to wheel action than a ninety seven year old street circuit.

The engineering requirements for overtaking are not mysterious: you need a slow corner feeding a long acceleration zone, followed by a heavy braking event with sufficient width for two lines and a run off that punishes error without ending races. Madrid has 22 corners packed into 5.414 kilometres, an average spacing of under 250 metres, which leaves no sustained deployment phase for cars that now route half their power through the MGU K and desperately need a straight to use it. Antonelli, who won the thing, put it plainly: attempting a move risks contact 80 per cent of the time, and Norris questioned how the design was approved at all, proposing the removal of Turns 18 and 19 to create a straight into a hairpin. Promoters are already planning changes in three areas for 2027. They should not have had to. When you are handed a clean sheet and a nine figure budget, producing a circuit that racing wise is worse than Monaco is not bad luck. It is a brief that was never properly written.

Reaction Times

The asterisk matters, so read the relative spread rather than the absolute figures. On that basis Hamilton had comfortably the best launch on the grid, 2.8 seconds to 100 km/h and a further 2.1 to 200, the lowest combined bar on the chart. That he then lost his brakes and retired on lap six is the sort of irony this sport specialises in.

The more interesting entry is Norris. From pole he managed only 3.0 to 100 and 2.3 to 200, which is a distinctly average getaway by the standards of this field, and yet he held the lead comfortably into the first corner. That tells you the run to Turn 1 at the Madring is short enough that grid slot outweighs launch quality, which is worth noting for future races here.

Antonelli and Russell both posted 3.0 and 2.2, Verstappen 3.1 and 2.2. Nothing separates the leading contenders meaningfully.

Colapinto’s 2.0 in the second phase is the standout number on the board, the best 100 to 200 km/h increment of anyone, and it fits with a driver who qualified ninth and then ran in the top eight for much of the afternoon. Bortoleto propped up the chart at 3.5 and 2.5.

Race Standings

The chart divides cleanly into three acts and one vertical catastrophe. Norris leads from lights out through to lap fifteen, entirely untroubled, which reinforces that he was never beaten on pace. Hamilton’s red line then falls off the bottom of the board around lap six, a near vertical drop from fourth to out that marks the brake failure.

The decisive moment is the scatter at laps fourteen and fifteen. That is not racing, it is the pit cycle following Stroll’s retirement, and you can read the consequence directly off the chart: Norris’s orange line drops from first to roughly fifth in the space of a lap while Leclerc’s red line climbs to the front. Five places, lost to timing.

Leclerc then holds P1 from lap sixteen through to around lap forty seven, a genuinely long stint at the front, before his stop drops him back and hands the lead to Antonelli for the final ten laps. The cyan line does not move again.

What the chart cannot show is how close the closing laps were. Verstappen and Norris finished 0.738 seconds apart after a fight that went to the penultimate lap, yet both lines run flat and parallel. Worth remembering that position charts hide the interesting bits.

Tyre Strategy

The dominant feature is a near vertical wall of stops at lap fourteen. Antonelli, Verstappen, Russell, Colapinto, Lindblad, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Albon, Alonso and Perez all came in together, which is the signature of a virtual safety car rather than ten independent strategic decisions. Norris’s row sits one lap later at fifteen, and given the pit chart shows a mean lane time of nearly thirty three seconds, that single lap of hesitation is the whole race.

Leclerc’s row is the genuine outlier and the most interesting call on the board. He started on the Hard and ran it for forty eight laps, an enormous opening stint, before switching to Softs for the final nine. The logic of a long one stop is that you never need to be quicker than the cars behind, only slow enough in your losses that the pit delta cannot catch you, and at a circuit this expensive to visit the sums work. It also handed him fresh rubber precisely when everyone else was managing forty lap Hards, which is how he held Russell off at the flag.

Verstappen and Hamilton were the only front runners to start on used Softs, chasing launch grip on a street layout. Russell’s two stop cost him roughly thirty seconds to his team mate, which at this venue was never going to pay.

Pit Times

A mean of 32.64 seconds makes this one of the most expensive pit lanes of the season, and that single number explains the entire race. Madrid’s lane is long, and when a green flag stop costs the better part of thirty three seconds, the discount available under a virtual safety car becomes enormous in absolute terms. Roughly halve that cost and you are looking at a swing of twelve to fifteen seconds between taking the window and missing it. That is not a strategic nuance, it is a pit stop and a half.

Which makes McLaren’s 33.19 seconds, above the mean and ninth of eleven, the most damning bar on the chart. Norris came in a lap after the VSC group and then had a slow stop on top of it, compounding a timing error with an execution one. Mercedes, by contrast, sit third at 31.11 and turned their cheap stop around cleanly, which is precisely what Antonelli needed.

Audi head the table at 30.96 with Red Bull and Ferrari close behind. At the other end, Williams at 36.27 and Aston Martin at 37.84 are five seconds clear of the field, and both figures reflect broken races rather than incompetent crews. Stroll’s retirement triggered the VSC in the first place, and Sainz ran three stops before parking it.

The Circuit

A brand new Formula 1 circuit is a rare thing. A brand new circuit in a major European capital, designed from scratch rather than bolted onto existing streets, is close to unheard of. On the weekend of 11 to 13 September 2026 the Spanish Grand Prix will be run for the first time at the Madring, a 5.4-kilometre, 22-corner hybrid circuit threaded through the IFEMA exhibition grounds and the Valdebebas district on the north-east edge of Madrid, five minutes from Barajas airport. It marks Formula One’s return to the Spanish capital after an absence of some 45 years.

Here’s the thing that ought to interest you most, and it’s a name rather than a number. The architect is Jarno Zaffelli, the same man whose company redesigned Zandvoort and gave us the banking at Hugenholtz and Arie Luyendyk. We said goodbye to his Dutch work three weeks ago. Now we get his most ambitious project yet, and the fingerprints are all over it.

The Madring is a hybrid layout: tight, street-style corners around the exhibition halls give way through two short tunnels to a fast permanent section carrying the layout’s elevation and its banked centrepiece, La Monumental. It’s 12 metres wide throughout except for the main straight and the first bend, which are 15 metres. The highest point of the lap sits at 697 metres, and there are notable elevation changes throughout.

Nobody has raced here. There is no historical data, no simulator model validated against real running, no tyre degradation reference and no idea how the surface will behave once twenty-two Formula 1 cars have rubbered it in. Track familiarity, which has been worth almost nothing at Monza and Silverstone because everyone has it, is suddenly the most valuable commodity of the weekend precisely because nobody does. Friday morning at the Madring will be the most genuinely informative practice session of the season.

Sector 1: the street section, Turns 1 to 11

The lap opens with a left-right chicane at the end of a 589-metre start-finish straight, where the 2026 cars are expected to slow from 320km/h to 100km/h. That is a monstrous braking event, comparable in scale to Monza’s Rettifilo, and on a 15-metre-wide entry it’s clearly been designed as the primary overtaking zone. Wide entry, heavy stop, tight chicane. Zaffelli knows exactly what he’s doing.

That’s followed by a fast, open right-hander called Hortaleza, named after the Madrid neighbourhood behind it, which leads onto a long run through the urban section to Turn 4, where cars are predicted to hit 340km/h. That’s the fastest point on the circuit and it comes barely a quarter of the way round the lap, which tells you this is not a conventional street layout. Most street circuits build to their top speed. This one gets there early and then makes you work.

Another tight sequence follows at Turns 5 and 6, including an 8 percent gradient climb of around 10 metres off the second of those corners, before the complex Bunker section. Uphill exits out of slow corners are a traction problem at the best of times, and with the torque a 2026 power unit puts down off a second-gear apex, this is where the rear tyres will start complaining. Madrid in mid-September is still warm, the surface will be green early in the weekend, and the combination of a fresh, low-grip circuit and uphill traction demands is a recipe for wheelspin and thermal degradation on the rears.

The Bunker section then threads between the exhibition pavilions, tight and enclosed with concrete on both sides. This is proper street-circuit driving, and on a 12-metre width there is precisely no room for error. The 2026 cars, 100mm narrower than their predecessors, will be grateful for every millimetre of that reduction.

Sector 2: La Monumental, Turns 12 to 17

This is the reason everyone is talking about Madrid, and it deserves the attention.

Turn 12 carves a 270-degree right-handed loop through 547 metres, making it the longest corner in Formula 1. It has 13.5 degrees of banking, which equates to a 24 percent incline. It’s 12 metres wide at its fattest. And the exit is blind, over a crest. It’s the maximum permitted under current track design regulations and the steepest corner anywhere on the 2026 calendar, rising up to 10 metres through its span. Unlike a uniform oval-style banking, La Monumental changes through elevation and camber as it progresses, opening progressively before finishing with a blind, uphill exit. Drivers face over 4G through it, for roughly six seconds at a stretch, in front of around 45,000 spectators.

Carlos Sainz, the race ambassador and a man who has actually walked it, put it best. “Not only banked, it’s also blind. You’ve created quite a cocktail.”

Now, the engineering. Sustained banking loads a tyre vertically rather than laterally, which means the contact patch is pressed into the road and the vertical load rises well above static. Six seconds of that, at over 4G, is a duration no other corner on the calendar imposes. Pirelli will run higher pressures to cope, as they historically have at Zandvoort, and the tyre construction will be a genuine unknown until Friday. Watch the left-hand side of the car in particular: a 270-degree right-hander of this length punishes the left-front and left-rear relentlessly, and the recovery time before the next corner is short.

There was a real fear that the 2026 regulations would ruin it. One of the concerns was that being so high-speed, La Monumental could be spoiled by super clipping, where cars run at full throttle but engine power is diverted to charge the batteries. A close look at the layout has highlighted that the tight sequence of corners before La Monumental, which includes a new medium-speed chicane, are going to be perfect for ensuring that cars arrive at the banked corner entry full of power. Drivers should be able to deploy quite a bit of energy and run at full beans all the way through the 550-metre section.

That is a genuinely clever piece of circuit design and worth pausing on, because it’s the first time we’ve seen a track laid out with the 2026 energy regulations explicitly in mind. Zaffelli has put the harvesting where it’s needed so the spectacle survives. Compare that with Monza, an accident of 1922 that the new rules have quietly strangled, and you can see the difference a century of hindsight makes.

Sainz has suggested the corner could be taken completely flat out by the fastest cars, creating a genuine slipstream and overtaking opportunity into what follows. That’s the Zandvoort principle exactly: banking keeps a following car close through a corner where a flat turn would break the tow, and the exit becomes an attacking position. The purpose-built esses at Turns 16 and 17 then flow away from the banking, fast and open, in the permanent section of the circuit.

Sector 3: the Park section, Turns 18 to 22

The lap closes through what the designers call the Park section, a slower, twistier run between the pavilions and down towards the final corner. The track goes into a more typical, twisty street course sector in between the various pavilions down to the final corner of Turn 22, which is named The Park after the adjacent Juan Carlos I Park.

This is where a 22-corner lap starts to feel long. After the drama of La Monumental and the flow of the esses, the closing sequence asks for patience and precision rather than bravery, and it’s the section where drivers will lose time simply through unfamiliarity. On a circuit nobody has driven, the fiddly bits are where the mistakes live.

