Snapshot a ctypes function's argtypes before invoking its sequence methods, allowing those methods to reassign function.argtypes without trying to acquire the same lock recursively.
Release the setter's write lock before dropping the replaced object, so its finalizer can also re-enter the setter.
When no instance override exists, report the class argument types used by the call path, or None if there is no class default. An explicitly assigned empty tuple remains distinct.
Scope
This fixes lock reentrancy and the ordinary unset getter, not full argument-converter parity. CPython validates/converts argtypes at assignment, while RustPython currently resolves the stored sequence during a call. CPython also caches the original class argument types, whereas this getter and the current RustPython call path read the live class attribute. Class mutation after type creation can therefore still differ. Deletion/reset and raw-sequence lifetime also remain separate.
Validation
CPython 3.15.0 confirmed reassignment from an argtypes sequence method and the old sequence's finalizer, and the getter's behavior for CDLL functions, prototypes, explicit empty tuples and assignment of None.
Independent source review for each commit and normal commit hooks (including rustfmt) passed.
RustPython was not built or executed locally. No tests were added or changed; hosted CI is expected to run the existing ctypes tests.
The getter receiver was corrected to &Self after Windows CI exposed the nested Py<Self> type error in #9615; the same issue was fixed proactively in #9613. The corrected heads require hosted CI recompilation.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Function argument-type settings now consistently reflect instance overrides or class-level defaults.
Reading argument-type settings returns the configured class default when no instance override is set, rather than an empty result.
Function calls use a stable snapshot of instance argument-type settings, improving consistency if those settings change during a call.
Updating argument-type settings is more reliable when cleanup callbacks run during the update.
Snapshot argtypes before invoking sequence methods and release the setter lock before destroying the old value. Sequence methods and finalizers can replace argtypes reentrantly.

Walkthrough
The argtypes getter now returns an instance override or the class value. Call-time resolution snapshots instance argtypes before invoking Python sequence methods. The setter releases the write lock before dropping the replaced value.

The getter falls back to the class _argtypes_ value when no instance override exists. Call-time resolution uses a cloned instance value before invoking Python sequence methods. The setter drops the replaced value after releasing the write lock.

Avoid locking across ctypes argtypes callbacks
Fix ctypes argtypes handling

Release the getter's read guard before looking up class defaults
With no instance override, an uncached class lookup can execute Python: dict-backed type namespaces compare non-string keys whose hashes collide with _argtypes_, invoking their __eq__ methods. If such a method assigns f.argtypes, the setter attempts to acquire the write lock while the temporary read guard here remains alive throughout or_else, so merely reading f.argtypes deadlocks in the default threaded build. The previous getter did not perform this lookup. Save the cloned option in a separate local before calling or_else, as extract_call_info now does, so the guard is released before any equality callback.
Clone the instance override in a separate statement so class namespace equality callbacks can safely re-enter the argtypes setter.

Add a regression snippet for argtypes reassignment from a sequence method.
extract_arg_types calls length and get_item on the stored argtypes sequence. The snapshot at function.rs:1158-1159 keeps that path free of the argtypes read guard. The existing ctypes snippets assign only lists, tuples, and None, so no current test runs a sequence method that reassigns argtypes. A future change that holds the read guard across extract_arg_types would pass these snippets. Add a snippet that assigns a custom sequence whose __len__ or __getitem__ reassigns argtypes, then calls the function. This test can fail or hang if the read guard is held across the sequence call.

Add a ctypes regression snippet that uses a custom argtypes sequence whose
__len__ or __getitem__ reassigns argtypes, then calls the function. Verify the
call completes without hanging, preserving the snapshot-before-extract_arg_types
behavior so Python sequence methods run without the argtypes read guard held.
Add argtypes getter coverage for the class default and the None case.
Add argtypes getter coverage for the class default and the None case.
The getter returns the instance override, then the class _argtypes_ value, then None. No snippet under extra_tests/snippets reads argtypes from a ctypes function. Every match is an assignment. A regression to the old empty-tuple getter would not fail these snippets.
Add a snippet that checks the following:
func.argtypes on an unmodified instance of a class that defines _argtypes_ returns that class value.
func.argtypes on a function with no class default returns None.
