Adds byte input support to pyexpat and improves parsing coverage. Related to #8083. The implementation was assisted by Codex (GPT-6.1); Codex (GPT-6) updated this description.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
XML parsing now reports full DOCTYPE information and dispatches callbacks for internal DTD declarations, including elements, attributes, notations, and entities.
External entity references can be routed to the appropriate handlers, while undefined entities raise an error when no skipped-entity handler is available.
XML declaration callbacks run only when the input includes an XML declaration.
Bug Fixes
Documents with quoted external identifiers containing brackets are parsed correctly.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The pyexpat implementation now parses internal DTD declarations, filters undeclared parameter-entity references while preserving byte positions, and tracks document entity references. Both parser backends dispatch declaration and entity callbacks. XML declaration callbacks run only when the input contains an XML declaration.

Summary
Parse and dispatch DTD declarations crates/stdlib/src/pyexpat.rs
The parser retains DOCTYPE syntax, extracts internal DTD declarations, and invokes declaration handlers. It records external entity identifiers and decodes numeric character references in entity values.
Filter DOCTYPE input in both backends crates/stdlib/src/pyexpat.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_pyexpat.py
DoctypeFilterReader filters undeclared parameter-entity references while preserving byte positions, detects XML declarations, and collects document entity references. Both parser backends use the reader and prepare DOCTYPE events. A test covers brackets in a quoted external identifier.
Dispatch entity and XML declaration callbacks crates/stdlib/src/pyexpat.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_pyexpat.py
Character data markers trigger external-entity or skipped-entity handlers, or an undefined-entity error. XML declaration callbacks run only when the input contains an XML declaration. A test checks the error for an undeclared entity when a skipped-entity handler is installed.

DTD parsing can report incorrect declarations and resolve entities incorrectly, while chunked input can change callback behavior. These compatibility defects should be corrected before merging.

Explanation
The title "Enable pyexpat bytes test" names the main purpose of the change set in the PR objectives: adding byte-input support to pyexpat and enabling the bytes test. The raw summary describes DTD parsing, entity handling, and a new prefix reader in crates/stdlib/src/pyexpat.rs, plus added tests in extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_pyexpat.py. The title does not describe the DTD and entity work, so it covers only part of the change. It is still a real aspect of the PR, and the title is short and clear. The title is partially related to the changeset: it refers to a real part of the change but not to the bulk of the work.

entity_references scans only bytes still in self.content, which contains at most the tail of the prefix read ahead and is drained as parsing proceeds. References arriving in later chunks cannot be supplied to dtd_entity_replacements at the Doctype event.
The reference may raise an xml-rs undefined-entity error instead of reaching the intended skipped-entity handling.
This can occur when: A DOCTYPE names an external subset, and an undeclared-internal-subset &name; appears beyond the initially buffered bytes or in a later Parse chunk.

- Around line 639-640: Update the external-entity flag calculation using the

pyexpat extra tests and verify it raises an undefined-entity error.
- Around line 644-654: Update dtd_entity_replacements to exclude
parameter-entity declarations when building general-entity replacements, while
preserving the existing replacement conditions for general entities. Verify that
parameter declarations cannot be recorded with the E marker.
- Around line 2042-2052: Update the content-model construction in
ElementDeclHandler so declarations other than EMPTY and ANY are parsed into the
documented nested (type, quantifier, name, children) tuples instead of using
type 0 with empty children. Preserve the existing EMPTY and ANY handling, and
ensure sequence, choice, nested groups, element names, and quantifiers are
represented according to the Expat content-model format.
- Around line 1383-1386: Update initialize’s XML-declaration detection to
recognize declarations after a UTF-16 BOM, so dispatch invokes XmlDeclHandler
for BOM-marked UTF-16 input. Add a UTF-16 test that verifies XmlDeclHandler
receives the declaration.
- Line 1917: Update the entity-replacement handling in dispatch_character_data
so document text containing U+FDD0 and marker-like sequences is always preserved
as ordinary text and cannot trigger entity dispatch or be dropped; distinguish
replacement provenance using a marker the parser cannot emit from document text
or track it outside the character stream.
- Around line 1332-1340: Update the undeclared parameter-entity blanking
condition in the doctype filter to preserve the reference when parameter-entity
parsing is ALWAYS and the document is standalone, allowing Expat to reject it.
Reuse the existing parsing-mode and standalone-state values; keep the current
blanking behavior for other combinations.
- Around line 1357-1376: Update the prefix handling around `Self::first_markup`
so complete XML declarations and processing instructions preceding an unfinished
DOCTYPE are released to the parser before waiting for more input. Preserve
XML-declaration detection after releasing those bytes, and keep
`filter_undefined_parameter_references` limited to the DOCTYPE content.
Review comments at @extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_pyexpat.py:
- Around line 60-63: Update the undeclared-entity test around parser.Parse to
capture the ExpatError and assert that its code is XML_ERROR_UNDEFINED_ENTITY,
so unrelated parse errors fail the test.