There’s also the 837-metre Ribera del Sena straight in this part of the lap, which is a serious stretch of road and almost certainly a Straight Mode zone with an overtaking opportunity at the end of it. Combined with the 589-metre main straight and the run to Turn 4, that gives the Madring at least three places where a pass is plausible, which is more than most street circuits manage and considerably more than Monaco or the Hungaroring.

The final corner matters enormously, as it always does. Turn 22 feeds directly onto the main straight and the 15-metre-wide braking zone at Turn 1, so a clean exit here is worth a position on Sunday. Same equation as Zandvoort’s banking, same equation as Monaco’s Noghes. Get the last corner right and you’re a threat. Get it wrong and you’re defending.

What decides Sunday

Learning, first and foremost. Nobody has raced here and the team that extracts the most from Friday will have an advantage they cannot buy back later in the weekend. Watch which drivers build up quickly and which ones spend FP1 finding the walls.

Tyre management on an unknown surface, second. A green circuit with an uphill traction section, a six-second banked corner and September heat in Madrid is a combination Pirelli have modelled but nobody has validated. The degradation numbers on Friday will be the most closely guarded data of the weekend.

And La Monumental, third, because everything about this circuit’s identity rests on whether a 550-metre banked corner produces the racing the designers have promised. The energy modelling suggests it will. The Zandvoort precedent suggests banking creates overtaking rather than preventing it. And a 12-metre-wide, 270-degree loop with a blind exit taken flat at over 4G is, whatever else you think about new circuits, a genuinely thrilling thing to have built.

Formula 1 has spent twenty years adding street circuits that all drive like each other. This one doesn’t drive like anything. That alone earns it a fair hearing.

Qualifying

Saturday had already delivered the shock of the season. Pierre Gasly took the first pole position of his career, putting an Alpine on the front of the grid at the Temple of Speed, and it happened because Alpine read Monza correctly while the established quartet did not. The 2026 cars arrive here energy-starved in a way the previous generation never was: with 80 per cent of the lap spent at full throttle and precious few heavy braking events to harvest under, the MGU-K simply cannot replenish the store fast enough to sustain deployment down straights of this length. That turns Monza into a drag-versus-deployment optimisation problem rather than a straightforward downforce trade, and Alpine solved it better than anyone. Behind Gasly, the more consequential grid slot belonged to Kimi Antonelli, who lined up nineteenth after taking a back-of-grid penalty for a planned engine change. On a circuit where the slipstream makes overtaking genuinely achievable, that was a recoverable position rather than a terminal one, but nobody in the Mercedes garage would have predicted what followed.

The sector splits explain Gasly’s pole more completely than the headline time does. He owns sector one at 26.817, Russell takes sector two at 27.596 and sector three at 27.244, and the arithmetic is neat: Gasly’s 0.189s advantage in the opening sector outweighs Russell’s combined 0.129s across the other two, leaving exactly the 0.060s that separated them. Add the three bests together and the ideal lap is a 1:21.657, roughly thirteen hundredths quicker than anything actually set.

The more revealing numbers are the trap speeds. Russell recorded 343 km/h, Gasly 342, and Piastri just 331. That twelve km/h deficit is not a power difference, it is a wing choice, and it is the clearest evidence of McLaren getting the Monza compromise wrong. The logic of running more downforce is that you recover the straight-line loss through the corners, but Piastri is slower than Russell in every sector including the third, where his extra load should have paid. He carried the drag penalty and banked nothing for it.

Alpine, meanwhile, went the other way and made it work, dominating the map through the opening sector and the fast run beyond it while conceding the middle and final thirds. In an energy-limited formula at a circuit that is 80 per cent full throttle, that is exactly the right side of the trade to land on.

The speed traces are near-identical for the opening kilometre, which itself tells you something: Gasly’s Alpine matched a works Mercedes to within a single km/h at the trap. Piastri’s orange line sits visibly lower from around 400 metres onward, and never recovers that ground.

The section that demands attention sits between roughly 2,000 and 2,300 metres, at the Variante della Roggia. Russell and Piastri both come off the throttle and drop towards 110 km/h at the same point, while Gasly’s pink trace holds full throttle and around 307 km/h for a noticeably longer distance before dropping. An offset of that magnitude is too large to be a simple braking-point difference at a second-gear chicane, so it is most likely either a genuinely different line through the complex or a distance-alignment artefact in the pink channel. Worth checking against the onboard before treating it as a driving observation.

Where the trace is unambiguous is the final sector. From about 4,200 metres to 5,000, both Russell and Piastri run consistently above Gasly through the Lesmo-to-Parabolica phase, which is precisely where Alpine’s low-drag package stops helping and starts costing. Gasly banked his pole in the first third and then spent the rest of the lap defending it.

Race Summary and Analysis

Ferrari’s home race lasted precisely two laps, and they wrecked it themselves. Leclerc and Hamilton went at each other through the opening corners with the sort of commitment you reserve for a rival rather than a team-mate, and at the exit of the chicane Leclerc simply refused to yield the road. Hamilton was pushed onto the gravel and dropped to tenth in a single move. Leclerc admitted afterwards that the pair of them went too far, which is an honest assessment and a damning one, because two cars carrying the hopes of a home crowd compromised each other before either had settled into the race. Hamilton’s post-race complaint about a lack of rules at Ferrari cuts to the actual engineering and management failure here: without a clearly defined and pre-agreed protocol for intra-team racing, two drivers with identical machinery will resolve it on the circuit, and at Monza that resolution costs positions neither can recover.

It got worse almost immediately. Leclerc, having been passed by Verstappen and with Piastri lining him up, lost the car at Parabolica at the end of lap two and hit the tyre barrier hard. He was thankfully unhurt, but the impact was heavy enough to bring out the red flag and end Ferrari’s afternoon at fifty per cent capacity before the race had properly begun. Parabolica is unforgiving in these cars for a specific reason: it is a long, loaded right-hander taken at high speed where the rear axle is asked to sustain lateral load for an extended period, and a car already unsettled from defending, running in disturbed air with its energy store depleted from the preceding straight, has very little margin. Ferrari left Monza with a sixth place from Hamilton and a wrecked chassis, which for the Scuderia at their own event is about as bleak as it gets.

The red flag reset everything, and the restart is where the race properly began. Antonelli had already demonstrated the better launch once, taking second from Russell off the original start, and he repeated the trick at the restart to take the lead from Norris. Standing starts on a drying surface are a specific engineering problem: the clutch bite point has to be set for a grip level nobody can measure accurately, tyre surface temperature is uneven after a period behind the barriers, and the difference between a good getaway and a wheelspin limited one is measured in tens of milliseconds of clutch release. Mercedes clearly had that mapping right, twice. Antonelli then stretched out a lead and for a substantial portion of the race looked like the man to beat. The interesting question is why that evaporated. His pace slipped in the final third while Norris’s did not, and given both were managing the same drying, evolving surface, the likeliest explanation is tyre state rather than raw car performance: Antonelli having used more of his rubber building the early gap, and then having nothing left when it mattered.

The race was then decided by a single strategic call. Stroll’s retirement triggered a virtual safety car, and the Mercedes pit wall split their cars: Antonelli pitted, as did Verstappen, while Russell stayed out. Under VSC conditions the entire field runs to a delta, which slashes the effective cost of a stop because the pit lane transit is no longer measured against rivals at racing speed. Taking the stop was the percentage call, and Russell declining it was the gamble. It handed him the lead on the road but committed him to defending it on tyres that were already well used against a team-mate on fresh rubber. That is a losing position at Monza. The tow that makes overtaking possible here works equally well for the attacker whatever their tyre state, and once Antonelli had cleared the intervening cars there was only ever going to be one outcome. Russell nursed the rubber home for second, 3.857 seconds adrift, which given the circumstances was a decent salvage job rather than a failure.

Antonelli’s win from nineteenth places him joint second in the all-time list for the lowest grid position from which a grand prix has been won, and he did it at his home race in front of a crowd that had come expecting to watch Ferrari. Verstappen completed the podium at 14.718 seconds, with Norris and Piastri fourth and fifth for McLaren, split by two tenths, and Hamilton sixth after his recovery from the first-lap gravel excursion. Gasly converted his historic pole into seventh, which will feel like a disappointment on the timing screens but represents a genuine engineering achievement for Alpine across the weekend. Tsunoda took his first point of his stand-in spell in tenth and kept it, despite causing an extra formation lap, with Audi lodging an appeal against the stewards’ decision not to apply the start-procedure regulations. For the championship, the picture could hardly be better for Mercedes or worse for everyone chasing: their title leader took a back-of-grid engine penalty at a circuit of his choosing, and still won.

Reaction Times

Hulkenberg propped up the chart at 3.5, eight tenths adrift, which at Monza with a 1.1 km run to the first braking zone is a genuinely expensive way to start a race.

The second phase is where this gets interesting, because Monza rewards the 100 to 200 km/h increment more than almost any circuit. Russell, Verstappen, Lindblad and Perez all posted 2.1 there, the best on the board. Gasly, from pole, managed only 3.0 and then 2.7, which is a poor combined launch by any measure. That he held the lead into Turn 1 regardless says he defended the inside line properly rather than out-accelerated anyone.

Colapinto’s numbers are the oddest pairing: 2.8 to 100, among the quickest, then 3.2 to 200, the worst on the chart. That profile, a clean initial launch followed by a collapsed second phase, usually points to either an energy deployment problem or a driver who ran out of road and had to lift.

Race Standings

Two lines carry this entire chart. The first is Leclerc’s, which falls off the bottom within two laps and never returns, and the second is Antonelli’s, which climbs from nineteenth in the opening phase and does not stop climbing until it reaches the top. That combination, one home hero destroying his own race and the other constructing the drive of the season, is the whole story of Ferrari’s afternoon and Mercedes’.

Read the early laps carefully and the picture matches the timing: Gasly’s pink line holds P1 from lights out, the red flag resets everything at lap two, and Russell assumes the lead after the standing restart. The lead then alternates between the two Mercedes for the middle third, with Antonelli taking it at lap eighteen.

The cluster of vertical movement around laps 27 to 30 is the virtual safety car for Stroll’s retirement working through the field, and this is where the strategic split becomes visible. Antonelli and Verstappen drop back through the order while those staying out inherit position. The decisive crossing comes near lap 48, at the very top of the chart, where Antonelli reclaims the lead from his team-mate for good.

Alonso’s green line terminates around lap 23, Stroll’s at 27.

Tyre Strategy

This chart is dominated by a single vertical event at lap three, where almost every row shows a stint ending. That is the red flag, and it converted what should have been a strategic race into a largely processional one by giving the entire field a free tyre change before the tyres had done any meaningful work.

The consequence is stark. Russell, Norris, Piastri, Hamilton, Gasly, Lindblad and Colapinto all took a fresh set at the stoppage and then ran fifty laps to the flag without stopping again. Russell’s row is the most extreme: a full half-century of laps on one set of Hards, which explains both his second place and the description of him nursing the car home.

