Implements PyObject_CheckBuffer from #8156.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a C API check to determine whether an object supports the buffer protocol. It returns a positive result for supported objects, such as bytes and bytearrays, and a negative result for unsupported objects, such as lists and None.

Walkthrough

The C API adds PyObject_CheckBuffer. It returns 1 when an object supports the buffer protocol and 0 otherwise. Tests cover bytes, bytearray, list, None, and a released memoryview.

298-300: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Cover a buffer request that fails in object_check_buffer.

The test checks buffer-exporting objects that acquire successfully (bytes, bytearray) and objects without a buffer slot (list, None). PyObject_CheckBuffer reads only the slot, so an implementation that tries to acquire a buffer and returns 0 on failure would still pass. The doc comment on check_buffer states this distinction as the reason the function exists.

Add a case where the slot is present and acquisition fails. A released memoryview over the bytes object is a practical fixture. Call release() on it, then assert that PyObject_CheckBuffer returns 1. Acquisition on a released view raises ValueError through try_usable, so the case exercises the gap.

This is a coverage gap. The current implementation returns the correct result.

Review comment at @crates/capi/src/pybuffer.rs around lines 298 - 300:
Extend the PyObject_CheckBuffer test with a memoryview backed by the existing
bytes object, release the view, and assert that PyObject_CheckBuffer still
returns 1. This covers an object whose buffer slot is present even though
acquiring its buffer fails.

385-394: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Add a zero-dimension call with null pointers to the test.

The test covers only ndim = -1 with null pointers. The current guard ndim <= 0 returns before any pointer use, so that call passes. If the guard changes to ndim < 0, a ndim = 0 call would pass null pointers to core::slice::from_raw_parts. That function requires non-null pointers even for zero-length slices. The test profile keeps debug assertions enabled, so the standard library's precondition check can reject the null pointers. The c-api test step on non-Windows runners can then fail.

Review comment at @crates/capi/src/pybuffer.rs around lines 385 - 394:
Add a test case alongside the existing `PyBuffer_FillContiguousStrides` call
using `ndim = 0` and null pointers. Preserve the existing negative-dimension
case and other arguments so the test covers both boundary values.
