Summary

  • Release the ctypes function's restype write lock before dropping the replaced value. A callable's finalizer may reassign the property, so dropping it under the lock can deadlock. The replacement is published before the old reference is released.
  • Preserve an explicitly assigned None separately from an unset instance value. This selects a void return instead of falling back to the class default.
  • When no instance override exists, return the class default in the getter, consistent with the existing call path.

Scope

CPython caches the original class restype, whereas the existing RustPython call path and this getter read the live class attribute. Class mutation after type creation can therefore still differ. Deletion/reset support and general _check_retval_ dispatch remain separate; internal helper and COM paths are not comprehensively aligned.

Validation

  • CPython 3.15.0 confirmed a replaced restype callable's finalizer can reassign restype, explicit None returns None until a concrete restype is restored, and the getter exposes a declared class default.
  • Independent source review for each commit and normal commit hooks (including rustfmt) passed.
  • RustPython was not built or executed locally. No tests were added or changed; hosted CI is expected to run the existing ctypes tests.

The getter receiver was corrected to &Self after Windows CI exposed the nested Py<Self> type error in #9615; the same issue was fixed proactively in #9613. The corrected heads require hosted CI recompilation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected how restype is resolved for ctypes function pointers: when no instance-level value is set, it now uses the function-pointer class’s declared default.
    • Explicitly setting restype to None now remains an instance-level override rather than being treated as unset.

Release the restype setter lock before destroying the replaced value, whose finalizer may reassign the same property.

Walkthrough

The PyCFuncPtr.restype getter now uses the class _restype_ when no instance override is set. The setter stores explicit None as an override and retains validation for accepted values.

Changes: restype behavior

The getter falls back to the class _restype_ when the instance has no override. The setter stores None explicitly and continues to accept types, callables, or None. It rejects other values.

Explanation

The title "Fix ctypes restype assignment" names the area the change touches. The raw summary and objectives describe a setter that now stores an explicit None as an override, a getter that falls back to the class restype, and a lock-release change so a finalizer can reassign restype. The title does not name the explicit-None or class-default fallback behavior, so it is only partially descriptive. It is still specific enough that a reviewer scanning history can tell the primary change concerns restype assignment in ctypes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Distinguish an explicitly void restype from an unset instance value so calls do not fall back to the class default.

Add a test where a restype finalizer reassigns restype.

The setter drops the replaced value after the write lock is released. No existing ctypes snippet assigns restype from inside a finalizer, so a regression that drops the value while holding the lock would not be caught. Add a snippet whose __del__ reassigns the same function's restype, then assert the final value.

Add a test that reads restype both unset and set to None.

The getter now falls back to the class _restype_, and an explicit None must return None. No existing ctypes snippet reads restype on a class with _restype_, and none assigns None. A regression in getter precedence would pass the current tests. Add a snippet that checks both states on one class.