The deviations came at laps 27 and 28, and that cluster is the Stroll virtual safety car. Antonelli, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Ocon, Perez and Bottas all took the cheap stop. Antonelli went Medium to Medium, Verstappen Medium to Hard. That single decision decided the race: Antonelli surrendered track position for rubber that was twenty-five laps younger than Russell’s, and at a circuit where the slipstream makes attacking viable, the outcome was never really in doubt.

Lawson’s row is the outlier, stopping at lap twelve and then running forty-one laps on used Mediums.

Pit Times

The most important thing about this chart is what is missing from it. Only six teams appear, because only six teams made a green-flag pit stop all afternoon. The red flag at the end of lap two handed the entire field a free tyre change, and the majority simply took it and ran to the flag on a single set. Everything shown here is therefore a very small sample, and it should be read as such.

The mean of 26.86 seconds is high, which is Monza’s pit lane doing what it always does: a long lane with a substantial time penalty attached. Audi head the chart at 24.21s, Mercedes second at 24.75s, and that second figure matters more than its position suggests. Antonelli’s race hinged on a virtual safety car stop around lap 28, and with Russell staying out to lead on ageing rubber, every tenth of stationary time was a tenth Antonelli had to recover on track afterwards. The crew gave him a clean one.

Red Bull’s 27.88s covers Verstappen’s stop in the same window, a full three seconds slower than Mercedes managed, which cannot have helped his chances of joining the fight at the front. Cadillac’s 31.85s is five seconds above the mean and reads as a problem stop rather than a slow crew.

The Circuit

There is nowhere else like it. Monza is 5.793 kilometres of arrogance, a circuit that essentially refuses to acknowledge that cornering exists, laid out in a royal park in 1922 and barely apologised for since. Cars are on full throttle for 80 percent of the lap, and hit their maximum speed on the circuit’s 1.1km start-finish straight. From there they roar off into the historic park section, where a series of big stops into tight chicanes give the brakes a good workout. Eleven corners, 53 laps, and an average speed on a qualifying lap that no other venue comes close to.

Everyone in the paddock knows what Monza does to a conventional car. What nobody has properly experienced yet is what Monza does to a 2026 car. Because on paper, this is the hardest engineering problem of the entire season.

The energy problem, and why Monza is worse than it looks

You’ll remember the mess at Spa. Well, the numbers say Monza is very nearly its equal, and in one respect it’s actually more brutal.

Full-throttle time and theoretical energy recovery under braking, based on 2025 data: Spa runs 66 seconds of full throttle with 4.2MJ recoverable, Monza 60 seconds with just 3.3MJ. From that it emerges that Spa and Monza will be the most challenging tracks for energy management.

Look at those two numbers side by side and the problem announces itself. Spa asks for more full-throttle running, but it hands you 4.2MJ back through Les Combes, the Bus Stop and the rest. Monza asks for almost as much and gives you 3.3MJ. That’s the worst recovery-to-demand ratio on the calendar. You are spending nearly as much as at Spa with a quarter less income.

Monza’s power-limited distance is 4,218 metres, against Spa’s 4,594. Four kilometres of every lap where the car wants more power than the regulations or the battery will let it have.

And when the store runs dry the car doesn’t just plateau. The lower the recoverable energy, the more the battery must be recharged through alternative methods, such as the electric motor drawing power from the combustion engine on the straights, which further worsens clipping. That’s the vicious circle. You harvest off the engine on a straight, which means the engine is doing two jobs at once, which means less thrust, which means you’re slower on the very stretch of road where Monza decides everything.

Ferrari, at home, arrive with a car built around low drag and aerodynamic efficiency, which is exactly the right weapon for this fight. Whether the tifosi get what they want depends less on outright power and more on whose energy model is cleverest.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 3

You cross the line flat out, the fastest you’ll go all weekend, and then you have to stop. The Variante del Rettifilo, Turns 1 and 2, is the heaviest braking event on the calendar. Well over 340kph down to around 80kph for a tight right-left chicane, in a distance that never looks long enough on television.

It is, obviously, the great overtaking corner of the lap. It’s also a trap. The braking zone is so long and the entry so wide that three cars will occasionally arrive abreast, and the exit kerbs are aggressive enough that anyone who takes the shortcut gets launched. Half of Monza’s most famous moments have happened in this hundred metres. With the 2026 cars lighter by 30kg and shorter in the wheelbase, braking distances shorten and the car rotates more willingly through the second part of the chicane. Expect more successful moves and, on lap one, expect carnage.

Out of Rettifilo and into Curva Grande, Turn 3, a long right-hand sweep that has been flat for years and remains so. It’s not a challenge in a modern car so much as a very fast connection, but it matters enormously for energy because you’re at full throttle for a long time with nothing coming back.

Sector 2: Turns 4 to 7

hen the Variante della Roggia, Turns 4 and 5, a quick left-right chicane at the end of the run from Curva Grande. Second heavy braking zone, second genuine overtaking chance, and the corner where a driver who’s saved a slug of Overtake Mode boost can pull off a move that the car ahead never saw coming. The kerbs here are savage and the temptation to straight-line the chicane is permanent. Track limits will be a running theme all weekend.

The tyre story in this sector is all about the front axle under braking. Monza doesn’t load the tyres laterally the way Barcelona or Silverstone do, so the degradation profile is unusual: low overall wear, but heavy thermal and mechanical punishment to the fronts under repeated enormous stops, and a real risk of flat-spotting if you lock up defending into Rettifilo on cold rubber. A flat-spotted front at Monza means vibration through every one of those long straights, and it will cost you a pit stop.

The park section, and the only part of the lap where Monza pretends to be a normal race track.

Lesmo 1 and Lesmo 2, Turns 6 and 7, are a pair of quick, blind right-handers taken in sequence with a gravel trap on the outside of both. They are genuinely lovely corners and nobody talks about them because they’re bracketed by straights that get all the attention. Lesmo 1 is the faster and more open of the two, Lesmo 2 the tighter and more consequential, because the exit fires you down the Curva del Serraglio and under the old banking towards Ascari. Compromise the exit of Lesmo 2 and you bleed speed for the best part of a kilometre.

Here’s where the 2026 downforce cut starts to bite. Monza is run at the lowest downforce of the season, always has been, with wings trimmed to almost nothing in pursuit of straight-line speed. Take a 2026 car, which already has 15 to 30 percent less downforce available than its ground-effect predecessor, and trim it for Monza, and the Lesmos become genuinely edgy. Add a rear that’s light because the aero has been stripped away and a driver who’s committed at 250kph with gravel waiting, and you have the corner sequence that will separate the field in qualifying.

Sector 3: Turn 8 to the run home

Then the Variante Ascari, Turns 8, 9 and 10, the finest corner complex at Monza and one of the best anywhere. A left-right-left flick taken at high speed, demanding total commitment and a car that changes direction cleanly without unsettling itself. Get the first apex right and the rest flows. Get it wrong and you’re fighting the car all the way through, losing time you can’t recover on the long straight that follows. It’s also the third and final significant recovery point of the lap, which means the harvesting strategy through Ascari directly determines whether you have anything left for the Parabolica exit.

Track familiarity, incidentally, is absolute. Monza has been on the calendar since 1950, the junior series race here every year, and every driver on the grid could walk the lap from memory. Nobody finds time in learning this circuit. They find it in trim level, in braking confidence at Rettifilo, and in the deployment map.

Out of Ascari and down the back straight, the second-longest full-throttle stretch of the lap, to the Parabolica. Officially it’s Curva Alboreto now, and it deserves the name.

The Parabolica is a long, constant-radius right-hander that tightens as you go, entered at enormous speed and exited onto the pit straight. It is the single most important corner at Monza for lap time, because everything you carry out of it you keep for 1.1 kilometres. Two tenths lost here is two tenths gone, compounded by the longest straight on the calendar.

It’s also the corner where 2026 gets interesting in a way nobody has fully modelled. You want low downforce for the straights. You need downforce for the Parabolica. That tension has always existed at Monza, but with active aero the trade-off is now partly solvable: run Corner Mode through the Parabolica, snap to Straight Mode the instant you’re straight, and you get some of both. The timing of that transition, right on the exit of a corner where the car is still loaded and still turning, is a proper engineering challenge. Go early and the rear goes light while you’re still at an angle. Go late and you’ve given away speed at the trap.

Whichever team has the crispest actuation and the bravest calibration will find time here that looks inexplicable on the timing screens.

There’s a strategic layer too. If your battery is empty coming out of Ascari, you have no answer down the back straight and no answer out of the Parabolica, and at Monza that means you’re a moving chicane for the whole of the following lap. The drivers who look quick on Sunday will be the ones whose engineers have built a deployment map that keeps something in reserve for the two places where it’s worth the most.

What decides Sunday

Three things, and only one of them is the driver.

Energy management, above everything. This is the second-hardest circuit of the season for the 2026 power unit, with the worst recovery-to-demand ratio on the calendar, and whoever has solved that puzzle will make passes that look effortless.

Drag efficiency, which at Monza has always been king and which in 2026 is worth double, because low drag saves energy as well as buying speed. The teams who built genuinely efficient cars this winter get their reward here.

And the first braking zone, where a race can be won on lap one and lost on lap two. The Rettifilo is the best overtaking corner in Formula 1 and it takes prisoners every single year.

Lando Norris’ 1:20.901 from 2025 stands as the lap record. It’s not falling this year. But a Monza where the Lesmos are a challenge, the Parabolica is a proper corner again and the battery might run dry on the run to Ascari is a Monza worth every bit of the noise the tifosi will make. Sprint

George Russell led every one of the 24 laps at Zandvoort and won by 1.3 seconds, and the manner of it told you rather more about the circuit than about the driver. This was his third sprint victory of the season and the clearest evidence yet of a genuine post summer revival, but he never once enjoyed a cushion of more than about two seconds and he was never seriously threatened either. Both of those things were true simultaneously, which is the defining paradox of racing at Zandvoort. He had taken sprint pole on Friday with a 1:11.567, heading a top four covered by less than a tenth, and in a 24 lap dash at a circuit this narrow that Friday afternoon was effectively the race. Norris slotted in behind at the first corner and stayed there until his tyres cried off. Everybody else did much the same thing in their own little queue.

This is the flattest standings chart of the season and it is genuinely instructive. Twenty four laps, twenty two cars, and after the opening tour there is precisely one position change anywhere in the top ten. Russell’s cyan line sits pinned to P1 from flag to flag without a wobble. The single crossing on the board is Leclerc over Norris at around lap 17 to 18, and that was manufactured by compound choice rather than by racecraft. Everything else runs in perfect parallel.

The mechanism is Zandvoort’s dirty air problem, and it is worth being precise about it. The lap is near continuous cornering with two banked sections and one meaningful braking zone at Tarzan. A following car loses front load exactly where it is carrying peak lateral G through the banking, which scrubs the front tyre and raises its surface temperature, leaving the driver worse off a lap later than when he began trying. Over a 24 lap sprint with no stops there is no recovery mechanism.

