Summary

Reuse the existing fallible assignment_value path for ctypes scalar initialization, .value assignment and generic from_param conversion. Remove the duplicate validator and byte writer that repeated Python callbacks and could turn conversion failures into zero.

  • Keep __new__ allocation-only with zeroed storage; __init__ converts the optional positional value once and ignores keywords, as CPython does.
  • Reuse ArgIntoFloat for float conversion, including float-subclass handling and __index__ fallback.
  • Preserve conversion exceptions while supporting _as_parameter_ fallback through existing optional-attribute and recursion machinery.
  • Build native-endian CArgObject values directly instead of allocating a temporary scalar wrapper.
  • Retain pointer-specific conversion, hidden owners and py_object provenance. Omitted py_object remains NULL; explicit None remains distinct.
  • Reuse bounded storage writes so borrowed buffers stay in place and resized scalar tails are preserved.

The contracts were compared with CPython 3.15's ctypes implementation and scalar setters. No new conversion framework, tests, snippets or workflow changes.

Validation

  • Strict threading VM library Clippy and default-feature VM library compilation passed on base c8991a5bcf.
  • Formatting, diff checks and independent source review passed, including the resized-buffer correction.
  • Independent CPython 3.15.0 probes covered once-only protocols, error/fallback behavior, float subclasses, allocation/init separation, characters, swapped storage, None ownership and resized scalars. These are reference observations, not RustPython runtime tests.

Local validation is compile/source-only. RustPython runtime, full-workspace and C-API tests were not run locally. Existing Lib/test/test_ctypes coverage is unchanged. Windows wchar/BSTR behavior remains unverified; this does not implement COM string allocation or a new long-double ABI.

AI assistance: implementation and review used OpenAI Codex; model version was not exposed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved conversion of scalar values passed to C-compatible interfaces, including support for None with pointer types and _as_parameter_ fallbacks when direct conversion fails.
    • Corrected value assignment to update existing storage, including array and pointer elements.
    • Improved handling of Windows wide strings, including strings containing embedded NUL characters and null pointers.
    • Fixed Windows callback handling for wide strings and BSTR values.
    • Simple-value initialization now ignores keyword arguments; value assignment converts values before updating existing storage.

Route initialization, value writes and generic from_param through existing scalar assignment. Keep allocation separate from conversion, preserve fallback exceptions and ownership, and reuse bounded writes for resized storage.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Scalar ctypes conversion and assignment now use assignment_value and existing storage. Windows support adds BSTR allocation, decoding, ownership handling, and X type-code support across value, array, and callback paths.

Changes: Scalar ctypes conversion and BSTR support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scalar conversion and instance storage
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/simple.rs
from_param converts scalar values through assignment_value and can fall back to _as_parameter_. Construction allocates zeroed storage from StgInfo; initialization accepts keyword arguments, and value assignment writes converted bytes into existing storage.
Windows BSTR ownership and decoding
crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/simple.rs
BStr manages allocation and ownership. Windows X values decode as wide strings and use BSTR-backed storage during assignment and writes.
BSTR callback and FFI handling
crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs
Callback arguments and results support X pointer values. Windows wide-string callback values convert to Python strings.
Array, pointer, and field writes
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/array.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/pointer.rs
Array elements and fields use destination-aware writes. Pointer element writes snapshot the destination bytes before copying the prepared value.

P2 Badge Add FFI lowering for newly accepted scalar type codes

For VARIANT_BOOL ('v') and Windows BSTR ('X'), this default arm now accepts ordinary Python values and returns typed C arguments, but ffi_value_from_type_code in crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs has no arm for either code and falls through to FfiValue::Pointer(0). Consequently, a foreign function with VARIANT_BOOL in argtypes receives false for True, and a nonzero BSTR address is passed as NULL; these raw inputs previously raised TypeError. Add the corresponding FFI lowering or exclude these codes from the generic path so successful conversion cannot silently discard the value.

Reverse only the scalar-width prefix in the swapped getter.

The setter now keeps a resized tail, but value still reverses the whole buffer. The first bytes that decode_type_code reads then come from the zero tail, so a grown swapped scalar reads back 0.

Allocate Windows BSTR values with SysAllocStringLen and decode their explicit length, preserving embedded NULs and UTF-16 surrogates. Guard unpublished allocations and free previous values only when committing scalar, field, array or pointer assignments. Preserve raw-copy and COM ownership-transfer semantics instead of attaching destructor ownership.

Route BSTR foreign-call values and callbacks as pointers, preserve callback subclass pointer identity, and report callback conversion errors. Add host regression coverage for pointer lowering and Windows allocation/replacement.

P1 Badge Initialize failed BSTR callback results to NULL

On Windows, when a BSTR callback returns an unsupported value (or BSTR allocation fails), this arm reports the exception but never writes to result; thunk_callback then returns the same undefined libffi result slot to native code. The caller can therefore receive a garbage BSTR pointer and crash when it reads or frees it, so this error path should explicitly store a NULL pointer.

Write a NULL result when BSTR callback conversion fails.

When the X result conversion fails, this branch reports the exception but leaves the libffi result slot unwritten. libffi requires the callback to fill ret, so the native caller can read an indeterminate pointer as a BSTR. Write a null pointer in the Err branch.

Cover the str path for X (BSTR) fields in the Windows snippet.

The Windows Rust test calls BStr::new and replace directly. It never reaches assignment_value("X", ...), and the Windows snippet assigns only None. A change that breaks str conversion for X fields would not fail either test. Add a str assignment and a read-back check to the existing win32 block:

Free committed BSTRs when no ctypes value owns them.

Committed BSTRs are freed only when a later assignment replaces them. Discarded temporary X scalars and X.from_param(str) arguments never free their BSTR, because no owner remains. Track the allocation on the owning value and free it on drop, unless ownership moves to a foreign call.

Track BSTR ownership before freeing a replaced slot value.

BStr::replace frees the previous slot value without checking ownership. Slots filled by from_buffer_copy or from_address can hold pointers owned by another object or by foreign memory. Assigning a string to such a slot calls SysFreeString on that pointer. This causes use-after-free, double free, or a crash.

Review comment at @crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs around lines 643 - 646:
Update BStr::replace to check that the previous pointer is owned by this BStr
before freeing it with SysFreeString. Preserve replacement behavior for owned
values, and leave borrowed or foreign pointers untouched; use the existing
ownership-tracking mechanism rather than assuming every slot value is owned.
