Allocate through tp_alloc in object_new and align native constructors - #9503
Follow-up to #9386, which gave several native types constructors of their own. This addresses the CodeRabbit finding on that PR and the other differences from CPython 3.14 found by comparing the same types.
_grouper registration:itertools._grouper(parent, key) now becomes the current grouper of parent. Before, a directly constructed grouper stopped on its first __next__, even when parent still had values for key.
Positional-only binding:FromArgs gains TAKES_NO_KEYWORDS, computed at compile time from PARAMS. When it is true, bind_for reports keywords (f() takes no keyword arguments), then too many or too few positional arguments, before converting any argument. This changes error messages and order for every positional-only function using it, not which calls succeed.
Argument type mismatches:TryFromObject gains try_from_argument, overridden by PyRef<T> and Option<T>. A PyRef<T> argument that fails its isinstance check while binding now raises f() {displayname} must be {tp_name of T}, not {found} (_PyArg_BadArgument), with the display name chosen as get_displayname does: argument 'name' for a keyword-capable parameter, argument for a function taking exactly one positional argument, argument N otherwise. Option<T> reports X or None. Other conversion errors are unchanged, and a callee without a name or a failing instance keeps the previous downcast message. This changes the message of every builtin PyRef<T> argument, not which calls succeed.
_grouper arguments:GrouperArgs stays a derived FromArgs. With the two items above, its messages and check order match the clinic wrapper.
object_new allocation:object.__new__ now allocates through the type's tp_alloc slot instead of calling generic_alloc directly. A new alloc_default helper allocates a Default payload.
FutureIter and TaskStepMethWrapper: both are flagged HEAPTYPE and drop their own constructors, so they inherit object.__new__. Their alloc slots allocate an empty payload. object.__new__(T) now succeeds, __new__ is no longer in their __dict__, and arguments raise _asyncio.FutureIter() takes no arguments.
Excess-argument errors:object.__new__ and object.__init__ use the slot name, so native types report dotted names such as _io._IOBase() takes no arguments. Classes created at runtime are unchanged.
_testinternalcapi:hamt() ignores its arguments. InstructionSequence raises the InstructionSequenceType() takes no positional/keyword arguments errors on the exact type. Both take FuncArgs in py_new and need no slot_new override.
Test
Based on 65fddf95a.
On the final code: cargo fmt --all -- --check, the comparison scripts below, extra_tests/snippets/vm_argument_errors.py on this build and on CPython 3.14, and -m test on test_call, test_itertools, test_descr, test_builtin, test_codecs, test_memoryview, test_str, test_bytes, test_operator, test_inspect, test_functools and test_types pass.
Before a last change that restores the previous message when a callee has no name: cargo test --workspace --features threading ..., crates/capi tests and -m test on 47 modules (the 32 listed earlier plus test_codecs, test_os, test_string, test_userstring, test_weakref, test_typing, test_enum, test_json, test_datetime, test_time, test_socket, test_hashlib, test_binascii and test_zlib) pass with no unexpected successes.
cargo clippy ... -D warnings reports only existing lints with rustc 1.99.1 (crates/vm/src/stdlib/posix.rsneedless_collect, crates/host_env/src/socket.rs), none in the changed files.
Comparison scripts run on this build and on CPython 3.14 cover T(), T(1), T(x=1), T.__new__(T), object.__new__(T), subclassing, __new__ in __dict__ and the _grouper cases. The only differences are the ones listed below and object addresses.
Not run: wasm targets and the full extra_tests pytest run.
Not changed
_grouper has no HEAPTYPE flag.
Messages still differ where RustPython accepts a different type: str.encode(1) says str or None because encoding is an Option, and int.from_bytes(byteorder=1) goes through ArgByteOrder and keeps the old message.
The tp_name of hamt and InstructionSequence includes the module name.
Type initialization does not reject a native HEAPTYPE type that inherits its base's tp_alloc with a different payload. A check on basicsize would panic on _IOBase on 32-bit wasm, so it is left out. I did not sweep the existing native HEAPTYPE types for this case.
Improved function argument errors to identify the affected parameter and report clearer type mismatches.
Calls that do not accept keyword arguments now reject them consistently, and missing positional arguments are reported before conversion errors.
Improved constructor argument handling for instruction sequences and itertools.groupby groupers, including validation of grouper arguments and clearer errors for invalid inputs.
Object allocation now uses allocator slots and default payload allocation. Argument conversion and binding now provide argument-specific errors and keyword checks. Selected native constructors and tests also use updated argument-handling paths.
Changes: Native allocation and heap-type slots
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Default allocation and heap-type slots crates/vm/src/builtins/object.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/mod.rs, crates/stdlib/src/_asyncio.rs
slot_new invokes the class allocator slot or falls back to generic_alloc. The new alloc_default creates default payloads and adds a dictionary when HAS_DICT is set. PyFutureIter and TaskStepMethWrapper use it through slot_alloc.
TryFromObject adds try_from_argument, and FromArgs metadata identifies callables that take no keywords. Generated conversions use the new method. BadArgument can carry an optional parameter name and whether None is allowed.
Argument binding and error formatting crates/vm/src/function/argument.rs
bind_for checks keyword and positional counts before conversion for no-keyword argument types. Conversion failures include argument positions, and error formatting can include parameter names and expected types.
Hamt accepts FuncArgs without validating them. InstructionSequence rejects arguments for its exact class. PyItertoolsGrouper binds arguments and updates its parent’s current grouper. Tests cover grouper argument behavior and type-error messages.
RustPython/RustPython#9506: The change reports too few positional arguments before conversion for types marked TAKES_NO_KEYWORDS. The issue’s compress case accepts keywords, so that behavior is not covered by this change.