What movement exists is confined to the high teens, where Stroll, Alonso, Bottas, Sainz and Perez shuffle about. That is the only part of the field where the raw pace spread is wide enough to overcome the aerodynamic penalty. Hulkenberg’s orange line drops away from lap three and terminates around lap seven, Audi having pitted with a problem before sending him back out for mileage.

The conclusion is blunt: in sprint format at this circuit, Friday afternoon was the race.

Qualifying

Three drivers, three different sector bests, and 0.133 seconds covering the lot. Norris took pole with a 1:11.163, Russell 0.102s adrift, Antonelli 0.133s back, all on two lap old Softs so genuinely like for like. Russell owns sector one at 24.300, Norris sector two at 24.898, Antonelli sector three at 21.643. Add the bests together and you get an ideal lap of 70.841, some 0.322s quicker than the pole time actually set, which tells you nobody stitched a complete lap together.

The sector distribution is diagnostic rather than incidental. Sector one is Tarzan and the run through to the banked Hugenholtz, a low speed traction limited opening, and Russell’s advantage there suggests a Mercedes finding rear grip on corner exit. Sector two is the technical middle section through Scheivlak and the Hans Ernst chicane, and that is precisely where McLaren’s overnight setup change would show up on the timesheets. Sector three is the sweep through the final banked corner onto the pit straight, and Antonelli’s 21.643 is the standout number of the session.

One contextual figure worth carrying: Russell’s sprint pole on Friday was a 1:11.567. Norris’s Grand Prix pole was 1:11.163. Four tenths in twenty four hours, part track evolution and part setup work.

The throttle channels are near indistinguishable, with no visible lift or correction from any of the three. This was three drivers close to the maximum, separated by which happened to be strongest where it counted.

Race Summary and Analysis

The first thing to understand about Sunday is that McLaren changed the car between Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon, and that decision won them the race before a wheel had turned in anger. Norris had finished third in the sprint, comfortably beaten by Russell and then passed by Leclerc’s soft tyre gamble, and the team responded with significant setup changes ahead of qualifying rather than accepting the balance they had. It worked immediately: pole position, his second in succession and the eighteenth of his career, with Russell alongside and Antonelli third. That is a meaningful engineering statement in a sprint weekend, because parc fermé and the compressed running mean you get one genuine window to correct a car and you had better be right. At Zandvoort, where the aerodynamic penalty of following is as severe as anywhere on the calendar and the only real braking zone is Tarzan, pole is worth a great deal more than the three tenths or so it typically represents elsewhere. Heavy rain fell before the start and eased just in time, leaving a damp, drying surface and a grid full of engineers recalculating everything.

Verstappen’s race lasted one lap, and the mechanism is worth spelling out because it was entirely predictable in hindsight. He lost the rear coming through the banked final corner on a damp surface with tyres barely into their working range, and hit the barrier hard enough to send debris and a wheel across the circuit. Banking is unforgiving in these conditions for a specific reason: it artificially increases vertical load, which lets a driver carry speed that the actual coefficient of friction between rubber and wet tarmac cannot support. The car feels planted right up until the moment the water film breaks the contact patch, and then there is no progressive warning, just a sudden yaw with no time to catch it. Add the instantaneous torque delivery of the 2026 power unit through the MGU K on a corner exit and you have a genuinely nasty trap. He was unhurt, which matters more than the result, but ending his final home race in the wall days after signing a contract extension was about as bleak a script as Zandvoort could have written. Lawson deserves credit for taking avoiding action cleanly with a spinning car directly ahead of him.

The red flag reset everything, and the restart is where the race properly began. Antonelli had already demonstrated the better launch once, taking second from Russell off the original start, and he repeated the trick at the restart to take the lead from Norris. Standing starts on a drying surface are a specific engineering problem: the clutch bite point has to be set for a grip level nobody can measure accurately, tyre surface temperature is uneven after a period behind the barriers, and the difference between a good getaway and a wheelspin limited one is measured in tens of milliseconds of clutch release. Mercedes clearly had that mapping right, twice. Antonelli then stretched out a lead and for a substantial portion of the race looked like the man to beat. The interesting question is why that evaporated. His pace slipped in the final third while Norris’s did not, and given both were managing the same drying, evolving surface, the likeliest explanation is tyre state rather than raw car performance: Antonelli having used more of his rubber building the early gap, and then having nothing left when it mattered.

Norris’s recovery was patient and then clinical. He sat within range through the middle of the race rather than attacking prematurely, which at Zandvoort is the only sensible approach given that following costs you front load precisely where you need it through the banked sections and scrubs the front tyre for a lap or more afterwards. The opportunity, when it came, was created by somebody else’s error. Antonelli committed to a half move on Hamilton, who by then had cycled ahead of the leaders on a different pit sequence, compromised his own line and exit, and Norris was through both of them. The margin at the flag tells you everything about the underlying pace: 11.536 seconds over Antonelli, and 32.332 seconds over Piastri in the identical car. That second number is the genuinely significant one. Same machinery, same strategy options, and a third of a minute between them. Norris is not merely benefiting from an improved MCL40, he is comprehensively out driving the other side of the garage.

Ferrari, meanwhile, produced the sort of strategic muddle that costs a team real points. Leclerc got ahead of Hamilton early and the two of them settled into a train behind Russell, at which point the pit wall had a clear problem: the faster car was second in the queue. Hamilton’s frustration on the radio was not petulance, it was an accurate description of a car losing time it could not recover, because every lap spent in dirty air at Zandvoort compounds through tyre surface temperature and degrades the following car further. Ferrari eventually instructed Leclerc to pit, and he took another lap to comply. That single lap is the whole story. Hamilton immediately found pace in clean air and hauled himself back into contention for the podium, only to run out of laps against Russell and finish fourth, 0.503 seconds behind. His post race question about whether he was being used as a guinea pig was pointed, but his more substantive observation was the correct one: faster deployment of team orders would have banked more points. Fourth and fifth, split by half a second, from a car whose drivers had both talked up the circuit’s suitability beforehand.

The endgame turned on Ocon stopping at Turn 3 on lap 55 and the resulting virtual safety car, and the way the two title contending teams read it could not have been more different. Ferrari bolted on fresh tyres. Mercedes, seeing that, pitted Antonelli defensively to protect against the Scuderia’s new rubber, which dropped him behind Russell and forced the team into an inversion, moving Russell aside so the fresher car could chase. Russell then had to hold off both Ferraris on older tyres, and did, which was the most underrated drive of the afternoon. Antonelli himself called the strategy risky and he was right: four stops against Norris’s and Russell’s three, a swap that only made sense if the fresh tyre delta covered the additional pit loss, and against Ferrari it just about did. Norris queried whether he should have pitted under that VSC and did not need to, winning by over eleven seconds regardless. Mercedes banked 46 constructors’ points, which is the number that will please Brackley most, and Antonelli retains the championship lead heading to a home race at Monza where he is already set for a grid penalty for a planned engine change. Norris keeps a mathematically faint title bid alive, and Zandvoort, in its final Formula 1 outing, delivered the chaos it always promised.

Race Standings

Place this alongside the sprint chart and you have the entire weekend in two images. That one was parallel lines; this is genuine churn, with the lead changing hands at least six times across 72 laps.

Norris leads from pole, loses it to Antonelli at the restart around lap four, and the Italian holds until roughly lap 20. Hamilton’s red line then climbs to P1 for a few laps around 21 to 24, Antonelli reclaims it through to about 39, Norris takes it back, Leclerc leads briefly near 47, and Norris assumes it for good from the low fifties.

Reading these properly means separating genuine overtakes from pit cycle artefacts, and most of those swaps are the latter. Hamilton and Leclerc leading at various points reflects offset stop timing rather than anything done on track. The one that counts is Norris retaking Antonelli in the final third, and you can see the orange line go flat and stay flat from that moment.

Lawson’s blue line is the most stable thing on the board, locked at seventh from around lap 20 and never troubled, some eighty seconds clear of Hulkenberg behind.

Tyre Strategy

The dominant feature of this chart is the near vertical line at lap two, where almost every single row shows a stint ending. That is the red flag for Verstappen’s crash handing the entire field a free tyre change, which is about the most valuable gift a strategist can receive.

Two rows deviate, and they are the two that matter. Antonelli and Russell both declined the swap and stayed on their starting Mediums, running them to laps 21 and 17 respectively. Mercedes backed the durable compound and the long game while most of the field, Norris included, bolted on used Softs for restart grip. The outcome is instructive: Antonelli still out launched Norris at the restart despite giving away compound advantage, which says the Mercedes launch mapping was worth more than the rubber.

Stint counts then diverge. Norris, Antonelli, Leclerc, Piastri and Hamilton all took four green flag stints against three for Russell, and with an eighteen second pit lane both approaches were defensible. The three stop won.

The cluster between laps 53 and 56 is the Ocon virtual safety car, with Hamilton, Leclerc, Piastri and Antonelli all fitting used Softs within three laps of one another. Antonelli’s defensive stop sits right there at 56.

Alonso’s is the outlier: Soft lap 2 to lap 34, then a Hard to the flag. Minimum exposure, minimum risk, ninth place from an Aston Martin that had no business being there.

Pit Times

A mean of 18.01 seconds, comfortably the lowest of the season, and that single figure reframes everything else about this race. Zandvoort’s pit lane is short with benign entry and exit geometry, so total time lost is dramatically lower than at somewhere like Silverstone, where the same chart read 31.60s. The strategic consequence is direct: when a stop costs eighteen seconds rather than thirty, a fresh tyre advantage of half a second per lap pays for itself in thirty six laps rather than sixty. That is exactly why the leading runners were able to take three and four stops without wrecking their races.

VCARB head the chart at 16.70s, comfortably clear, with Alpine at 17.17 and Aston Martin at 17.58. All three deserve credit for genuinely sharp work.

The revealing detail is that all three front running teams sit in the bottom half. Mercedes 18.26, McLaren 18.37, and Ferrari 18.81, the latter eight tenths above the mean and slowest bar Cadillac. That compounds Ferrari’s afternoon considerably: they made four stops with Leclerc and each one cost them relative to their direct rivals, on top of the delayed team order that had already bottled Hamilton up behind his team mate.

The spread from VCARB to Cadillac is 2.44 seconds. Across a four stop race that is the better part of ten seconds of cumulative difference, which at this circuit is worth several positions.

The Circuit

This is the last one. Let’s get that out of the way first, because it colours everything about the weekend. The 2026 event marks the conclusion of Zandvoort’s current tenure on the Formula 1 calendar, and it’s going out in the most Zandvoort way imaginable: a sprint weekend, points on all three days, the whole place drowned in orange smoke and North Sea drizzle, and a brand new set of regulations to wrestle with on a circuit that punishes the smallest error harder than almost anywhere else. It’s a farewell, and it’s going to be loud.

For the engineer, though, the sentiment stops at the pit wall. Zandvoort is a proper problem to solve, and 2026 makes it a fresh one. At 4.26km with 14 corners it’s one of the shortest laps of the year, second only to Monaco, a narrow, old-school rollercoaster carved through the dunes with gravel where the run-off should be and sand blowing across the racing line every time the wind shifts. It is, in character, a downforce circuit. Short straights, relentless corners, and two banked sections that exist nowhere else in the sport.

