Support custom converter types and instances in ctypes argtypes - #9685
In CPython's ctypes, any object or type with a from_param method can be passed in argtypes.
Previously, RustPython required every item in argtypes to be a known ctypes type upfront before calling from_param. Furthermore, when checking whether an argument should be passed as an aggregate by value, it checked whether the converter type itself was a subclass of Structure, rather than checking the type of the converted object.
This broke calls that use custom converters (such as rich._win32_console._FillConsoleOutputCharacterW, where WindowsCoordinates is a NamedTuple with a from_param classmethod returning a COORD structure).
Changes
In extract_arg_types_and_converters, allow arbitrary types/instances as long as they have a from_param method, raising TypeError: item %d in _argtypes_ has no from_param method on AttributeError. Propagate non-AttributeError exceptions directly.
In set_argtypes, resolve and cache the validated from_param callables in converters, matching CPython and avoiding repeated descriptor lookups at call time.
In extract_call_info, use the cached converters when available to avoid redundant lookups during calls.
In convert_object, invoke the cached from_param converter directly without rejecting custom converter types or instances upfront.
When dispatching structures and unions by value, check the converted object's type (converted.class()) rather than the converter type.
Keep converted objects alive across foreign function calls in the conv_param fallback.
Wrap conversion errors in ArgumentError: argument %d: ... with the original exception chained via __cause__.
In PyCThunk::new, reject non-ctypes classes in callback argtypes.
Validation
cargo test -p rustpython-vm --lib stdlib::_ctypes::function (passed)
cargo run -p rustpython -- extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py (passed)
cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -p rustpython-vm (passed)
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
ctypes function arguments support custom converters provided by classes or instances with a from_param method.
Converted values support pointer and by-value structure or union arguments, with references retained for the duration of the call.
Function prototypes capture converters when created or when argument types are assigned; later changes to the original argument-type list do not alter that snapshot.
Callback argument types accept pointer subclasses and types with a type code.
Bug Fixes
Invalid argument types are rejected when assigned, and conversion failures are reported as ArgumentError with the argument position when available.
Clearing argtypes also clears its cached converters.
In CPython ctypes, any type or adapter instance implementing from_param is allowed in foreign function argtypes. Previously, RustPython required all argtypes entries to be known ctypes types with a _type_ code or pointer/structure subclasses before from_param was even invoked, and assumed from_param would return an instance matching the argtype class. This caused foreign calls with custom converters (such as rich's WindowsCoordinates NamedTuple returning a COORD structure) to fail with TypeError: Unsupported argument type.
- Validate that all items in argtypes define from_param on assignment.
- Allow arbitrary custom converter types and instances in argtypes.
- Inspect the converted instance's class to support converters returning structures and unions by value or simple types.
- Fall back to conv_param for arbitrary converted Python objects.
- Wrap conversion failures in ctypes.ArgumentError.
FixesRustPython#8341.

ctypes function arguments now use cached from_param converters. The changes update argument validation, FFI conversion, error wrapping, callback argument checks, and tests for converter behavior.

Summary
Argument type validation and caching crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs
Argument type extraction and assignment validate and cache from_param converters. Function-pointer constructors initialize the cache from class-level argtypes. Callback argument types use separate validation.
Argument conversion and call handling crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs
Call paths use cached converters for regular, COM, and paramflags calls. Converted values support pointer, scalar, and aggregate forms, with keepalive references retained. Conversion failures include the argument index and original exception when _ctypes.ArgumentError is available. create_out_buffer accepts a general Python object.
The common converter path is supported, but an uncommon concurrent cache-fill operation can hang, and unsupported OUT converters fail later than expected. Correct the lock order before merging; the remaining concerns are bounded validation and test-coverage gaps.

