Summary

Return an errcheck callback's replacement result directly, including when ctypes has OUT parameters. Returning the exact argument tuple still requests normal OUT-parameter processing. Previously the replacement was overwritten by OUT values.

Scope

This corrects the replacement-result decision only. Existing differences in the callback's argument tuple and snapshot timing remain separate.

Validation

  • Compared the identity-based decision with CPython 3.15.0 _ctypes.CFuncPtr call handling. A CPython 3.15 libc time OUT-parameter check returned a sentinel from errcheck, and returned the OUT integer when errcheck returned its argument tuple.
  • Independent source review and normal commit hooks (including rustfmt) passed. Sequential local three-way file merges with Avoid locking across ctypes errcheck callbacks #9611, Fix ctypes argtypes handling #9613 and Fix ctypes restype assignment #9615 were clean.
  • RustPython was not built or executed locally. No tests were added or changed; hosted CI is expected to run the existing ctypes tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Results returned by an error-checking callback are now preserved instead of being replaced by processed output buffers.

Return a replacement errcheck result directly instead of overwriting it with OUT parameter values. Returning the original argument tuple still requests normal OUT processing.

Walkthrough

build_result now returns a replacement value from errcheck immediately. It does not continue to process OUT buffers in that case.

The change correctly preserves errcheck replacement results when OUT parameters exist. It is mergeable after normal checks; a focused regression test would improve confidence.

Add a regression test for an errcheck replacement when OUT parameters are present.

The existing errcheck tests call a function with no paramflags, so no OUT buffers exist on that path. No test in the inspected test sources sets paramflags with an OUT parameter and an errcheck replacement. A change that restores OUT extraction before the errcheck check would leave these tests passing.

Add a test that defines a function with a pure OUT parameter (PARAMFLAG_FOUT) and an errcheck that returns a replacement value. Assert that the call returns the replacement. The existing errcheck assertions run only on non-posix hosts, so place the new test where the target CI hosts run it.

The early return in build_result is correct. This is a regression-test gap, not a runtime defect.