That banking is the story, and it’s where the 2026 regulations get interesting. So before we walk the lap, a word on the two things that define this place.

The banking and the battery

Zandvoort’s 2020 renovation added the feature that defines it today: the banked final corner, the Arie Luyendyk Bocht, steeper than most NASCAR ovals, which lets cars carry huge speed onto the pit straight. Turn 3, Hugenholtz, is banked too. Both are steeper than Indianapolis, and both do something no flat corner does: they load the tyre vertically through the corner rather than just laterally. The car is effectively heavier in the banking, the contact patch is hammered into the road, and the loads go up in a way the simulation has to model carefully. Pirelli has historically run higher pressures here specifically to cope with it, and that’s before you factor in a 2026 car with a different aerodynamic platform and less downforce to lean on.

Now the battery. This is where Zandvoort behaves far more like Hungary than Spa. The straights are short, every corner is a braking or a loading event, and the harvesting is near constant. Nobody is going to run out of energy here the way they did in the Ardennes. If anything the opposite problem applies. There’s so little opportunity to deploy that the state of charge barely drops, and that has a consequence for the racing. The Overtake Mode boost, which replaced DRS this year, only does its job if the car behind has an energy advantage over the car ahead. When everyone’s sitting on a full store all lap, that advantage evaporates. We saw the same thing at Monaco and at the Hungaroring.

But Zandvoort has a saving grace those two don’t, and it’s bolted to the exit of the last corner. More on that when we get there.

Sector 1: Turns 1 to 6

You arrive at Tarzan, Turn 1, at the end of the pit straight having been slingshotted out of the banking behind you, and this is the corner that matters most all weekend. It’s the primary overtaking zone, cars braking from over 280km/h into a tight hairpin, the ideal late-braking opportunity, with the banking on entry absorbing some of the load but demanding precise trail-braking. It’s a proper overtaking corner, wide enough on entry for two and occasionally three cars, and it’s where the opening-lap chaos typically unfolds.

The 2026 car should make Tarzan even better than it already is. Less mass means shorter braking distances, and the narrower track width of these cars matters enormously on a circuit this tight, because it turns a one-and-a-half-car gap into a genuine two-car gap. The move into Tarzan is the whole ball game at Zandvoort, and this year I’d expect more of them to work.

Get it wrong, mind, and Tarzan bites. It’s a hairpin, so a late lunge that misses the apex sends you wide onto the exit and straight into the path of anyone who placed their car properly. The classic Zandvoort mistake is to win the corner and lose the drag out of it.

Out of Tarzan the track kinks through Gerlach, Turn 2, a quick right that sets the entry to the first banked corner. And Hugenholtz, Turn 3, is a lovely, weird thing. A hairpin left, banked at around 18 degrees, that lets a driver pick from several lines depending on how brave they’re feeling. Ride the banking high and you carry more speed but travel further. Cut it low and you take the shorter route but lose the camber’s help. Getting the rotation right here is critical because it fires you uphill into the dunes, and a scruffy exit from Hugenholtz costs you all the way up the hill. This is a corner where the banking flatters a well-balanced car and exposes a nervous one, and with the reduced downforce of 2026, keeping the rear settled as you get on the power up the slope is going to sort the good laps from the average ones.

Sector 2: Turns 7 to 10

This is the dune section, and it’s the best part of the circuit. The track climbs and twists through the sand hills in a sequence of blind, committed corners where the apex is often hidden behind a crest until you’re already turning in. It’s genuinely intimidating, and it’s where a driver who knows the place inside out makes the difference.

The jewel is Scheivlak, one of the great corners nobody outside the sport talks about. A fast right-hander that drops downhill and away from you just as you commit, taken at enormous speed with a wall of gravel waiting on the exit for anyone who overcooks it. It’s a sweeping, heavily loaded corner where the banking earlier supports entry speed, but getting the rotation wrong unsettles the car badly for the next section. In a 2026 car, with 15 to 30 percent less downforce than the ground-effect machines that have been through here recently, Scheivlak becomes a real test of nerve again. It’s the sort of corner where the aero cut hands the fast stuff its teeth back, and I mean that as a compliment.

The middle of the sector is a linked run of medium-speed corners, and here the reading is all about the front tyres. The sequence demands high mechanical grip and smooth steering inputs, and cars that are gentle on the front tyres through here gain significantly in the final stint when others are degrading. That’s the tyre-management story of the whole race in one sentence. Zandvoort doesn’t shred tyres through wear so much as cook them through sustained load and heat, and on a circuit with no straight long enough to cool them, the surface temperature just climbs across a stint. The driver who’s smooth and patient through the dunes in the first half of a stint has grip left when it counts. The one who attacks it will be sliding around and haemorrhaging lap time by the end.

There’s a sprint-weekend wrinkle here that’s worth dwelling on. With only a single practice session before everything starts counting for points, the teams get almost no time to gather tyre-degradation data on a unique circuit with a brand new car. Everyone is guessing to some degree, and the ones who guess best on Friday morning, or who lean hardest on their simulation and their drivers’ encyclopaedic knowledge of the place, will look clever all weekend. Track familiarity has always been worth a lot at Zandvoort. In a sprint format, with these regulations, it’s worth even more.

Sector 3: Turns 11 to 14

Out of the dunes and into the run home, a couple of tightening corners through Turns 12 and 13 that set you up for the moment the whole lap has been building towards.

Arie Luyendyk, Turn 14, is the famous one. The 18-degree banked final turn catapults cars onto the start-finish straight, the banking is higher than Indianapolis, and getting the exit line right can be worth a full tenth of a second, with the crowd standing directly above it. It is a spectacle and an engineering puzzle in equal measure. You commit to the banking, let it carry the car round at a speed that feels wrong, and get the power down as early as you dare so you’re accelerating hard by the time you spill out onto the straight.

And here’s Zandvoort’s saving grace, the thing Monaco and Hungary don’t have. The banked final corner was designed specifically to make the run into Turn 1 a real overtaking chance. It works because the banking lets a following car stay close through a corner where a flat final turn would break the tow, and then slingshot onto the straight with a genuine exit-speed advantage. That advantage is mechanical, not electrical, so it doesn’t depend on having more battery than the car ahead. Bolt the Overtake Mode boost on top of a good exit from the banking and you’ve got a real move into Tarzan, even in a season where the energy game struggles to create passes elsewhere. The corner that was built for the DRS era turns out to be perfectly suited to the one that’s replaced it.

The transition through here is the active-aero detail to watch. You need Corner Mode, full downforce, through the banking to keep the car planted, and you want Straight Mode, low drag, the instant you’re onto the pit straight. Whichever team has the crispest, best-timed switch between the two picks up speed at the trap that nobody can see coming.

What decides Sunday

Qualifying, as ever at a circuit where overtaking beyond Tarzan is scarce. Track position is gold here, and the sprint format doubles down on that by making Saturday’s grid matter for points too.

After that, three things. Front-tyre management through the dunes, because the car that’s kind to its rubber in the first half of a stint wins the second half. The banking, which loads the tyres in a way nothing else on the calendar does and which the teams have precious little practice time to get right this year. And the run out of Arie Luyendyk into Tarzan, which remains the one place on this beautiful, brutal little circuit where a brave driver with a good exit can actually make something happen.

The energy war that defined Spa is off the table here. What’s left is an old-school chassis contest on a narrow strip of tarmac in the dunes, with two banked corners, a savage tyre challenge and a farewell crowd making more noise than any grandstand in the sport. If Zandvoort really is bowing out after this, it’s going out exactly as it should. On its own terms, giving nothing away for free, and asking the driver for everything. I’ll miss it.

1. Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 219 pts

Six wins, six poles, nine podiums and a 50 point lead in a second season. Whatever reservations anyone held about the promotion timing have been settled by the results, and settled emphatically.

The core of it is the run from China to Monaco, five wins in six rounds, with the Miami weekend the only one that required anything resembling a scrap. That sequence effectively built the championship lead he is now defending. What impresses is not the raw speed, which was never in doubt, but the absence of the errors that usually litter a young driver’s first title campaign. He has not thrown a race away.

The middle of the season wobbled. A late retirement at Barcelona while running well, third in Austria, then a sprint win at Silverstone followed by a point less fifteenth on the Sunday. Three rounds, 23 points, and a championship that briefly looked live again. His response was pole at Spa by three tenths over Verstappen and a win, then a recovery from seventh on the grid to third at the Hungaroring on a long opening stint and strong rubber at the end.

That Hungary drive is the one to remember. It was not a car advantage weekend and he still extended the lead. Championships are won by the driver who scores well on the days the car will not win.

2. Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 169 pts

Second in the championship at the break, ahead of his team mate, and doing it through accumulation rather than peaks. Eleven starts, eleven finishes, ten of them in the points. In a season where almost everyone else has lost a weekend to failure or contact, that reliability of return is the whole reason he sits where he does.

The Austrian Grand Prix win was the standout, and the run of second places in Canada and Monaco either side of it was the best sustained form of his Ferrari tenure. Since then it has been a steadier diet of fourths and fifths, which is roughly what the car is worth on a normal weekend.

The second half of the season has picked up some avoidable friction. He tipped Russell into the gravel at Spa on lap one, an incident that cost his compatriot a retirement and, on the balance of the stewards’ view, was his to own. Hungary brought a grid penalty, then a five second time penalty that demoted him from fourth on the road to fifth, and a fairly pointed public response to the punishment along with a skipped drivers’ meeting.

None of that is catastrophic in points terms. But 50 back with 291 available means he needs the weekends to go cleanly, and three of the last four have not. The pace is there. The margins are being given away elsewhere.

3. George Russell | Mercedes | 160 pts

The hardest driver on the grid to assess fairly, because the raw pace and the points total do not agree. He won in Australia and Austria, finished second in China, Barcelona and Silverstone, and has been on or near his team mate’s pace across most of the season. On a straight speed comparison this is not a driver being beaten by 59 points.

The results sheet says otherwise, and it says so for reasons that split fairly evenly between misfortune and self inflicted damage. The Spa retirement was not his fault: he went around the outside of Hamilton, got clipped on the rear, and spun into the gravel on lap one. The Canada retirement removed another likely podium. Those are the debits he cannot control.

Monaco is the other kind. Twelfth on a weekend when his team mate won is not a car problem, and the Hungary Sunday started badly and never recovered. Two rounds, effectively zero return, in a season decided by cumulative points.

There is also a visible temperature problem. The radio traffic at recent rounds has been unambiguous, and a driver publicly venting at his own pit wall while his team mate wins the championship in the same machinery is a situation that tends to compound rather than resolve.

He is quick enough to be leading this championship. He is not going to, and the reasons are mostly on his side of the ledger.

4. Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 138 pts

A season of real highs sitting on top of a foundation that keeps giving way. The Silverstone win was excellent and the second place at Spa behind Antonelli was arguably the better drive of the two. Add third places in Australia and Japan and there is clear evidence of a driver operating at the level everyone expects.