Explanation
The title "Support custom converter types and instances in ctypes argtypes" matches the main change. The PR caches each argtypes entry's from_param converter, accepts converter classes and instances, and wraps conversion errors in ArgumentError. The summary and test additions in extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py cover the same feature. The title is specific and short, and it names the affected area (ctypes argtypes). It does not mention the linked Windows console issue (#8341), which is acceptable because the title targets the primary change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #8341 requires that the vendored Rich cleanup stop raising TypeError: Unsupported argument type on the Windows console path. The PR closes #8341. The root cause is a ctypes argtypes item that is not a ctypes type (WindowsCoordinates, with a from_param method). The reviewed head addresses this in crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs. In the diff, extract_arg_types_and_converters accepts any item with a from_param attribute. It raises item N in _argtypes_ has no from_param method only on AttributeError. convert_object calls the cached converter directly. It dispatches on converted.class(), so a structure result from from_param passes by value. The removed Err(vm.new_type_error("Unsupported argument type")) paths no longer fire for custom converters. The added Windows-only test in extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py mirrors the reported case. It calls FillConsoleOutputCharacterW with a custom converter that returns a _COORD, and expects a zero return. Limits: the Windows branch runs only on win32. The Windows 11 25H2 scenario was not run. The tail of the function.rs diff (set_argtypes and PyCThunk::new) was truncated in this review. Those parts were not read directly. The set_argtypes validation that the Windows test depends on therefore rests on the AI-generated summary and the PR description.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed code is in the ctypes function-call path. The changed files are crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs and extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py. The function.rs changes cover argtypes validation and converter caching (extract_arg_types_and_converters, set_argtypes, extract_call_info). They cover conversion dispatch (convert_object, convert_arg_for_call), ArgumentError wrapping with __cause__ (wrap_arg_error), and the lifetime of converted objects. Callback argtypes validation in PyCThunk::new also appears in the PR description. The raw summary also lists COM-method and integer-address converter snapshots and a create_out_buffer change. The PR description does not mention these. They concern the same converter snapshot behavior, so no concrete unrelated connection exists. The test additions cover the same behavior. No unrelated module or product area appears in the reviewed diff. The truncated tail of the function.rs diff was not read directly, so this verdict relies on the visible hunks and the summary for that part.

Reject non-ctypes classes in callback argtypes.
The callback guard downcasts each item to PyType, which accepts any class. A class without a ctypes type code, such as one that defines only from_param, is accepted. Its FFI argument then falls back to a pointer, and the callback can receive None for that argument. Check for ctypes metadata before accepting the item, so the new error text matches the behavior.

Assert that each converter runs during the srand calls.
The new srand calls do not check that from_param ran. Both converters return int(val). If the call path skipped from_param, the argument would still be 10 or 20, and the test would still pass. Record each converter call and assert it after the matching srand call.

Add a converter-returned aggregate case to the Rust unit test.
The Windows assertion checks only ret == 0 for an invalid handle. That result does not depend on the _COORD argument, so the assertion passes whether the converted value is passed by value or as a pointer. No other test in this change checks that a converter returning a Structure or Union takes the aggregate branch in function.rs.
Add a case to custom_converter_argtypes_and_from_param where a custom converter returns a Structure instance. Assert that convert_object returns the aggregate variant instead of a pointer. This test runs on every platform and does not call console APIs. Keep the Windows block unchanged, because it guards the Unsupported argument type regression.

Cache the validated argtype converter
When an adapter exposes from_param through a descriptor or changes it after argtypes assignment, this lookup is discarded: set_argtypes stores only the adapter sequence, and each call resolves from_param again in both extract_call_info and convert_object. CPython retains the converter resolved at assignment, so a stateful descriptor can be consumed during validation or a later method replacement can change or break conversion; retain the validated converter instead.
Add a negative test for callback argtypes that are not ctypes types.
PyCThunk::new rejects a plain class with only from_param when it is used as a callback argtype. The check is at crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs:2204. No inspected test covers this rejection, so a change that removed or weakened the check would not fail the suite.

Snapshot argtypes with the cached converters
If argtypes is assigned a mutable list and an element is later replaced, this discards the validated type vector but stores the list beside the cached converter tuple. extract_call_info then re-reads the new list item and pairs it with the old converter; for example, replacing [Adapter] with [c_void_p] while the cached adapter returns a Python int makes convert_object send that result through convert_to_pointer, changing the FFI argument ABI. Keep an internal type snapshot aligned with converters while preserving the public list if needed.

Cache class-declared converters like instance converters.
For a function built from a DLL name or address, extract_call_info reads the class _argtypes_ on every call and never stores the result in converters. The instance argtypes branch stores a snapshot. If a from_param is replaced after construction, class-declared calls use the new converter and assigned-argtypes calls keep the old one. This asymmetry predates this PR. It is not required for the current changes, so this comment should not block the PR.
Possible approach
Store the class-level snapshot in zelf.converters as the instance branch does. Decide first how class _argtypes_ changes and instance argtypes = None should invalidate that cache. Add a test that replaces from_param after construction for both a class-declared and an assigned function.

