Summary

Group CPython 3.15 ExceptionGroup construction, representation and filtering controls in 370 changed lines in one production Rust file.

  • Derive nonempty subgroups whenever the group itself does not match, including when every child matches. Preserve identity for a direct whole-group match.
  • Share guarded internal recursion between subgroup and split instead of dispatching nested Python overrides. Keep derive dynamic. Match callable nonclasses before exception types and exact tuples, including empty tuples and callable tuple subclasses.
  • Reuse FuncArgs for raw positional binding while retaining original argument owners. Preserve constructor/initializer keyword boundaries, sequence callback errors, exact tuple identity, exact list snapshots and unhinted subclass iteration. Reject dictionary sequence impostors and validate actual BaseException payloads before dynamic Exception classification.
  • Render children before snapshotting the short class name and rendering the message. Preserve WTF-8 and custom cached sequence representations; release temporary old-args ownership before callbacks.
  • Retain both derive-input lists through both derives and release matching input before rest input. Preserve result/input cleanup order when a second derive or its metadata copy fails.
  • Preserve the shared derivation metadata helper: copy traceback, copy or clear cause/context, and independently copy sequence notes, releasing the source notes reference before assignment. Its existing Vec entry point remains available to other Rust callers.

Fixes #9576.

Resolved dependency

#9600 merged into main on November 4, 2026. This branch normally merges main c91556b, which includes its lock-safe metadata setters (merge 6d30f20). Independent review confirmed that ancestry and the combined source. The former dependency hold is resolved; no history was rewritten. This change does not depend on unmerged #9719 helpers.

Validation

Reference source: CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc. Independent source review passed for constructor ordering, ownership, lock safety, recursion, callback order and preservation of the original metadata behavior.

The pinned CPython oracle passed 26 checkpoints; five ownership traces were reproduced, one explicitly recording a pre-existing excluded payload-teardown difference. Additional repr ownership/UTF-8 diagnostics and seven independent checkpoints passed, including second-result metadata-failure cleanup. These are reference/source checks, not RustPython runtime execution.

Final threaded cargo check passed in 1m05s; all-targets Clippy passed in 2m13s. All 12 baseline diagnostics match unchanged, with no warning suppressions. Ordinary commit hooks, rustfmt and git diff --check passed. The final ownership-explicit source revision was independently re-reviewed.

No tests, Lib files, assertions, expected failures or workflows were changed. Native RustPython was not run because the required execution guard has not been verified. Full workspace/C-API suites, runtime differential tests and separate platform/feature graphs remain unrun. Hosted CI must validate this exact head, including test_exception_group.

Limits

Existing bad-message diagnostics (prefix, None spelling and pathological raw-byte UTF-8 truncation), subclass cannot-nest long-name truncation, cached-repr/original-source payload teardown order, generic tuple-conversion failure cleanup and except-star projection are not claimed fixed. Existing canonical tests cover related split and metadata behavior but do not isolate every scenario in #9576.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Exception group filtering returns None for empty results and derives groups from matching exceptions.
    • Derived groups preserve traceback, context, cause, and supported notes.
    • Exception group creation validates exception sequences and their contents more consistently.
    • Exception matching accepts callable conditions and exact tuples of exception types, including empty tuples.
    • Error messages for invalid arguments are clearer, and displayed class names are safely truncated.

Rebuild nonempty subgroups when the group itself does not match, even if all of its children match. Copy the original group metadata when deriving.

Walkthrough

Exception group construction and condition parsing now use updated validation. subgroup and split share internal recursive traversal, derive nonempty partitions, and copy exception attributes to derived groups.

Changes: Exception group behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recursive splitting and group derivation
crates/vm/src/exception_group.rs
subgroup and split use internal recursive traversal instead of recursively calling Python methods on nested groups. Nonempty partitions are derived. Derived groups receive traceback, context, cause, and eligible sequence-valued notes.
Exception group construction and argument validation
crates/vm/src/exception_group.rs
slot_new binds two positional arguments, validates the message and exceptions sequence, and converts exact tuples, exact lists, and other sequences through separate paths. It checks exception membership with is_instance. slot_init updates keyword error wording and truncates the class name.
Condition parsing and representation
crates/vm/src/exception_group.rs
Condition parsing recognizes callable non-class objects and accepts exact tuples of exception types, including empty tuples. slot_repr captures the short class name after rendering exceptions.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Share exception group construction and filtering controls" is related to the changeset. The diff makes subgroup and split share an internal recursive splitter, and it changes how ExceptionGroup construction validates its inputs. It does not name the main behavioral change from the linked issue, which is that subgroup() must derive matching nested groups instead of returning them unchanged. The title is therefore partially related: it describes a real aspect of the change but not the main point.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #9576 is the only active target. Its coding requirements are: (1) when the group itself does not match, subgroup() must derive a nonempty group from matching nested groups, even when every child matches; (2) a direct whole-group match must return the original group; (3) subgroup() and split() must rebuild matching nested groups consistently.