The problem is the weekends in between. A retirement in Monaco, of all places. Fifteenth in Barcelona. Eighth in Miami and eighth again in Austria on days when Hamilton finished sixth and won respectively. That is four rounds where the return was well below what the Ferrari was capable of, and it is the entire 31 point gap to his team mate.

The intra team comparison is the uncomfortable one. Leclerc has generally had the edge on a single lap, which is the traditional shape of this pairing, but Hamilton has converted more Sundays into solid points and has not had a single non finish. Over eleven rounds that is the difference between second and fourth in the championship.

What he has not lost is the ability to win from the front when the weekend comes together, and Ferrari should be quick enough at two or three of the remaining circuits to give him that chance. Fourth in the standings with ten points covering him and Norris means the second half is about consolidation, not glory.

5. Lando Norris | McLaren | 128 pts

A defending champion who took until round eleven to win a race, which tells you almost everything about how thoroughly the regulation change reset his team’s position.

The Hungary victory was genuine relief. Pole, jumped at the start by his own team mate, then handed the lead back by circumstance rather than overtaking it. He will not care. Before that the season reads as a series of near misses: second in Miami, third in Barcelona, fourths and fifths elsewhere, and a car that could be quick on Saturday without translating it on Sunday.

Three zero score weekends have done the damage. A non start in China, retirements in Canada and Monaco. That is potentially 40 or so points that never arrived, and he is 91 behind Antonelli. The championship was not lost through pace.

The Spa weekend deserves a note. A power unit grid penalty dropped him down the order and he recovered to seventh with the fastest lap, which is a decent salvage on a circuit where track position matters more than most.

Fifth in the standings is not where a reigning champion expects to be at the break, and the honest read is that he has been marginally the better McLaren driver over the season without either of them having a car worth defending a title with. The second half is about maximising what is now clearly the third quickest package.

6. Max Verstappen | Red Bull | 109 pts

No wins after eleven rounds, which is a sentence nobody has written about Verstappen since 2020. Sixth in the championship, 110 points behind the leader, and the honest explanation is the car rather than the driver.

Second places in Austria and Hungary and a third at Spa are the high water marks, and in each case he was extracting more from the package than it deserved. The Hungary drive in particular, second on a circuit that punishes an unbalanced car, was the sort of result that flatters a team’s development programme rather than reflecting it.

Three retirements have compounded it, and the twentieth at Silverstone was a genuinely bad weekend by any measure. Take the DNFs out and he is nearer the podium places, but that is a truth available to half the grid.

The interesting thing has been the response. There has been noticeably less public frustration than his reputation would predict, and the driving has been calibrated rather than desperate. He has been banking third and fourth places on days when a more aggressive approach would have collected a wall or a rival. For a driver who has spent five seasons with a car capable of winning, adjusting to one that is not is a distinct skill, and he has shown it.

The question for the second half is not whether he can drive around the deficit. He cannot. It is whether Milton Keynes can close it.

7. Oscar Piastri | McLaren | 92 pts

The unluckiest campaign on the grid, and it is not close. Two non starts to open the season means his 92 points come from nine rounds rather than eleven, and the Hungarian Grand Prix added a failure of almost theatrical cruelty.

He was jumped from the start into the lead at the Hungaroring, controlled the first half of the race, and then lost it in a sequence that had nothing to do with him: pitted from the lead, emerged into traffic, was hit by a lapped Sainz on lap 39, and then suffered a gearbox failure to finish the job. His assessment of the Sainz incident afterwards was unprintable and entirely justified. Wolff’s separate complaint about the delay in showing blue flags is a related grievance worth following.

Before that the season had been solid rather than spectacular. Second in Japan, third in Miami, then a run of fourths and fifths that mirror Norris without quite matching him. Eleventh in Canada and eleventh at Silverstone are the weekends he will want back on merit.

The per race average is respectable given the machinery. Nine starts, seven points finishes, one podium and one race led from the front. The championship position of seventh understates him considerably, and if the appeal McLaren have lodged shifts anything, it will not shift enough to change that.

A season to write off and rebuild from, which is a waste of a driver in his prime.

8. Isack Hadjar | Red Bull | 68 pts

The promotion of the season, and the answer to anyone who assumed the senior Red Bull seat is a career ending assignment.

Sixty eight points from a first campaign in the front running team, 41 behind a four time world champion in identical machinery, is a strong return by any historical benchmark for that seat. More telling is the shape of it. After a retirement in Australia and a difficult opening flyaway run, the season from Canada onward reads: fifth, fourth, sixth, sixth, fifth, sixth, sixth. That is seven consecutive points finishes and a variance so low it looks like a driver who has worked out precisely where the car’s limit sits and has decided not to explore beyond it.

That is exactly the correct approach in a car that is fourth best. There is no glory available, so the job is to bank everything the machinery is worth every single Sunday, and he has done it more consistently than Verstappen has, even if the ceiling is lower.

The Spa weekend included a power unit grid penalty and he still finished sixth, which is the kind of quiet recovery drive that does not make headlines but does make careers.

What has not yet been tested is what he does with a genuinely quick car and a genuine chance to win. Nothing so far suggests he would waste it, and Red Bull will have noticed that their succession problem has resolved itself rather quickly.

9. Liam Lawson | Racing Bulls | 43 pts

The most improved driver on the grid relative to expectation, and the reason Racing Bulls lead the midfield.

Forty three points from a car that is realistically the fifth or sixth quickest package is a strong conversion rate, and it has come from consistency rather than any single standout weekend. Sevenths in China and Canada, sixth in Monaco, sixth at Spa, eighths in Barcelona and Budapest. There is no headline result in there, and that is precisely the point. In a season where the top four teams have shed points through retirements, penalties and contact, a midfield driver who reliably collects what is available accumulates a surprising total.

The error rate has been low. One retirement, in Miami, and one genuinely poor weekend at Spa where twelfth was below the car. Everything else has landed within a position or two of where the machinery deserved to be.

The comparison with Lindblad is instructive. Twenty points clear of a highly rated rookie in the same car is the correct margin for an established driver, comfortable without being crushing, and it suggests Lawson has settled into the role rather than being threatened by it.

Whether that earns another look from the senior team is a different question, given Hadjar has rather conclusively occupied that conversation. But this is the season Lawson needed, and he has delivered it without fuss, which is not something that could always have been said.

10. Pierre Gasly | Alpine | 42 pts

Carrying Enstone almost single handedly, and 42 of the team’s 61 points is the number that proves it.

The Monaco podium is the season’s outlier and its highlight. Third around the streets in a car that has spent the rest of the year fighting for the lower points was a properly executed weekend rather than an attrition inheritance, and it remains the only time all season an Alpine has been genuinely near the front.

Elsewhere the pattern is honest midfield graft. Sixth in China, sevenths in Japan and Barcelona, eighth in Canada. Reliable, unglamorous, and worth exactly what it looks like.

The concern is the trend since Austria: thirteenth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth. Four rounds, one point. Either the car has stagnated while the midfield developed around it, or something in the second half circuit mix does not suit it. Given that run includes both Silverstone and the Hungaroring, which ask almost opposite questions of a chassis, stagnation is the simpler explanation and the more worrying one.

Gasly’s own contribution to that decline appears minimal. He has finished ten of eleven, the only retirement coming in Miami, and has out qualified and out raced his team mate consistently.

There is not much more available from him. Whatever Alpine achieve in the second half will depend on whether the upgrade programme produces a car worth his effort, because at the moment he is doing everything except manufacturing pace that is not there.

11. Arvid Lindblad | Racing Bulls | 23 pts

A creditable rookie campaign, and one that has grown rather than faded, which is the harder direction.

The eighth place on debut in Australia was the early flash, followed by a realistic adjustment period: twelfth, fourteenth, fourteenth, then a non start in Canada. That middle sequence is where most first season drivers either learn or unravel. He learnt. From Monaco onward the results read seventh, ninth, tenth, seventh, ninth, tenth, which is six consecutive finishes inside the top ten and four points scores from six rounds.

Twenty three points, and being beaten by Lawson by twenty, is roughly the correct outcome. A rookie who matched his experienced team mate would raise questions about the team mate. A rookie 20 back with an upward curve is exactly what a junior programme is supposed to produce.

The error count is the encouraging part. One non start, no retirements attributable to contact, and no weekend where he has finished significantly below the car’s capability. For a driver in his first full season, at a team whose entire purpose is driver assessment, keeping the car pointing forwards while gradually finding the pace is the assignment.

The next step is the harder one: converting sevenths into fifths on weekends where the car is genuinely capable of it. He has not yet had one of those, largely because the Racing Bulls has not offered many. The second half will tell us more than the first did.

12. Franco Colapinto | Alpine | 19 pts

A season that shows the ceiling clearly and the floor rather more often.

Sixth in Canada and seventh in Miami are legitimate results that demonstrate he can operate at the level when the weekend comes to him. Ninth at Silverstone and tenth at Spa added to the tally in the second half. Nineteen points from a car this marginal is not a disgrace.

The problem is the 23 point gap to Gasly and the distribution behind it. Fourteenths in Australia and Monaco, sixteenth in Japan, fifteenths in Austria and Budapest. Those are weekends where his team mate scored or came close, in the same machinery, and in a constructors’ fight being decided by five point margins, a second car that contributes in four rounds out of eleven is the deficit.

Some of that is a car that punishes small errors, and Alpine’s package has been unforgiving all season. Some of it is qualifying. In a midfield this compressed, starting three places back is usually a finish three places back, and there is no overtaking your way out of it on a Sunday.

The reliability record is at least clean. Eleven starts, eleven finishes, no retirements, no significant contact. He has not been costing the team races through mistakes, which matters for a driver still establishing himself.

What he needs is a weekend where the car is worth points and he takes all of them. It has not happened often enough.

13. Oliver Bearman | Haas | 18 pts

One of the genuine positives of the season, at least for the first half of it.

Seventh on the opening weekend in Australia and fifth in China represent a start that few predicted, and the Shanghai result in particular was a proper drive rather than an inheritance from other people’s failures. Add a tenth in Canada and the first five rounds produced eighteen points from a car that had no business being that far up the order.

Then it stopped. Since Barcelona the results are seventeenth, fourteenth, twelfth, fourteenth, nineteenth, and the points column has stayed empty for six consecutive rounds. That is not a driver decline, because the underlying performances have not visibly deteriorated. It is a car that has been overtaken by a developing midfield while Haas, as they usually must, stood still.

The comparison with Ocon is the strongest evidence in his favour. Eighteen points to three, and ahead on the road in the clear majority of weekends, against a driver brought in specifically as an experienced benchmark. That is not the result anyone at Kannapolis budgeted for and it is not the result Ocon expected either.

Two retirements, in Japan and Monaco, are the only blemishes on the reliability side. For a driver still early in his Formula 1 career, in a small team, the first half of this season is a substantial calling card. The second half will depend entirely on whether Haas bring anything.

14. Gabriel Bortoleto | Audi | 10 pts

The more consistent of the two Audi drivers, and the one delivering the results that suggest the project is moving in the right direction.