Handle non-callable converter instances in pure-OUT paramflags.
For a pure OUT parameter (direction 2), build_callargs_with_paramflags passes the argtypes entry to create_out_buffer, which calls it with no arguments. A converter instance without __call__ raises TypeError during argument building. The assignment accepts that instance because it only checks for from_param.
Possible approach
Reject non-callable argtypes entries for pure OUT parameters when paramflags is set, or build the OUT buffer without calling the entry. The correct choice depends on the intended OUT buffer contract for custom converters, which the inspected code does not define.

Cache converters from class-level _argtypes_
When a CFUNCTYPE prototype stores a custom converter in class-level _argtypes_ and is instantiated from a native address, its instance argtypes and converters remain empty, so this branch resolves from_param again on every call instead of retaining the converter. CPython keeps the converter resolved when the prototype type is created; replacing or removing from_param before the first call therefore still uses the original converter there, while this code uses the replacement or fails. The fresh evidence is that this class-level path bypasses the new instance converter cache.

Acquire class-cache locks in setter order
When a function-pointer view created through PyCFuncPtr::from_cdata has class-level _argtypes_, a call can enter this branch while another thread assigns argtypes. This branch takes converters.write() before argtypes.read(), but set_argtypes takes argtypes.write() before waiting for converters.write(); on a threaded build, the threads can each hold the lock the other needs and deadlock. Use a consistent lock order or avoid nesting the recheck.
Add a test that fails if the converter is captured at prototype creation or skipped.
The existing test installs no different converter before instantiation. A cache built at CFUNCTYPE time would still hold the working int converter, so the test passes. A call path that skips the cached converter also passes, because 60 passes through unchanged.
Keep the existing lines unchanged. Add a block after proto_func(60). The block installs a raising converter after prototype creation and before instantiation. Then it sets from_param to None. The call must raise ArgumentError with a RuntimeError cause.
Additive test block
ProtoConverter.from_param = None
proto_func(60)
++class InstantiationTimeConverter:+ @classmethod+ def from_param(cls, val):+ return int(val)+++InstantiationTimeProto = ctypes.CFUNCTYPE(None, InstantiationTimeConverter)+++def raising_from_param(cls, val):+ raise RuntimeError("instantiation-time converter")+++InstantiationTimeConverter.from_param = classmethod(raising_from_param)+instantiation_func = InstantiationTimeProto(ctypes.cast(libc.srand, ctypes.c_void_p).value)+InstantiationTimeConverter.from_param = None+raised = None+try:+ instantiation_func(60)+except ctypes.ArgumentError as exc:+ raised = exc+assert raised is not None, "call did not use the converter installed before instantiation"+assert isinstance(raised.__cause__, RuntimeError), "ArgumentError cause is not the converter's RuntimeError"
If the cache is built at prototype creation, the call succeeds and the first assertion fails. If the cache is built at instantiation, the raising converter runs and the cause assertion passes. If the cached converter is skipped, nothing raises and the first assertion fails. The block does not depend on whether CFUNCTYPE queries from_param, because the working converter is in place at prototype creation.

Add a regression test after the existing proto_func(60) call using a separate
converter and CFUNCTYPE prototype: install a converter that raises RuntimeError
after prototype creation but before function instantiation, then clear
from_param before calling. Assert the call raises ctypes.ArgumentError with that
RuntimeError as its cause, so the test detects converters captured too early or
skipped.

Resolve class converters when the prototype is created
When Proto = CFUNCTYPE(None, Conv) is created and Conv.from_param is replaced before Proto(address) is constructed, this lookup caches the replacement, so calls use it or fail; CPython retains the converter resolved when the prototype type was created. The no-argument slot_new/PyCFuncPtr::from_cdata path used by ctypes.cast also skips this cache and resolves on the first call. Fresh evidence: the added test mutates ProtoConverter.from_param only after constructing proto_func, so it misses both lifecycle gaps.

Summary
In CPython's
ctypes, any object or type with afrom_parammethod can be passed inargtypes.Previously, RustPython required every item in
argtypesto be a known ctypes type upfront before callingfrom_param. Furthermore, when checking whether an argument should be passed as an aggregate by value, it checked whether the converter type itself was a subclass ofStructure, rather than checking the type of the converted object. This broke calls that use custom converters (such as
rich._win32_console._FillConsoleOutputCharacterW, whereWindowsCoordinatesis aNamedTuplewith afrom_paramclassmethod returning aCOORDstructure).Changes