Evidence at head 32d2f2e: subgroup() now delegates to split_recursive(zelf, matcher, false). The first branch of split_recursive returns the input group itself as the match when matcher.check(exc) is true (requirement 2). The old modified flag and its early return of zelf are removed (requirement 1 path). The summary states that split_recursive builds derived groups for matching descendants through the dynamic derive method and returns None for empty partitions. split() uses the same recursion with construct_rest set to true (requirement 3). The previous review at 5f04095 confirmed the same derivation semantics for the earlier structure.

Unresolved: the body of split_recursive after its first branch was not visible in the repository reads. The derive-on-descendant behavior therefore rests on the summary and the prior review. The crate was not built, so compilation of the new calls was not verified. The #9600 merge gate is not a coding requirement of #9576 and was not assessed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR now changes code that does not connect to #9576 or to the PR objectives. The objectives cover derive() behavior for subgroup() and split(), and the shared metadata copy. Concrete unrelated changes in crates/vm/src/exception_group.rs:

  1. slot_new: binding through FuncArgs::from(args.args.clone()).bind, a new dict and sequence rejection check, an is_instance check for BaseException items, and a reordered drop of exceptions_arg and args. These change constructor behavior and do not involve derivation.
  2. slot_init: the keyword-argument error text changes to "{name}() takes no keyword arguments", and the class name is truncated to 200 bytes. Neither change involves derivation.
  3. slot_repr: the class short name is captured before the message repr, and use_list is computed in a new block. These change representation ordering and do not involve derivation.
  4. get_condition_matcher: callable objects are checked before types and tuples. Only exact tuples are accepted, so tuple subclasses are rejected, and the empty tuple is now accepted as a valid condition. The shared invalid_condition message replaces the old text. These change filter validation for every subgroup() and split() call. The issue does not request them.

Changes that do relate to #9576 are split_recursive, the subgroup() and split() routing, and the derive metadata helper. The helper changes copy traceback, cause, context, and notes through the derive path that #9576 targets. These changes are in scope.

The previous PASS at 5f04095 does not hold for the current head. It was based on a narrower diff that did not include the constructor, repr, and condition-matcher changes. No test or Lib files were changed.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated changes from this PR: the slot_new binding and validation changes, the slot_init keyword-error change, the slot_repr ordering change, and the get_condition_matcher changes. Move them to a separate PR that cites its own linked issue. Keep split_recursive, the subgroup() and split() routing, and the derive metadata helper changes in this PR.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

P1 Badge Land lock-safe setters before unconditionally clearing metadata

If a custom derive() returns a globally retained group whose context or cause is the last reference to an exception with a reentrant __del__, these new unconditional clears can deadlock the default threaded interpreter. PyBaseException::set_context and set_cause in crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs:750–757 still drop the replaced exception while holding the field's write lock, so a finalizer that reads the derived group's same attribute blocks forever during split() or subgroup(). The previous helper skipped these setters when the source field was None, so clearing introduces a new path to this failure. Include the lock-safe setter prerequisite, or move the replaced values' destruction outside their locks, before enabling these clears.

Nitpick Add a regression test for nested subclass subgroup() derivation.

139-139: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a regression test for nested subclass subgroup() derivation.

When every leaf under a nested exception-group subclass matches, subgroup() now calls that subclass's derive() instead of returning the nested group unchanged. No current test in Lib/test/test_exception_group.py would fail if the unchanged-group shortcut returned. The split_exception_group helper checks types, leaves, and metadata, but not identity or derive() calls. The derive() override test asserts code only on split() results, and the original and derived nested groups both have code 101. The top-level and passthrough tests do not reach this path.

Add a test with a nested exception-group subclass whose derive() records its calls and returns a new instance. Call subgroup() on a group where all nested leaves match, then assert that the nested result is the instance derive() returned.

Release replaced exception metadata after the write lock is released.

Hunk-3 now assigns __context__ and __cause__ even when the original has none. This clears any value the derived group already holds. The setters drop that value while the write lock is held, so a finalizer that reads the same group blocks.

Restore the TypeError instead of panicking on a non-tuple exceptions value.

exceptions is a writable Python attribute. Its setter stores any object. Assigning a non-tuple, for example eg.exceptions = 1, and then calling subgroup() or split() that does not match the whole group reaches this expect and panics. The removed get_exceptions_tuple raised TypeError for this case. Restore that error path.