Ninth on debut weekend in Australia was an encouraging opener, followed by a non start in China and then a long run in the eleventh to thirteenth band that produced nothing. Seven rounds without a point is a hard stretch for a driver in his first full season, and the temptation to force a result is exactly what ends most such campaigns in a barrier.

He resisted it. The reward came at Silverstone and Spa: eighth in both, back to back, on two circuits that ask fundamentally different questions of a car. That combination matters more than the eight points, because it suggests a genuine step in the package rather than a favourable weekend, and it means Audi can expect to be in that fight regularly rather than occasionally.

The error record is the most impressive line on his sheet. Eleven entries, no retirements attributable to contact or mistakes, and no weekend where he has finished meaningfully below the car. New teams need clean data more than they need heroics, and he has provided it.

Ten points against Hülkenberg’s two flatters him slightly, given how many of the German’s weekends have ended in failure. But being available every Sunday is itself a contribution, and it is the reason Audi are eighth rather than tenth.

15. Carlos Sainz | Williams | 6 pts

The most straightforwardly disappointing season on the grid, and it is difficult to attribute much of it to the driver.

Six points from eleven rounds, all of them from three ninth places in China, Miami and Canada. Since then, nothing: twelfth in Barcelona is the best of the second half, and the run through Silverstone, Spa and Budapest reads seventeenth, sixteenth, eighteenth. For a driver with his record, arriving at a team that was supposed to be on an upward trajectory, this is not a season anyone forecast.

Some of it is machinery. The Williams has been slower than expected and less reliable than required, and there is only so much a driver can extract from a car that is ninth quickest. But the second half of the season has seen him drift backwards even relative to that, which suggests either a development direction that does not suit him or a fundamental problem the team has not solved.

Hungary was a low point of a different sort. Running a lap down, he collided with the race leading McLaren on lap 39 and effectively decided the outcome of somebody else’s Grand Prix. Piastri’s post race assessment was blunt and difficult to argue with, though the delay in deploying blue flags is a legitimate mitigating factor that others have raised.

Watching Audi overtake Williams in the constructors’ table on the same afternoon completed a genuinely bad weekend at the end of a genuinely bad half season.

16. Alex Albon | Williams | 5 pts

Five points, and a reliability record that has made the season nearly impossible to assess properly.

A non start in China, retirements in Canada, Barcelona and Silverstone. That is four weekends from eleven where the car did not reach the flag, in a midfield fight where reaching the flag is most of the job. Whatever pace Albon has had, and there is reason to think it has been reasonable, has gone unrecorded on almost half the Sundays.

What he has converted is thin: eighth in Monaco and tenth in Miami. Both were circuits where track position and attrition matter more than raw pace, which is a fair characterisation of what a Williams can offer this season.

The comparison with Sainz is close to meaningless given the failure rate. Six points to five, with Albon having contested effectively seven full races to his team mate’s ten, is not evidence of anything much. Where they have both finished, the gap has been small in either direction.

The frustration for Albon is that he arrived at this regulation change as the established senior figure at Grove, with a highly rated team mate to measure himself against and a team with genuine ambitions. Eleven rounds in, the measurement has not happened because the car keeps stopping, and the ambitions have quietly evaporated.

Grove need to find out whether their problem is design or execution, because at the moment they are wasting two good drivers simultaneously.

17. Esteban Ocon | Haas | 3 pts

Brought in to provide an experienced benchmark, and instead comprehensively beaten by the younger driver in the other car.

Three points, from a single ninth place in Monaco, is a thin return across eleven rounds. Worse is the shape of the season: eleventh, fourteenth, tenth, thirteenth, fourteenth, ninth, thirteenth, sixteenth, thirteenth, seventeenth, sixteenth. There is no upward trend, no standout weekend, and no round where he has meaningfully outperformed the car. It is eleven consecutive finishes in a narrow band just outside the points, which in a season where Haas had genuine top ten pace for the first five rounds represents a real opportunity missed.

The reliability is the one positive. Every race finished, no retirements, no contact of note. He has not been the source of Haas’s problems and he has not thrown anything away through error.

But eighteen points to three against Bearman, and behind on the road in the majority of weekends, is a comparison that does not improve with context. Both drivers had the same car through the strong early phase and the weaker recent one, and only one of them banked anything from the good period.

For a driver with his experience at a team that needs every point in the fight for seventh in the constructors’, that is the season’s clearest individual underperformance. The second half offers a chance to correct it, though only if Haas find some pace to work with.

18. Nico Hülkenberg | Audi | 2 pts

A season defined by what the car has taken away rather than what the driver has failed to deliver.

Two points, both from a ninth place in Budapest at round eleven, is a bleak headline number. Behind it sits a non start in Australia and retirements in Miami, Barcelona and Silverstone. Four weekends from eleven with nothing recorded, at a team where the primary objective of the first season is gathering data. That is a reliability problem, not a driver problem.

Where he has finished, the picture has been more respectable than the points suggest: elevenths in China and Japan, twelfths in Canada and Austria, thirteenths in Monaco and at Spa. Consistently within a place or two of Bortoleto, occasionally ahead, on a car that has spent most of the year outside the points. In several of those rounds an eleventh was genuinely all that was available.

The Hungary result matters more than two points normally would. It confirmed that both Audi cars can reach the top ten, and it was the score that lifted the team above Williams in the constructors’ standings. For a manufacturer entry building towards something, having your senior driver validate the package is worth having.

He has been the quicker Audi on average and has less to show for it, which is an unfair but familiar outcome. If the failures stop, the points will follow, and Audi’s second half depends on that rather more than on any driver adjustment.

19. Fernando Alonso | Aston Martin | 1 pt

One point. That is the entire return from eleven rounds for one of the finest drivers of the modern era, and it is a devastating comment on the machinery rather than the man.

The point came at Monaco, tenth place, on the one weekend of the season where a slow car with a driver capable of extracting everything from it can still land in the top ten. It is, tellingly, also the only round where an Aston Martin has finished inside the first thirteen.

The retirement record is the real story: Australia, China, Canada and Barcelona, four failures from eleven starts. Combined with Stroll’s six, that is ten non finishes across the garage, a reliability record of a different order to anything else on the grid. It has cost Aston Martin more than pace has, because without race distance you gather no long run tyre data, and without long run data you cannot develop your way out.

When the car has finished, it has finished fourteenth to nineteenth. The honest conclusion is that there is very little hidden pace being masked by the failures. Alonso has been extracting more than Stroll, as anyone would expect, but the difference between eighteenth and nineteenth is not a meaningful driver comparison.

The Hungary upgrade brought both cars home, thirteenth and fourteenth. Whether that is a step or a circuit that happened to suit will not be clear until Zandvoort. He deserves better than this.

20. Lance Stroll | Aston Martin | 0 pts

Zero points from eleven rounds, and six retirements. It is, in raw terms, the worst campaign on the grid by a driver whose team has scored at all.

The retirements came in Australia, China, Japan, Monaco, Barcelona, Austria and Spa. Even by the standards of a car that has clearly been fragile, that is a disproportionate share. Alonso has four failures in the same machinery; Stroll has six. Some of that is variance across a small sample, and some of it is not, and there is not enough public information to say confidently which portion is which.

Where he has finished, the results are seventeenth in Miami, fifteenth in Canada, nineteenth at Silverstone and thirteenth in Budapest. That last one is the best of his season and came on the weekend Aston Martin introduced their significant upgrade package, which at least suggests the car is no longer actively dangerous to its own championship position.

The comparison with Alonso is the one that governs everything: one point to nil, and the Spaniard ahead on the road in nearly every round where both have finished. It is the expected outcome, but the margin has not narrowed across the season.

For a driver in his position, the second half needs to produce a points finish and a materially better finishing rate. Neither looks likely on current evidence, and neither is entirely within his control.

21. Valtteri Bottas | Cadillac | 0 pts

A season spent doing the unglamorous work that a new team actually needs, with nothing on the scoreboard to show for it.

Five retirements from eleven starts, in Australia, Monaco, Barcelona, Austria and Budapest. Best finish a thirteenth in China, with a sixteenth in Canada and an eighteenth at Spa the only other results worth recording. In isolation those numbers look like a career winding down. In context they are what a brand new entry looks like in the middle of the largest regulation change in a generation.

His value to Cadillac this year is not measured in points. It is measured in calibrated feedback, in knowing what a race winning car feels like and being able to articulate precisely how far this one is from it, and in not destroying expensive components chasing a result that does not exist. On all three counts he has done exactly what he was hired for.

The retirement rate is the concern rather than the pace. Nine failures across the two Cadillac cars is the number that should worry the team most, because reliability is the gateway to everything else a first year operation needs: race distance data, tyre degradation understanding, pit crew rhythm, strategy rehearsal. None of it is learnable from the garage.

He is a better driver than nought points suggests, and everyone in the paddock knows it. Whether that patience is rewarded before the season ends is another question entirely.

22. Sergio Pérez | Cadillac | 0 pts

The other half of a line up assembled for exactly this situation, and the results reflect the machinery rather than the man.

Four retirements, in Canada, Austria, Belgium and Hungary, with three of those coming in the last four rounds. That late season cluster is the more concerning pattern, because it suggests the reliability picture is deteriorating rather than improving as the team accumulates mileage, which is the opposite of what a first year operation should be seeing.

Where he has finished, the pattern is fourteenth to seventeenth: sixteenth in Australia, fifteenth in China, seventeenth in Japan, fourteenth in Barcelona and again at Silverstone. Consistently at the back, occasionally ahead of an Aston Martin, and comfortably matched with Bottas across the season. Neither Cadillac driver has established a clear edge, which in a car this far off the pace is not surprising and not especially informative.

The value proposition remains the same as his team mate’s. Experience, feedback, and a low error rate in a car that will not reward risk. He has delivered those, and there is no weekend this season where a Cadillac was capable of points and failed to score them through driver error.

A first points finish will most likely arrive on a chaotic Sunday somewhere in the second half, which is how new teams have always opened their accounts. Until then, the job is finishing races, and that needs fixing first.

Mercedes | 379 pts | P1

Brackley got the concept right, and in a regulation reset that is worth more than any in-season development war. Seven Grand Prix wins plus the Silverstone sprint from eleven rounds is not a car that was tuned into competitiveness. It arrived competitive, which tells you the correlation between their simulation tools and the real world survived the transition to the new power unit and active aero package intact. Not everyone can say that.

Antonelli has been the revelation. Six wins, six poles, nine podiums and a 50 point championship lead in his second season is not a driver growing into a good car, it is a driver already extracting the last few tenths from it. Monaco through to Canada was a five-race streak that effectively decided the shape of the season.

The asterisk is the other side of the garage. Russell won in Australia and Austria and has been on the pace more often than the points table suggests, but the results sheet reads badly: retirements in Canada and Belgium, a twelfth in Monaco, a scruffy Sunday in Budapest. Some of that is misfortune, notably being tipped into the gravel at Spa on lap one. Not all of it is. There is audible friction on the pit wall radio and a title fight that has quietly become a one-car affair. Fastest package on the grid, only half of it fully monetised.