There was no real need to remove it. I asked for exact message parity, and hand-written parsing was the shortcut. derive(FromArgs) could not express three cases:
_grouper(1) converted parent before noticing too few arguments.
_grouper(x=1) reported the argument count instead of takes no keyword arguments.
_grouper(1, "a") could not say argument 1 must be itertools.groupby, not int, because error_msg is a fixed string.
All three are gaps in the binding layer, not specific to _grouper, so I fixed them there and restored GrouperArgs:
de050399b adds a compile-time FromArgs::TAKES_NO_KEYWORDS. bind_for uses it to check keywords and the argument count before converting anything.
The same commit adds #[pyarg(positional, expected = "...")].
942c62320 restores GrouperArgs and a real py_new.
The first commit changes messages and check order for other positional-only functions too, though not which calls succeed. If you would rather have that in its own PR, I can split it out.

Compute the expected argument position from the Python argument index.
generate_field sets pos to the Rust field index plus one. A flattened field or a _phantom field takes an index but does not add one fixed positional argument, so a later expected field can report the wrong position. Count the positional arguments consumed before the field, or reject expected when a preceding field is flattened or _phantom.

itertools._grouper(parent, tgtkey) now makes the new grouper the current
grouper of parent, as _grouper_create does. Before, the grouper was not
current and stopped on the first call to __next__.

object.__new__ and object.__init__ format their "takes no arguments" and
"takes exactly one argument" errors with the type's slot name instead of

"_io._IOBase() takes no arguments".

object.__new__ now allocates the instance through the type's alloc slot
instead of calling generic_alloc directly. alloc_default allocates a
Default payload with the same HAS_DICT handling as generic_alloc.
_asyncio.FutureIter and TaskStepMethWrapper are flagged HEAPTYPE and
drop their own constructors, so they inherit object.__new__; their alloc
slots allocate an empty payload. object.__new__ on these types now
succeeds, __new__ is no longer in their __dict__, and calling them with
arguments raises "_asyncio.FutureIter() takes no arguments".

_grouper.__new__ rejects keyword arguments when called on _grouper

argument 1 must be itertools.groupby, not T".

FromArgs gains TAKES_NO_KEYWORDS, computed at compile time from PARAMS.
When it is true, FuncArgs::bind_for reports keywords as "f() takes no
keyword arguments", then too many or too few positional arguments, before
converting any argument. Before, too few arguments and keywords were
reported after conversion, with different messages. Which calls succeed
does not change.
#[pyarg(positional, expected = "...")] reports a failed conversion as
"f() argument N must be T, not U", through the new
ArgumentError::BadArgument.

_grouper's slot_new goes back to binding a derived GrouperArgs instead of
parsing its arguments by hand, and py_new builds the payload again. The
error messages are unchanged and are now covered in vm_argument_errors.py.

Both types drop their slot_new overrides and take FuncArgs in py_new.
Behavior is unchanged.

A PyRef<T> argument that fails its isinstance check while binding
arguments now raises "{name}() {displayname} must be {expected}, not
{found}", with the expected name taken from T's tp_name. The display
name is "argument 'name'" for a keyword-capable parameter, "argument"
for a function taking exactly one positional argument, and
"argument N" otherwise. Option<T> reports "X or None".
TryFromObject gains try_from_argument, overridden by PyRef<T> and
Option<T>; other conversions keep their errors. The derive converts
fields through it, so the pyarg `expected` attribute is removed.
A callee without a name, or a failing instance argument, keeps the
previous downcast message.

Extract the shared conversion call to remove the duplicated branch.
The PositionalOnly arm and the PositionalOrKeyword | KeywordOnly arm emit the same try_from_argument call. They differ only in the trailing .map_err(...). Build the differing suffix first, then emit the call once.
The test in integer_alias_tests.rs (Line 28) matches the token string try_from_argument(vm, x)). It would then see a trailing empty suffix and still match for any arguments. Re-run that test after the change.
As per coding guidelines: "When branches differ only in a value but share common logic, extract the differing value first, then call the common logic once."