Report undeclared parameter entities as skipped
When parameter-entity parsing is ALWAYS (or UNLESS_STANDALONE for a non-standalone document), an undeclared %missing; is reported by Expat through SkippedEntityHandler('missing', 1). This condition blanks the reference and discards its name before xml-rs sees it, so RustPython silently succeeds without invoking the installed handler; retain enough information to dispatch the skipped parameter entity after filtering.
both ParseTest.test_parse_bytes and ParseTest.test_parse_file pass when run individually. @youknowone, could you please reactivate the CI checks for this PR?
never delete pr template. there is no motivation to do that if you opened pr yourself
@youknowone As far as I know, this is likely true when using the GitHub CLI, but I'm not currently in a position to test that right now. Do you want to have this double-checked?

Resolve parameter declarations in source order
When parameter-entity parsing is enabled and a reference precedes a later declaration, as in <!DOCTYPE r [%x;<!ENTITY % x ''>]><r/>, this pre-scan puts x in declared before any references are examined, so the earlier %x; is not queued for SkippedEntityHandler. Expat treats declarations as effective only from their source position and reports that reference as skipped; track declarations while scanning references in a single source-ordered pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Buffer split UTF-8 BOMs before flushing the prefix
When byte input is fed incrementally with the first Parse() ending after one or two bytes of the UTF-8 BOM, this branch treats that partial signature as safe and drains it from prefix. On the next call parse_xml_declaration() sees only the remaining BOM bytes before <?xml, leaves xml_declaration as None, and the otherwise valid document omits XmlDeclHandler; keep partial UTF-8 BOM signatures buffered just like the UTF-16 signatures.

Decode skipped names with the document encoding
For a non-UTF-8 byte document such as ISO-8859-1 containing an external subset and &é; (byte 0xe9), the final non-ASCII fix still converts the raw name with from_utf8_lossy, registering a replacement for while xml-rs decodes the actual reference as é. The parse therefore raises undefined entity instead of invoking SkippedEntityHandler('é', 0); decode scanned names using the XML declaration's encoding rather than lossy UTF-8.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve namespace bindings in external entity contexts
When namespace processing is enabled and an external general entity is referenced inside an element with in-scope namespace declarations, Expat's context argument encodes those bindings so it can be passed to ExternalEntityParserCreate(). Passing only the entity name here loses that namespace context, so handlers receive unusable metadata for parsing the external fragment; construct the context from the current namespace stack.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Open the DOCTYPE before dispatching skipped entities
With XML_PARAM_ENTITY_PARSING_ALWAYS and <!DOCTYPE r [%missing;]><r/>, Expat calls StartDoctypeDeclHandler, then SkippedEntityHandler('missing', 1), then EndDoctypeDeclHandler. The newly added dispatch loop runs before StartDoctypeDeclHandler, so callback ordering is inverted (and a skipped-entity handler exception prevents the start callback entirely); move these callbacks inside the doctype interval in source order.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Scan entity values for unresolved external-subset references
When an unprocessed external subset exists and an internal entity contains an unresolved reference, for example <!DOCTYPE r SYSTEM 'x' [<!ENTITY e '&missing;'>]><r>&e;</r>, Expat allows the external subset to provide that declaration and reports missing through SkippedEntityHandler when e expands. The references iterator here is populated only from content after the DOCTYPE, so missing is never given a synthetic skipped marker and xml-rs raises undefined entity; include references found in internal entity values (and analogous DTD defaults) when building replacements.