Ferrari | 307 pts | P2

Second, and 72 points adrift, which is the honest measure of a team that built a good car rather than the best one. Maranello have converted almost everything available to them. Hamilton and Leclerc have a win apiece, at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone respectively, and between them they have finished in the points at a rate nobody outside Mercedes has matched. That is a competent operation.

The internal order is the story that nobody scripted. Hamilton sits second in the drivers’ championship on 169 points, ahead of Leclerc on 138, and he has done it through consistency rather than raw peaks. Leclerc’s qualifying edge has not always translated on Sunday, and a retirement in Monaco plus a fifteenth in Barcelona have cost him more than any single deficit in pace.

The concern is operational rather than technical. Spa produced the contact that eliminated Russell, and Hungary produced a five second penalty that dropped Hamilton from fourth on the road to fifth in the classification. Two weekends, two avoidable points losses, plus a skipped drivers’ meeting and a fairly pointed public reaction to the punishment. Ferrari cannot out-develop the Mercedes deficit in eleven rounds, but they can stop giving away the margins they do control. On current form, second in the constructors’ is theirs to lose rather than something they need to fight for, which is precisely the sort of comfort that breeds sloppiness.

McLaren | 220 pts | P3

The reigning champions are third, 159 points off the lead, and that is the underachievement of the season measured against where they entered this regulation cycle. Whatever advantage they had carried through 2024 and 2025 did not transfer across the rule change, which is the clearest single illustration of how thoroughly 2026 reset the order.

The luck has been genuinely rotten. Piastri did not start either of the first two rounds, so his 92 points come from a nine-race season. Norris was a non-starter in China and retired from both Canada and Monaco. That is five zero-score weekends across the two cars before you assess a single lap of pace, and in a championship decided on cumulative points, that is the gap.

Hungary was the season in one afternoon. Norris took pole, was jumped at the start by Piastri, and won only after his team mate’s race disintegrated: caught in traffic after the second stop, hit by a lapped Sainz on lap 39, then a gearbox failure to finish the job. A first win of the year, and it felt more like relief than celebration.

Worth flagging for the record: the current points are subject to a notice of intention to appeal lodged by McLaren, so this order is not yet final. The underlying pace is podium-grade. The reliability and the operational luck are not, and the two things are not the same problem.

Red Bull | 177 pts | P4

Fourth, no wins, and a four-time world champion sitting sixth in the drivers’ standings on 109 points. By Milton Keynes standards this is a bad year, and it is the single strongest piece of evidence that the 2026 rules genuinely scrambled the pecking order rather than merely nudging it.

Verstappen’s best results are second places in Austria and Hungary, and a third at Spa. He has not been off the pace so much as consistently a step behind the Mercedes, which is an unfamiliar position and one he has handled with more restraint than his reputation suggests. Three retirements have not helped, nor has the twentieth at Silverstone. Take the DNFs out and he is closer to the podium places than the table implies, but that is true of everyone and it does not win championships.

The genuine positive is Hadjar. Promoted into the senior seat and delivering 68 points from a rookie-adjacent campaign, with a run of sixths from Barcelona onward that reads like a driver who has worked out exactly what the car will and will not do. He is 41 points behind Verstappen in equal machinery, which is a respectable first-season gap to a generational talent.

Red Bull’s problem is not the driver line-up. It is that they have brought a car to a rule change that is roughly the fourth-best on the grid, and no amount of Sunday execution fixes that.

Racing Bulls | 66 pts | P5

Best of the midfield proper, and doing precisely the job a second team is supposed to do: score consistently, develop drivers, and stay out of the way of the senior outfit. Sixty-six points and a five point cushion over Alpine at the break is a solid return on a car that is nowhere near the top four on raw pace.

Lawson has been the anchor with 43 points. His season is a study in banking what is available: sevenths in China and Canada, a sixth in Monaco, a sixth at Spa, an eighth in Budapest. No standout weekend, no headline result, but also very few weekends thrown away. In a season where the top four teams have shed points through retirements and penalties, that reliability of execution is worth more than the occasional spike.

Lindblad’s 23 points from a debut campaign is the more interesting number. An eighth on debut in Australia, a seventh in Monaco, a seventh at Silverstone and points in Budapest. He has been beaten by Lawson more often than not, which is the correct outcome, but the trajectory through the middle of the season is upward and the error rate is low for a rookie.

The question for the second half is whether the Faenza operation can hold fifth. Alpine have the stronger single driver and the two teams are separated by less than one good afternoon.

Alpine | 61 pts | P6

Sixth, five points behind Racing Bulls, and carried almost entirely by one driver. Gasly’s 42 points against Colapinto’s 19 is a lopsided split, and the Monaco podium is the outlier result of Enstone’s season. That third place around the streets was worth more than the fifteen points on paper because it is the only weekend all year where the car has been anywhere near the top three on merit.

Everywhere else it has been a points-scraping exercise. Sixth in China, seventh in Japan and Barcelona, eighth in Canada. Respectable, but the pattern since Austria has been drift: thirteenth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth. Whatever development they have brought has not moved the needle relative to a midfield that is closing up rather than spreading out.

Colapinto’s season is harder to read. A sixth in Canada and a seventh in Miami show the ceiling, but the floor includes fourteenths and a fifteenth in races where Gasly scored. The gap is not catastrophic for a driver still establishing himself, and in a car this marginal the difference between P10 and P12 is often qualifying position rather than race pace. Still, when your team is fighting for fifth by single-figure margins, a second car that scores in two rounds out of eleven is the deficit.

The summer break lands at a useful moment. Alpine need an upgrade that works, not another one that shuffles the deck.

Haas | 21 pts | P7

Twenty-one points, seventh, and the best of the genuinely small teams. That is a respectable outcome for an operation with a fraction of the resource of the outfits above it, and it has come almost entirely from one side of the garage.

Bearman’s 18 points is the story. A seventh on debut weekend in Australia, a fifth in China, and a tenth in Canada represent the bulk of it, and the China result in particular was a proper drive rather than an attrition inheritance. He has been one of the few genuinely encouraging young-driver narratives outside the front-running teams, and he has done it without the benefit of a car that flatters anyone.

The concern is the trend. Since Barcelona the results read seventeenth, fourteenth, twelfth, fourteenth, nineteenth. Either the car has fallen away as the midfield developed, or the tracks since the early flyaways have exposed a fundamental weakness. Given the run includes both high-downforce and low-downforce circuits, the simpler explanation is that Haas have stopped developing while everyone around them has not, which is the recurring structural problem for a team of their size.

Ocon’s three points from eleven rounds is thin. A ninth in Monaco is the only score, and he has been behind Bearman on the road in the majority of weekends. For a driver of his experience brought in to provide a reliable benchmark, that is not the return anyone budgeted for.

Audi | 12 pts | P8

The works Audi project is a long game, and eleven rounds into it the trajectory is more informative than the position. Twelve points and eighth is not a good absolute result, but the shape of the season is right: nothing early, points arriving from Silverstone onward, and a leapfrog of Williams at the Hungaroring.

Bortoleto has been the more consistent of the two with 10 points. Eighth at Silverstone and eighth again at Spa were back-to-back scores in a car that had spent the first half of the year finishing eleventh and thirteenth. Two different circuit types, two similar results, which suggests genuine step rather than favourable circumstances. He has also been remarkably free of the incidents that usually litter a first full season.

Hülkenberg’s campaign has been the reverse: quicker on average, less to show for it. Three retirements and a non-start in Australia have cost him weekends where the car was capable of the lower points, and he only opened his account in Budapest with a ninth. That result is worth more than two points to Audi, because it is proof that both cars can get there.

The realistic ambition for the second half is to consolidate eighth and start building the operational habits that a manufacturer entry will need in 2027 and beyond. On current evidence, the direction of travel is correct even if the absolute numbers are not.

Williams | 11 pts | P9

On paper, Sainz and Albon is the strongest driver pairing outside the top four teams. Eleven points from eleven rounds is therefore the most straightforwardly disappointing return on the grid, and it is not the drivers.

Sainz’s six points come from three ninth places, in China, Miami and Canada, and his best result since is a twelfth in Barcelona. Albon’s five come from an eighth in Monaco and a tenth in Miami. Between them that is five scoring finishes from twenty-two starts, in a season where the midfield has been close enough that a single well-executed Sunday should be worth more than that.

The reliability record makes it worse. Albon has three retirements and a non-start, Sainz one retirement. That is five weekends where the car did not reach the flag with a driver capable of the lower points on board, and in a fight this tight, points not scored through failure are the difference between ninth and seventh.

Hungary was a fitting endnote. Sainz collided with the leading McLaren while a lap down, an incident Piastri described in fairly unambiguous terms afterwards, and finished eighteenth. Being overtaken by Audi in the constructors’ table on the same afternoon completed a bad weekend.

Grove have a good driver line-up, a competitive-looking design brief, and nothing to show for either. Whatever the underlying problem is, it has not surfaced publicly, which usually means it is systemic rather than mechanical.

Aston Martin | 1 pt | P10

One point. Eleven rounds, two cars, one point, scored by Alonso for tenth place in Monaco. Whatever anyone forecast for Silverstone entering this regulation cycle, this was not it.

The retirement record tells you the car has not just been slow, it has been fragile. Alonso failed to finish in Australia, China, Canada and Barcelona. Stroll’s season includes six retirements from eleven starts. That is ten non-finishes across the garage, which is a reliability problem of a different order to anything else on the grid and which has masked whatever underlying pace the car might have. You cannot develop your way out of a hole when half your Sundays end early and you gather no long-run data.

When the cars have finished, the results have been fourteenth to nineteenth, so the honest reading is that there is not much pace being hidden. Alonso has extracted more from it than Stroll, as expected, but the difference between eighteenth and nineteenth is not a meaningful driver comparison.

The major upgrade package brought to Hungary is the first real intervention of the season, and both cars finished, thirteenth and fourteenth, which is at least a data point. Whether that represents a step or simply a circuit that suited the car will not be clear until Zandvoort.

For a team with this level of investment and technical leadership, being tenth of eleven at the break is the most significant underperformance in the sport.

Cadillac | 0 pts | P11

The eleventh team, and still on nought. In isolation that reads badly. In context, a brand new entry arriving in the same year as the most comprehensive regulation change in a generation was always going to spend its first season learning rather than scoring.

Bottas and Pérez is a sensible line-up for exactly this scenario. Neither is likely to be a title asset in 2027, but both know how to give consistent, calibrated feedback and neither will bin the car chasing a result that is not there. That matters more than raw pace when the primary deliverable of year one is a validated design methodology.

The results are what you would expect. Bottas’s best is a thirteenth in China, Pérez’s a fourteenth at Spa and in Barcelona. Between them they have nine retirements, which is the number that should concern Cadillac most. Reliability is the first thing a new team must solve because it is the gateway to everything else: race distance data, tyre understanding, pit crew rhythm, strategy practice. You cannot learn any of it from the garage.

The realistic target for the second half is not points. It is two cars finishing consistently and a measurable reduction in the gap to the Aston Martins and Williams’s on Saturday. Get that, and a points finish will arrive on a chaotic Sunday somewhere, which is how new teams usually open their account anyway.
